There’s a new trend in the pet industry, and that’s CBD for pets. CBD, or cannabidiol as the science nerds call it, is extracted from hemp, and according to the anecdotal evidence that’s piled up over the years, it is a powerful medicine. Users have claimed relief from a plethora of illnesses including chronic pain and insomnia.
As the market for CBD kept growing, sellers kept running into one question: can my pets use CBD? Naturally, pets get affected by all kinds of ailments, and the CBD pet industry grew around this concept. In 2018, it was valued at $8 million, and it’s expected to grow to $1.16 billion by 2022. Clearly, Americans love their pets, and they’re not shy about spending on them.
We all know how frantic the holidays can get. There are plans to go through and plenty of family to see, and it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed during this time. But did you know that dogs too get agitated by all the sights and sounds of the festivities?
“Much like humans, dogs also suffer from mental conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress. The symptoms can become exacerbated during the holiday season,” says Jeremy Feldman, Co-founder and Brand Director of Pet-Ness.
There’s a reason why they’re called man’s best friend. Extremely intelligent, they are constantly aware of their surroundings, and they can suffer from stimulation overload. Just like their masters, dogs’ brains automatically release high amounts of adrenaline and cortisol to help cope with stressful situations.
How do you, as a pet owner, watch out for increased stress levels? Insistent barking, chewing on furniture, urinating indoors and aggression are signs of an overstimulated dog that needs help dealing with all the extra stimulation from the festivities.
“Some pet owners rely on anti-anxiety medications to slow down their pets’ nervous systems which can lead to some unwanted side effects and even a drugged like state,” says Andreana Pena, Founder of pet brand Blooming Culture.
Feldman points out that just like humans, dogs have an endocannabinoid system (ESC) with endocannabinoid receptors called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors.
“These receptors regulate the release of cytokines (signaling proteins) that are a contributing factor for helping regulate mood disorders such as depression. When dogs ingest CBD, it stimulates their CB1 and CB2 receptors which gives them the sensation of wellbeing and a calm state of mind.”
According to Pena, cannabidiol creates homeostasis within their bodies and lessens their fight or flight mode.
However, questions still remain on dosage. Dr. Debra Kimless, Chief Medical Officer of Pure Green, says there is no one size fits all method for administering CBD to a dog. “Every dog breed is different, and every dog within each breed is an individual and responds uniquely to medications.”
He advises pet owners to start with a low dose of CBD and then watch and see how the dog responds. “If the dog is still exhibiting signs of stress and anxiety, then administer a little more until the anxiety and stress behaviors are reduced or stop.”
Analysts believe that many cannabidiol companies, such as Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) and Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA), could be hard at work looking for the best way to administer CBD to pets without exposing those pets to any avoidable risks.
