Why the NFL Should Allow Athletes to Use Cannabidiol

Chances are you’ve already heard of cannabidiol (CBD), or if you haven’t, someone next to you has. Despite being barely known just a few years ago, the hemp extract is all the rage these days. Last year, CBD gummy bears were the third most searched for food by Americans, and interest in CBD-infused products is expected to increase with time.

Cannabidioil’s strength lies in its medical applications. It is a potent natural medicine, and for the past few years, plenty of anecdotal evidence has surfaced painting the compound as a sort of miracle drug. Scientific research is beginning to prove many of those claims right. CBD has been found effective against a wide variety of medical conditions including high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety and chronic pain.

Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a CBD based drug to help manage rare and hard to treat seizures in pediatric epilepsies.

CBD has also aroused plenty of interest in the sporting community, especially in regards to its pain relieving capabilities. While opioids can be pretty effective at relieving pain, they come at a cost, dependency and liver damage. Cannabidiol, on the other hand, works like a charm against pain, with the added bonus of zero side effects. This makes it an extremely attractive alternative to opioids, especially in a community that suffers high injury rates.

For athletes who lift weights, run marathons, play football, soccer or any other extraneous sport, recovery time is essential too if they hope to get back in the game and perform to the best of their ability.

Still, questions remain concerning CBD’s status. Is it a drug? Does it enhance performance? Is it intoxicating? Unfortunately, due to hemp’s long status as a controlled substance, there’s little research on cannabinoids, the compounds that occur naturally within the cannabis plants. However, one thing is clear, and that is that cannabidiol is non-intoxicating.

There are over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and cannabidiol and THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) account for a large percentage of the cannabinoids. As per the 2018 Farm Bill, all hemp grown for industrial use has to have less than 0.3% THC levels. Ideally, all CBD products should have the same miniscule levels of THC, thereby making them non-intoxicating.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about what athletes have to gain from using CBD. For starters, it’s an excellent pain reliever. It also helps reduce muscle spasms, reduces anxiety and improves the quality of sleep. On top of that, CBD is a potent anti-inflammatory, and it helps with muscle soreness, while also being great for muscle recovery.

Recently, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of illegal substances. However, most sports leagues are yet to take that step.

It would be interesting to know what specific products CBD companies like Dama Financial and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) have to address the issues athletes face in their day to day work.
