Research Links Diets High in Fat to Chronic Pain

Diets are important to individuals’ health, with what a person consumes influencing their body by either strengthening their immune system or increasing their risk of developing lifestyle diseases. New research has found that diets high in fat may increase an individual’s sensitivity to nonpainful stimuli, causing chronic pain.

It is normally recommended for individuals to consume fat in order to ensure that their bodies function optimally. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025, recommend that less than 10% of calorie intake should come from saturated fats.

Previous studies have determined that diets high in fat could raise pain sensitivity. For their study, the researchers were mainly focused on determining whether these diets could trigger pain responses in cases where no obesity or diabetes was involved.

They used mice models for their study, which involved feeding the mice different diets. Over a period of eight weeks, some mice were fed a diet high in fat while others were given the standard chow diet.

The researchers observed that during this period, the mice that fed on a lot of fat didn’t develop hyperglycemia or obesity. However, these mice did have more elevated mechanical allodynia responses, which entails experiencing pain due to stimuli that isn’t painful.

Michael Burton, the study author, stated that the research had shown that pain could be triggered in the absence of diabetes, obesity or even injury.

Burton, who is a cellular & molecular neuroscience assistant professor at the University of Texas (Dallas), then noted that one could eat a diet high in fat but only for a limited duration of time.

The primary limitation of the research was its use of mice models, which limited the amount of data that could be applied to people. As investigators learn more about the possibly harmful effects of eating patterns involving foods that are high in fat, individuals who follow these diets are advised to exercise caution.
