Could Smoking CBD Relieve Flu Symptoms?

January 21, 2020 09:00:14

It’s hard to believe that as civilized as we are, and with all the advancements we’ve made, a silly little flu will curse you to a week of intense discomfort. While there are tons of over the counter medications designed to make the ordeal more bearable, you have to let the infection run its course. And more often than not, it’s an extremely sucky experience.

Enter cannabidiol or CBD. It is extracted from hemp, and according to anecdotal evidence, it is an extremely potent and versatile natural medicine. It is said to be effective against a range of illnesses, including chronic pain, anxiety, high blood pressure, and depression.

Last year, the FDA approved a CBD-based drug to treat seizures in two rare and hard to treat pediatric epilepsies, Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.

So how does the chemical work against the indomitable flu? For starters, let’s note that cannabidiol won’t cure your flu. Rather, it will neutralize some of the symptoms that make it so uncomfortable, making it easier to rest and wait out the infection.

Inflammation is one of the worst ones, and it’s caused by the body’s immune system working overtime to rid itself of the virus. When the flu strikes, it’s usually accompanied by blocked nasal and sinus passageways, and this is caused by inflammation. It results in a stuffy nose and sore throat that makes it difficult to breathe. CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and it can open up these passageways and make it a little easier for you to breathe.

Dr. Shawn Meirovici is a naturopathic doctor from Toronto who specializes in pain management. He says that although there’s no direct link between cannabis use and treating colds and the flu, a growing body of evidence suggests that the symptoms can be managed if cannabis is used responsibly.

“The cannabinoids THC and CBD have been shown to have pain-relieving, sleep-inducing, and anti-inflammatory properties,” he says, adding that cannabis may help reduce inflammation of the airways and increase relaxation to help you sleep.”

He does, however, warn against smoking when you’re down with the flu. He says that smoking can further irritate the mucous membranes, making a cough or sore throat even worse.

Studies have also shown that cannabis can suppress immune response, so chances are the infection will take longer to dissipate. Still, if you feel you’ve done enough research on the matter, it would be better to use edible CBD. The flu might take a little longer to fade, but most of the symptoms, such as inflammation will be milder and easier to deal with.

What doesn’t CBD help with? It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that even CBD sector players like Dama Financial and Grapefruit Boulevard Investments Inc. (IGNG) are often surprised by the broad range of conditions for which CBD could provide relief.
