In addition, ammonia presents advantages over the generally preferred green energy solutions that rely on hydrogen. Hydrogen can be stored physically as either a gas or a liquid, however the storage and transportation process is complicated because such storage typically requires high-pressure tanks and cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, improvements in the technology necessary to store and transport hydrogen are generally considered key to advancing its use as a renewable solution (

Ammonia, however, is easy to store and transport using existing infrastructure. Its chemical symbol, NH3, is often referred to as hydrogen nitride instead of ammonia in recognition of its nitrogen and three hydrogen atoms. That structure makes ammonia the ideal carrier for hydrogen — in addition to the portability of FuelPositive’s technology, the end user can convert the green ammonia back to its hydrogen element to be used to produce electricity in a hydrogen fuel cell.
It’s also much less expensive to manufacture carbon free ammonia than pure hydrogen by volume, according to the company.
FuelPositive’s carbon-free production process also eliminates fertilizer-related carbon emissions in the agriculture sector. Currently, the agriculture industry remains the largest user of ammonia. Over 80 percent of traditional ammonia is used as fertilizer.
The analysis by emissions reduction and carbon credit specialist Andre Mech that FuelPositive commissioned found that Canada has enough off-peak green electricity to produce carbon free ammonia to fuel 63 percent of all the passenger cars, light trucks, passenger aviation, buses, light rail, motorcycles, freight trucking, freight aviation, rail, marine and other sector vehicles in the country using non-polluting, carbon-free NH3 as a fuel.
The analysis also found that Canada has enough off-peak green electricity to produce carbon free ammonia to fuel 100 percent of the passenger and commercial freight needs of its industries.
