How Many Drops of Cannabidiol Bring Pain Relief?

December 5, 2019 16:00:33

Let’s talk a little about cannabidiol (CBD). You have undoubtedly heard of the hemp extract, famous as it is these days. The cannabidiol market was already worth at least one billion by the end of 2018, and experts say it could grow to more than $20 billion by 2026. Last year, CBD gummies were the third most searched for food in the United States.

Packed with potent and versatile medicinal properties, cannabidiol is said to be effective against anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, and a myriad of other diseases. But perhaps, CBD’s most common use, at least in the U.S., is for pain relief.

CBD has long been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties, something that’s common to the cannabis family. It has become an extremely popular pain-relieving alternative to pharmaceuticals which, unfortunately, often come with side effects.

The compound interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ESC), a peripheral nervous system that’s involved in regulating sleep, pain, the immune system, and appetite.

But how much CBD oil do you have to take to feel its effects? That’s the million-dollar question. You see, industries such as CBD come along only once in a while. Sectors that grow and expand so rapidly that regulators are left scrambling to catch up. Although there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence on CBD’s efficacy, there’s tragically little scientific research to back it.

All products that end up on the shelves of stores have to go through an approval process, especially if they claim to treat an ailment. In CBD’s case, there are barely any clinical trials, and most research is still in its early stages. Such trials would have found out the proper dosages, but most people using CBD are just making educated guesses when dosing.

Your dose would depend on your age, genetics, weight, body chemistry and other factors. Admittedly, the best move would be to consult a doctor familiar with you and your medical history before taking CBD.

For pain relief, most people recommend starting with 5mg of CBD oil. You can gradually up the dose if the effects don’t kick in. Some people prefer to dose at different times of the day instead of a single large dose.

The trick is to start at a lower dose then gradually increase it until you hit that sweet spot where there’s enough CBD in your system that it can actively interact with the ESC system, and give you the desired effects.

This lack of standardized dosing recommendations could explain why cannabidiol companies like Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) and VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) allocate a lot of resources to user education so that the benefits of CBD can be enjoyed without using more product than is necessary.
