Colombia Sends First CBD Shipments to Europe

September 23, 2019 08:00:27

Colombia has sent its first two batches of cannabidiol (CBD) to Europe as the Latin American country takes strides to become a global giant in the cannabis industry.

The exports come shortly after the Colombian government awarded its very first CBD isolate export license to Pharmacielo. This company has now used that permit to export its first batch of CBD oil to a Swiss company called Creso Pharma.

Another export license was granted to Clever Leaves, a company based in Bogota. This company has also succeeded in getting its first batch of CBD through customs and the products will be sold on the lucrative UK market.

Colombia is becoming an attractive destination for companies that want in on the lucrative cannabis industry because of the favorable weather, supportive government policies, affordable construction costs as well as the abundant and affordable labor.

Colombia decriminalized cannabis two decades ago and then the country passed a law in 2016 paving the way for medical marijuana to be grown, processed and exported from the country.

Reports from groups watching the international cannabis market reveal that while Colombia has laws allowing it to export medical marijuana, it doesn’t seem to have fared well on that front because the country has only managed to export a small volume of dried marijuana flower to Canada for research purposes.

It therefore appears that the real muscle of this South American country is likely to be flexed in the CBD industry since the two consignments to Europe indicate that Colombia has hit the ground running.

Colombia’s desire to be a major player on the cannabis world stage has attracted the attention of several Canadian CBD and marijuana companies.

For example, PharmaCielo, which is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, is in the final stages of acquiring Creso Pharma at a fee of $80 million. Creso Pharma is an Australian company that has operations in Switzerland, Canada, Israel and Columbia. The acquisition will therefore give PharmaCielo access to all those markets.

Aphria, Aurora and Canopy Growth Corp. have also come to Colombia and bought licensed producers in the country’s cannabis industry. Other international players are following suit and setting foot in Colombia.

All this attention shows that Colombia will be a force to reckon with since its unique attractions as a cannabis producer will enable this country to undercut other producers and shove them out of the market.

It would be enlightening to know what major CBD industry players like Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) have to say about the emergence of Colombia as a key player in the cannabis space.
