LA Spas Embrace CBD Products

You wouldn’t be wrong if you called hemp the breakout plant of the decade. Very rarely do we come across a crop with such versatility. Hemp has been said to have thousands of uses, ranging from industrial to nutrition and textiles, but perhaps its best achievement to date is cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids are a unique group of chemicals produced by the cannabis plant. We don’t know a lot about them, but we do know they have tons of medicinal properties. Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the few cannabinoids that are actively being researched, and it seems to hold a lot of medical potential.

Users claim they’re effective against everything from high blood pressure and anxiety to chronic pain and insomnia. And in the short year hemp and its extracts have been legal, CBD has become quite popular.

Los Angeles, especially, is seeing a rise in the number of CBD establishments, and they aren’t limited to cannabidiol infused foods and beverages. CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory effects, and a number of spas have started using CBD in their treatments.

Amu Duncan is the founder of the Mowellens CBD skincare line used at The Spa at the West Hollywood Edition, and she says that hemp is the plant of our generation. “CBD and really whole-plant hemp extract with terpenes have the ability to transform the skin,” she says.

Ian Schrager’s new West Hollywood hotel has a spa that’s committed to wellness and plant-derived products, CBD being a top contender. The spa offers three CBD treatments, the 50 minute CBD Supernatural facial ($300) with Mowellens CBD honey mask that leaves skin ‘rejuvenated, hydrated and glowing,’ the CBD Drench body treatment ($375) uses an exfoliating CBD to clear blemishes, and the CBD + Sticks and Stones massage (50-80 minutes, $350-$425) which combines CBD massage oil, bamboo sticks and hot Stones to induce ‘a state of total relaxation.’

The LA Prairie Spa at Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills integrated CBD into a wellness program launched back in November 2019. Spa director Amanda Raich says the program is designed for guests to experience more non-traditional spa treatments in a luxury setting. For $75, guests can enhance any facial or body treatments with a CBD-infused pain-relieving massage cream applied by a therapist. On top of that, you get to take what’s left home.

The Ritz Carlton Spa in Los Angeles debuted CBD treatments back in 2018. Their collection features a healing massage with up to five hemp-based products (50 minutes, $245-$310), a pedicure with CBD soak and oil($120) and facial ($225).

According to Rachel Stacy, director of spa operations at the Hotel Casa del Mar’s Sea Wellness Spa in Santa Monica, their treatments are designed with head to toe relaxation for their clients in mind, “whether they have chronic pain and ailments or just want the benefits of CBD massage cream or oil.”

It is widely believed that CBD industry actors like HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) are convinced that it is just a matter of time before CBD makes its presence felt in not just the spa sector but in every other aspect of life due to its immense benefits and versatility.
