Electrified Golf Carts Find Use as Everyday Vehicles in America

August 11, 2023 14:07:42

America’s quest to electrify the millions of petrol or diesel-powered cars on its roads has taken an interesting turn as a growing number of U.S. residents have begun adopting electric golf carts, rather than conventional battery electric vehicles, as their daily drivers. Electrified golf carts have become a popular choice for American families looking for a second vehicle in recent years.

Usually seen zipping around golf courses and country clubs, electrified gold carts are making appearances in regular neighborhoods thanks to increased adoption by Americans. For the average U.S. driver, electric golf carts present an opportunity to adopt EV technology without breaking the bank.

Electric vehicle technology has come a long way since Tesla released the first public EV model over a decade ago, and automakers are making more improvements each year. EVs are more efficient, have higher ranges, and produce little to zero carbon emissions, making them a great option for a world looking to limit its reliance on oil and combat climate change.

However, the average electric vehicle is significantly more expensive than comparable fossil fuel-powered cars. This locks out a significant portion of the U.S. population from transitioning to electric cars and will ultimately harm America’s climate-change goals.

Compact and affordable options such as the electrified golf cart could fill a major market gap and put the United States on track to achieving carbon neutrality. Modern models offer high battery life, smooth rides and a variety of creature comfort choices. Their affordability, coupled with extremely low charging and maintenance costs, make these electric golf carts an especially attractive option for budget-conscious drivers who want to go electric.

In Georgia, Peachtree City is becoming famous for the multitudes of electric golf carts roaming its roads. The city has been extremely receptive to electric golf carts, designating smaller multiuse paths for small vehicles such as scooters, bikes and golf carts, and allowing drivers to operate them on many public roads.

Furthermore, Peachtree City provides electric golf cart drivers with shorter routes to avoid busier roads with larger cars. Many Peachtree City residents now prefer to use their golf carts for errands around town and short trips, while they continue to rely on ICE cars for longer journeys.

Ethan Luster, a golf cart dealer in Clearwater, Florida, says that communities in Florida are starting to accept golf carts as standard forms of travel. He explains that a lot of his out-of-state customers who move to Florida often buy a golf cart before they’ve even moved into their new houses, signifying the normality of owning a golf cart in such places.

Although some may be worried about the lack of safety features in golf carts, they are relatively safe when used for short trips in communities at slow speeds. Manufacturers have also begun incorporating safety features, including efficient braking, mirrors and seatbelts, into newer models.

This use of golf carts shows how hungry the public is for affordable EVs, and manufacturers such as Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) would be well advised to accelerate the development of models that are intended for those earning lower incomes who can’t afford the high-end versions of these ecofriendly modes of transportation.
