Seven Nutrients Tied to Reducing Hair Loss, Boosting Hair Growth

May 4, 2023 12:34:10

Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors, including stress and changes in one’s hormones, nutrition and lifestyle, among others. Experts believe that consuming a balanced diet rich in certain nutrients will boost hair health. Below, we look at some of these nutrients.

Vitamin A

Various studies have showed that vitamin A is necessary for hair growth. However, consuming too much of this vitamin can cause hair loss. To avoid this, you are advised to consume meals rich in the vitamin rather than using supplements.

Biotin

Thinning hair often indicates weak hair, which increases chances of hair loss. Biotin, which is also referred to as the B vitamin, can help with this. Foods that contain the most biotin include eggs, seeds, fish, nuts and some vegetables such as sweet potatoes.

Omega-3

While there are numerous studies on the relationship between hair loss and omega-3 fatty acids, one study did find that consuming supplements with omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients reduced hair loss and improved hair density. Omega-3 fatty acid foods include fish and especially cold-water fatty fish, including mackerel, salmon, tuna, sardines and herring.

Iron

Iron is crucial for making red blood cells, which deliver oxygen in the body to promote growth and support repair and metabolism. This also makes it important for the development of healthy hair. Iron deficiency has also been linked to hair loss. Good sources of iron include spinach, red meat, beans, nuts and dried fruit such as apricots.

Vitamin C

This vitamin is said to encourage the growth of hair by synthesizing and maintaining collagen, which in turn strengthens hair strands. Vitamin C is also a strong antioxidant, which protects hair strands from oxidative damage. Oxidative stress has been linked to hair greying and thinning. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits such as kiwifruit and oranges, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, as well as strawberries and bell peppers.

Vitamin D

Deficiency in vitamin D is known to cause alopecia, which is often referred to as female pattern hair loss in females. Research has shown that this vitamin’s receptors assist in the development of new hair follicles and, in turn, encourage growth of new hair strands. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish flesh and fish liver oils.

Vitamin E

This vitamin is known to promote hair strength and growth. The best sources of vitamin E include avocados, sunflower seeds, pumpkin and almonds.

One should keep in mind though that consuming a balanced diet rich in all nutrients will boost the overall health of hair. If you notice that you are suffering hair loss, talk to your doctor. Many companies, including Jupiter Wellness Inc. (JUPW), are coming up with helpful products that could slow or even reverse hair loss for some people who don’t have an underlying condition triggering the hair loss.
