A recent Fox News article by Stephen Sorace detailed an investigation into several hemp fields in California which uncovered 10 million illicit cannabis plants. According to the update, the plants, with a “black market” value of over $1 billion, were seized and destroyed by authorities. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook that on October 25, after obtaining a search warrant, investigators searched 11 different fields in the Arvin area, located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. With assistance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (“CDFW”) and FBI, authorities swept through 459 acres of land where the plants were grown under what, the sheriff’s office said, appeared to be a legitimate hemp operation. Plant samples were tested to determine levels of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, with findings “well above” the legal 0.3 percent limit for industrial hemp production, essentially making the plants cannabis, authorities said.
