Audi Unveils Its Most Affordable EV

April 30, 2021 10:16:38

With the world moving towards fully electrifying the transport sector, most established carmakers have developed or are currently developing their own electric offerings in a bid to stay relevant in a changing automotive industry. Although most electric vehicles (“EVs”) are too pricey for average drivers, EV makers such as Tesla have made a killing by targeting eco-friendly drivers with heftier checkbooks. On April 14, German car manufacturer Audi announced a new EV model that is without a doubt one of the more affordable in the luxury electric vehicle segment.

Starting at a retail price of $45,000, the new Q4 E-Tron will be Audi’s most affordable electric vehicle model. U.S. federal EV tax credits should cut the price of the Q4 E-Tron’s least expensive version down to $37,500, making it slightly cheaper than the best-selling Tesla Model 3 and a lot cheaper than the recently released Model Y. The only other luxury electric vehicle in the market that has a somewhat similar price is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which has been giving Tesla plenty of competition, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which costs $9,000 more than Audi’s latest offering.

The most basic, or entry-level, version of the Q4 E-Tron will only have rear-wheel drive while the more expensive versions will be equipped with all-wheel drive capabilities. The electric motor in the base model will have a maximum output of 201 horsepower with a single charge giving the EV around 250 miles of range. The more expensive versions of the Q4 E-Tron will have two electric motors in the front and back capable of producing up to 295 horsepower.

The electric motor at the front will stay dormant most of the time, only coming alive in situations where more traction or power is needed to move the vehicle. The Q4 E-Tron will come in two slightly different shapes, a sportback version and a regular crossover SUV. Compared to the SUV, the Sportback will have a sloped rear end, and it will only be available with all-wheel drive. The SUV will also have all-wheel drive capabilities, but the front wheel will only kick in when the vehicle needs more power or traction.

In terms of size, the Q4 E-Tron is fairly small, being just a bit larger than Audi’s smallest SUV in the United States, the Audi Q3. Still, Audi executives note that the interior is almost as roomy as the larger Audi Q5. Audi hasn’t released pricing details for the Q4 E-Tron’s more expensive versions at the moment.

As EV makers such as Audi are catering to the luxury market, others, including ev Transportation Services Inc., are looking to address the needs of other segments of the industry, such as the transportation needs of grounds maintenance crews as well as parking enforcement teams.
