420 with CNW — Cannabis and Fibromyalgia: What Does Available Research Say?

January 21, 2021 04:25:50

Despite its controversial reputation, cannabis has been slowly but surely building a reputation as a potent and versatile alternative to pharmaceuticals. While most experts agree the hype around cannabis has far outpaced the science, preliminary studies and anecdotal evidence have found it to be effective against everything from stress and anxiety to chronic pain and seizures. In the recent past, there has been increasing evidence that cannabis can help reduce the effects of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread, frequent and intense musculoskeletal pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 4 million adults in the United States suffer from fibromyalgia. On top of chronic musculoskeletal pain, people with fibromyalgia also experience headaches and migraines, memory and concentration issues, depression and anxiety. In some cases, they may also suffer from lethargy, sleep disturbances, and fatigue as well as emotional or mental distress.

Fibromyalgia is an exacting condition that can greatly diminish the quality of daily life. While there are pharmaceuticals available to treat fibromyalgia, more people have been turning to cannabis as alternative medicine. Research has found that thanks to their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, cannabinoids can help alleviate some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, such as pain. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant, and they include THC and cannabidiol (CBD).

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 2020 sought to better understand how high-THC cannabis oil could be used to treat fibromyalgia symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life. Researchers gave 17 women with fibromyalgia 1.22 mg of THC and 0.02 mg of CBD every day with subsequent increases in dosage based on their symptoms. Additionally, the participants answered a Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire before and after they received the cannabis oil and during five visits over the course of eight weeks.

The researchers concluded that cannabinoids such as THC and CBD can be a low-cost, easy-on-the-body therapy for women with fibromyalgia to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. However, they noted that more studies will have to be done to determine long-term benefits of using cannabis to reduce fibromyalgia symptoms as well as how different cannabis varieties will affect treatment.

For these treatments to be effective, cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex cell-signaling system that regulates functions such as mood, sleep, appetite, and memory. These functions contribute to the body’s homeostasis or internal balance. The researchers who conducted the 2020 study stated that conditions such as fibromyalgia, IBS and migraines, which are characterized by chronic pain, may be partly attributed to the “deregulation” of the ECS.

By interacting with the ECS, cannabinoids such as THC and CBD can give the system a little boost, allowing it to do its job of maintaining internal balance more effectively.

Still on the subject of using cannabis compounds as a medicine, RYAH Group Inc. is set to revolutionize how cannabis medicines are developed and administered. For example, the company has a precise dose-measuring IoT solution that makes it possible for clinical trial teams to be as exact as possible during candidate drug trials involving human subjects.
