Could CBD Be the Answer to Hangovers?

December 9, 2019 09:00:07

Interest in hemp extract cannabidiol (CBD) for the past few years has steadily been on the rise, with CBD growing from an obscure product into an industry worth billions. Packed with potent medicinal properties, the compound is said to cure a never-ending list of ailments ranging from insomnia, anxiety to high blood pressure.

But can this versatile medicine treat something that has plagued people since drinking for pleasure became a thing? Hangovers are the bane of the drinker’s morning. It’s quite ironic that with all the medical advances we’ve had, hangovers would be a thing of the past but that sadly isn’t the case.

The morning after a night of drinking still remains extremely uncomfortable, and people are turning to CBD, wondering if the hemp extract is the hangover remedy we’ve always wanted.

There are lots of remedies that claim to be effective against hangovers, but for the most part, the best thing to do is to get in bed with lots of water and a bucket by your side and just ride it out. But it’s just so freaking uncomfortable, isn’t it?

Hangovers are usually characterized by nausea, headaches, trouble sleeping, and sore muscles. Although their exact cause isn’t known, it’s a fact that the ethanol in alcohol dehydrates the body.

However, that’s not where CBD comes in. A lot of the symptoms that make hangovers so bad can be alleviated by cannabidiol, and some posit that in this regard, the hemp extract would tamp down these symptoms.

While it would be great to say without a doubt that CBD will cure your hangover, there’s barely any research to back the claim. Jennifer Landa, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Physician at BodyLogicMD, gives a more descriptive explanation of how CBD interacts with the body to reduce common hangover systems.

Phytocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ESC). In the body, there are compounds that bind to the EC receptors (endocannabinoids bind to these to signal to the ESC that it needs to take action).”

“When these transmitters are present in smaller numbers, you might experience more pain or feel more anxious, but phytocannabinoids like CBD help increase their levels, potentially reducing your symptoms,” she adds.

Although there’s no concrete research to prove it, many still wonder. Dr. Brigitte Zeitlin suggests adding broad-spectrum CBD to your morning coffee or tea if you’re feeling hung-over. She adds, though, that the best defense is a good offense.

“Drink a glass of water or plain seltzer water for every alcoholic drink you have. Then, if you are feeling very achy the next day, taking CBD may help, but you still need to hydrate.”

It would be interesting to hear what recommendations CBD companies, such as Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) and SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING), have on how to get the best results when using CBD to deal with the symptoms of a hangover.
