How Much CBD Oil Does Your Body Actually Absorb?

December 26, 2019 16:00:19

Cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming increasingly prevalent these days. CBD products can be found in convenience stores, pharmacies and online in the thousands, and people are buying them all. Last year, the market for CBD was worth at least $1 billion, but experts estimate it will hit $20 billion by 2026, an astronomical growth rate.

According to Google, CBD gummy bears were the third most searched for food by Americans. The chemical’s popularity stems from its healing abilities. Cannabidiol is chock full of potent medicinal properties, and it’s effective against a range of ailments including chronic pain, anxiety, and depression.

Last June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug to treat seizures in two rare pediatric epilepsies.

So, at least in that one case, CBD has been proven to be medically effective. Still, research on the compound remains scant, leaving questions to do with effectiveness, safety, and dosage unanswered.

Another question that’s been floating around is about absorption, and specifically, how much CBD can the body absorb? It’s hard to put a number on it, actually. The amount absorbed would depend on various factors including how you consume the compound, your body’s makeup and physiological processes.

It doesn’t matter how much CBD a product claims to contain: your body will absorb a set amount. The process through which CBD is transferred from the site of application (how it was consumed or applied) is referred to as ‘bioavailability’.

The term describes the rate and total amount of CBD that has an effect after the product is consumed or applied. It is measured as a percentage of the total CBD consumed. Edibles, for instance, have a low (6%) bioavailability despite being extremely popular. This means that the body will absorb only 6% of the CBD in your gummy bear. Even if you take a couple of them, only 6% of the CBD will be absorbed.

When ingested, the CBD first enters the digestive system before being absorbed. It has to pass through the portal vein into the liver to be metabolized, but enzymes in the liver reduce the concentration of the CBD before it enters the bloodstream.

Inhaling CBD has proven to be the fastest way to feel the effects. Due to the large, highly permeable surface of the lungs, inhaling CBD has an extremely high bioavailability, making it another popular means of application.

You could also ‘trick’ your body into absorbing more of the CBD you take. Supplementing your diet with healthy fats like hummus and avocados has been found to greatly increase the bioavailability and effectiveness of cannabidiol.

The next time you want to consume a cannabis edible, you might be well advised to pay attention to the information provided by sector players, such as LiveWire Ergogenics Inc.
