Study Finds Link Between Quality Sleep and Recovery from Traumatic Brain Injuries

New research conducted that focuses on military veterans has found that good sleep plays an important role in helping heal traumatic brain injuries. The study utilized a novel technique that was developed at the Oregon Health and Science University. Researchers assessed the expansion of perivascular spaces around the brain’s blood vessels using MRIs, reporting that these spaces enlarge as an individual continues ageing and are usually linked to the onset of dementia. The researchers found that of the veterans who participated in the research, those who didn’t sleep well had more post-concussive symptoms and indications of enlarged spaces.

Juan Piantino, an assistant professor of pediatrics with a focus on neurology from the OHSU School of Medicine, was the lead author of the study; he stated that this research has huge consequences for civilians as well as the armed forces, explaining that the research suggests that sleep played a critical role in clearing waste in an individual’s brain following a traumatic brain injury, adding that if an individual failed to sleep well, their brain would not be cleared as effectively.

Piantino, who is an OHSU Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute physician scientist, examined how poor sleep affects recovery following a traumatic brain injury.

The research examined MRIs using a method that was developed by Erin Boespflug and Daniel Schwartz, who is a co-author of the study. This research was conducted under the direction of OHSU School of Medicine professor of neurology Lisa Silbert. The method measures changes in the perivascular spaces in the brain, which make up the glymphatic system, or the waste clearing system of the brain.

Piantino noted that the researchers were able to accurately measure the structure, in addition to  the channel diameter and their location as well as count their numbers.

University of Washington professor of neurology, psychiatry and behavioral sciences Jeffrey Iliff, a study co-author has conducted research on the glymphatic system and the role it plays in various neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. The study utilized data that had been gathered between 2011–2019 from 56 veterans who were enrolled by study co-authors Murray Raskind and Elaine Peskind at the VA Puget Sound.

Piantino noted that the method could be useful for older individuals, adding that in the long term, the method could be modified for use in predicting individuals who had higher chances of developing cognitive problems such as dementia. The study was reported in the “Journal of Neurotrauma.”
