How the Endocannabinoid System and CBD Work Together

January 24, 2020 09:00:58

Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been making waves recently, especially in the medical, sports, health and wellness communities. Extracted from hemp, the chemical is said to be an extremely potent natural medicine. Some of the conditions users claim CBD works against include chronic pain, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Hemp is part of the cannabis family, with the difference being THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) levels, and research into how cannabis interacts with the body led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The endocannabinoid system is a nervous system that’s responsible for regulating a range of functions and processes including sleep, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction, and fertility. The system is actively regulating these processes, and you don’t need to use cannabis to kickstart it. Back in the eighties, scientists were researching how THC, the active component of marijuana that makes you high, interacts with the brain when they found the first cannabinoid receptor in the brain of a rat.

The receptor interacted exclusively with molecules found in THC, and the researchers realized that the cannabinoid receptors were concentrated in areas of the brain that regulate a number of physiological and mental processes like emotion, motor coordination, high cognition, and memory.

The ECS consists of three core components, endogenous endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are similar to the cannabinoids produced by cannabis, but they’re made by the body. They bind to the CB1 receptors, mostly found in the central nervous system, and CB2 receptors, found in the peripheral nervous system. The effects that result from binding depend on where the receptor is located and which endocannabinoid binds to it.

When you take cannabidiol, it binds with either the CB1 receptors or the CB2 receptors in your body, and it can alter or improve that receptor’s capabilities, thus improving its functionality. That’s why teenagers are advised to stay away from marijuana. Since they are still developing, introducing cannabinoids from an outside source will make the body produce less of its own endocannabinoids, and it won’t properly develop that capability.

It’s what’s called endocannabinoid deficiency, and it could cause a number of health issues like irritability and headaches. You see, the ECS is concerned with maintaining homeostasis, that is, inner balance. If, for instance, you’re in pain, the body is out of balance, and the system will kick into action to restore you back to base.

Cannabidiol acts as a boost to the system. It binds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, and this greatly increases the ESC’s ability to maintain vital health functions and helps restore balance within the body.

Experts say this ability to restore balance to different body systems could explain why different cannabidiol industry players, such as MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC), credit CBD for helping people with a diverse array of conditions.
