Why Soccer Players Are Embracing CBD

December 2, 2019 09:00:39

Earlier this year, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed cannabidiol (CBD) from the 2020 list of prohibited substances, stating that “all natural and synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited except cannabidiol.” And way before that, the FIFA World Cup Committee, recognizing the compound’s medicinal value, allowed athletes participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup to use it as they see fit.

Cannabidiol has insanely potent medicinal properties, and it has been found effective against a wide range of conditions. Although it works against insomnia, high blood pressure and so many other diseases, it’s anti-inflammatory properties make CBD especially attractive to athletes. It is a natural pain-relieving alternative to pharmaceuticals which, let’s be honest, tend to be addictive and have side effects.

Soccer players put their bodies and minds through a lot of physical and mental strain, with some South American and European players playing up to 50 games per season, not to mention any tournaments their national teams take part in. Then, when they get called to play for their team in the World Cup, they usually have a few weeks to recover before the intense club competition begins.

That kind of strain is bound to affect you, with a lot of players dealing with fatigue and injuries, coupled with the sheer mental stress of such a packed and demanding schedule. Cannabidiol offers a great way to deal with this. Instead of turning to potentially addictive and harmful pharmaceuticals, players are using CBD products to deal with these issues. It is a powerful pain reliever, and it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Not to mention, it reduces anxiety and sharpens focus.

A couple of famous athletes have already made their love for cannabidiol known. One such athlete is Megan Rapinoe, an Olympic gold medalist, two time Women’s World Cup champion and Women’s World Cup player of the year. She is sponsored by Mendi, a company that specializes in CBD sports recovery products for athletes. “I wanted a healthier, more natural option for pain management, sleep aid, relaxation while flying and general recovery,” she says.

“Mendi’s mission really stuck with me. The decision to serve athletes and be our trusted brand, but also their commitment to a healthier lifestyle, and changing the status quo around pain management and sports.”

“I think there is still a lot of stigma around the use of CBD and cannabis in soccer, and there needs to be greater education so athletes can make more informed decisions,” she says.

Experts believe that cannabidiol companies like Grapefruit Boulevard Investments Inc. (OTCQB: IGNG) and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) aren’t surprised that CBD is becoming commonplace among athletes since it has immense benefits that suit their intense lifestyle.
