Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the many active cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It exploded from obscurity when the 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp (cannabis varieties with less than 0.3% THC) after decades of illegality.
The chemical is a potent and versatile medicine, with people using it to help manage anxiety, pain, insomnia and a plethora of other conditions. Thanks to human ingenuity and technical advancements, people are always finding new ways to take CBD. These days, the hemp extract is in everything from tinctures and topicals to gummies and coffees.
But have you heard of CBD patches? Just as the name says, they are patches that contain a measured dose of CBD molecules infused in an isolated solution, gel or oil. While the final product looks like a typical skin patch, there’s nothing typical about the manufacturing practices used to make them.
They combine the CBD with carriers and permeation enhancers to make sure the patches’ high concentration of CBD gets into your system quicker and more effectively.
The most common CBD patches on the market are matrix patches and reservoir patches. Usually, patches are more effective and efficient at delivering CBD compared to other means like edibles.
Matrix patches contain 5 layers; a peel-off layer that protects the cannabidiol, a matrix layer infused with the CBD, a separating layer, an adhesive layer that holds the matrix layer to the skin, and a protective backing layer.
Reservoir patches, on the other hand, are a little different. Like the matrix patches, they still have a peel-off layer, an adhesive and a protective backing. However, their secret weapon is the CBD reservoir’s permeable release membrane that can be fine-tuned to control the CBD delivery rate. This way, the patch releases the CBD at a controlled rate, ensuring you get the therapeutic benefits over a while instead of in just one quickly fading dose.
In that regard, reservoir patches offer a much better option for CBD delivery efficiency than matrix patches.
CBD patches work in a simple but complicated way: they pass CBD directly into the skin cell’s cannabinoid receptors, and it diffuses through the cells into the bloodstream, finally interacting with the endocannabinoid system to produce a number of therapeutic effects.
Patches are extremely efficient at delivering CBD to the system. About 50% of the total CBD applied gets into the system, a lot more than the 5% that gets absorbed when you ingest CBD.
For the best results, they should be applied to areas with a high concentration of blood vessels close to the surface of the skin, like the back of the neck, wrists, upper arms, and shoulders.
