Can CBD Help You Cure Type 2 Diabetes?

The list of conditions that cannabidiol can cure is apparently endless. For the past few years, people have been turning to the hemp extract to manage everything from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain and high blood pressure. There’s even a CBD-based drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat rare and hard to manage pediatric epilepsies.

It seems like Type 2 diabetes just might be on the list too. Kevin Simpson, founder of online CBD retailer OilsBySimpson, suffered from a myriad of medical conditions before he discovered cannabidiol. In 2009, he was suffering from anxiety and depression, and it was so severe he hardly left the house.

“The antidepressants and anxiety medicine I was taking left me feeling like a zombie,” he says, speaking of the side effects caused by pharmaceuticals. “I was tired all the time, barely exercising, and constantly hungry, even after I’d eaten.” This sedentary lifestyle made him gain more and more weight, and he was ultimately diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Running into CBD changed everything for him. At the time, there weren’t any CBD producers in Europe, but he found a certified oil producer (Endoca) and ordered a batch for himself. He was astonished at the results.

“I realized the anxiety was gone when I first went outside. I could hear birds singing, and people smiled at me and I smiled back. CBD oil helped my anxiety and depression more than I could have ever hoped for.”

But that wasn’t all. Simpson took a home blood sugar level test and was shocked to find that more than his anxiety and depression had been fixed. “I did the test after starting CBD oil, and it said I was about 5 MMOL/L. People without diabetes are normally between 4 and 8, but I was usually somewhere between 22 and 25. Even my insulin couldn’t get me down to 5!”

Three weeks later, his doctor took a blood sugar level test himself. “I could barely believe my ears when he told me I didn’t have diabetes anymore. At this point, I was still overweight, so I didn’t understand how it was possible. If you start losing weight and eating well, you can treat diabetes over time, but this happened in just three weeks.”

In 2013, he found Clinical Professor, Consultant Physician and Research Director Filip Krag Knop on LinkedIn, and shared his story with him. The two are now planning on running a clinical trial investigating the link between CBD oil and Type 2 diabetes. According to Filip, there is a real need to provide reliable data to understand whether CBD oil has the potential to treat Type 2 Diabetes.

“If it turns out CBD oil has a positive effect on Type 2 Diabetes, it would be extremely interesting and could make it worth pursuing as a potential treatment for glucose metabolic diseases.”

Stories like that shared by Simpson are seen by experts as the fuel that keeps CBD industry players, such as The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB), working hard to bring even more products to the market since lots of people are getting a better quality of life after using those products.
