Company Files Patent for Water-Soluble CBD Delivery System

Just a year after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp, the market for hemp extract cannabidiol (CBD) is booming, and experts predict it will hit a whopping $20 billion by 2026. Most of this demand is driven by claims that the hemp extract is medically effective. Cannabidiol is said to be effective against a variety of illnesses, ranging from chronic pain and high blood pressure to anxiety.

The CBD molecule is fat-soluble, and like all fat-soluble molecules, has poor bioavailability. This refers to the percentage of CBD ingested that’s absorbed by the body. If, for instance, you ingest 10mg of CBD, and only 2 mg is absorbed, then that dose had 20% bioavailability.

Due to its poor bioavailability, higher doses of CBD have to be ingested for it to be effective, and this is both expensive and wasteful. However, a company has filed a patent for new technology that would change this. Holista CollTech filed its 100% owned global platform that will deliver fat-soluble medications, including cannabidiol, through a water-soluble delivery system.

The new technology will make current CBD formulas up to 40 times more potent, and this will not only reduce dosage significantly, but it will also make CBD more palatable to the elderly and young.

“Working on developing this technology is exciting. Most medicines consumed orally are wasted due to their poor absorption by the body. This is especially true for CBD, which is also expensive,” says Project Leader and head of Holista’s Technical Advisory Panel, Dr. Roscoe Moore Jr. He is the retired Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, and he currently sits on several company boards linked to CBD in the U.S. and Canada.

“More importantly, the integrity of the final molecule is preserved exactly as it is found in nature, and hence, there is no apparent need for any lengthy approval process anywhere in the world. We only use materials certified as ‘Generally Regarded as Safe’ (GRAS) by the FDA,” he adds.

The company will also implement taste-masking technology to make CBD a little easier on the tongue. Cannabidiol oil has a musty, bitter, lingering taste due to a high concentration of organic compounds, and this makes oral consumption quite difficult. Holista’s taste-masking technology will use GRAS botanicals to make such medications more palatable.

“Holista drew from parallel work done on the turmeric molecule which is also very fat-soluble,” says Dr. Swanand Malode, leader of the teams in Europe and Asia that worked on the technology for more than five years.

It is believed that CBD companies like LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) and HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) see the new delivery system as something that will benefit the entire industry and not just the company behind the patent.
