Why a Dog’s Teeth May Chatter

January 6, 2023 10:47:50

Similar to humans, animals such as dogs have unique behaviors they exhibit from time to time. While most quirks are adorable, teeth chattering may be caused by severe underlying issues. To help you understand why your dog’s teeth are chattering, below we look at reasons why that may happen.

Your dog is cold

Your dog’s teeth may chatter when it is in a cold environment. This shows that the animal is not comfortable with the current temperature, so if it is outside, you should bring your pet inside.

Alternatively, if an animal’s teeth are chattering while inside the house, then the house may be chilly. Consider covering your dog with a blanket or a pet sweater if one is available. If you want, you could even purchase a heated bed to ensure your furry friend is extra comfortable at home.

Your dog is in pain

Trembling is one telltale sign of pain in dogs and may, in some cases, cause their teeth to chatter. Causes may include abdominal pain, dental pain, sudden injuries, back pain and other conditions that could cause serious discomfort.

Other symptoms of pain in canines include hiding, a decrease in appetite, lethargy, behavioral changes and sensitivity of certain parts of their bodies, among others.  If you observe teeth chattering accompanied by other symptoms of pain, you are advised to visit your veterinarian as soon as you can.

Your dog is experiencing stress

Social anxiety is common in animals, and in some cases, your dog may find it hard to interact with other dogs. During such interactions, their teeth may chatter, which is a completely normal stress response.

In such instances, you should pull your dog away to prevent it from becoming stressed or too overwhelmed. Refraining from doing so increases the chances of your dog snapping or biting other dogs or even people.

Your dog is excited

Your dog’s teeth may be chattering of excitement. You may notice this when your furry friend meets new people or when you come home after an extended period away. If this is the case, then this is completely normal — and also totally cute.

Your dog is experiencing neurological symptoms

Conditions such as shaker syndrome or epilepsy may cause abnormal trembling in dogs, with teeth chattering occurring due to some seizures.

Your pet may also experience disorientation, confusion, full-body trembling, drooling and seizures because of such conditions. If you believe this to be the case, you should consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Your dog is nervous or scared

Just like people, dogs may experience trembles caused by nervousness. Most dogs may even experience teeth chattering and full-body shakes when they are nervous or scared. This is a normal stress response, so there’s nothing to be worried about.

For dogs whose seizures are due to less benign causes, entities such as India Globalization Capital Inc. (NYSE American: IGC) are developing next-gen therapeutics from cannabis compounds so that people’s furry companions enjoy symptomatic relief without triggering serious side effects.
