IAMGOLD and Agnico Eagle have been selected by the Community of Interest Advisory Panel of the Mining Association of Canada to receive the Towards Sustainable Mining (“TSM”) Excellence Awards. The two companies are both major players in the Canadian mining sector and are being recognized for their inventive sustainability projects that are focused on environmental and community engagement.
TSM, which was established in 2004, supports mining companies in managing various social and environmental risks. The internationally recognized program also facilitates the evaluation, validation and public reporting of 8 crucial facets of environmental and social performance against 30 performance indicators.
On the other hand, TSM’s Excellence awards were established in 2014. They are overseen by the aforementioned advisory panel, which is made up of individuals from environmental organizations, Indigenous groups, faith-based and social organizations, and finance and academic groups, as well as labor representatives. The panel also offers advice and guidance on the implementation and development of TSM while also being in charge of picking out the award winners.
CEO and president of the Mining Association Pierre Gratton stated that as the coronavirus pandemic continued to impact countries around the world, it had become clear that minerals found in everything from low-carbon technology such as wind turbines and solar panels to the health care sector, were important in everyday lives, which is why it was absolutely necessary that these minerals be responsibly sourced.
He noted that the TSM Awards represented what companies in the Canadian mining sector were doing to implement collaborative and innovative sustainable practices.
TSM is also focused on allowing mining companies to meet society’s need for energy products, metals and minerals in the most environmentally and socially responsible way. The program has been extremely successful in encouraging mining companies to adopt sustainable practices. Additionally, its global presence is growing as it has been adopted by mining associations in countries such as Norway, Botswana, Finland, Brazil, the Philippines, Argentina, Spain and Australia.
Agnico Eagle is being awarded for its drinking water distribution network initiative, which uses low-carbon technology to provide a continuous supply of clean drinking water to individuals who live near the Pinos Altos mine in Mexico. Concurrently, IAMGOLD is being awarded for its work with a local entrepreneur in Burkina Faso to develop a plastics recycling business to be used to manage water generated by the mining site, which lacked a recycling facility.
The recognition of these mining companies doesn’t mean that others in North America aren’t doing their part to operate sustainably. In fact, companies such as Asia Broadband Inc. (OTC: AABB) have made eco-friendliness a key facet of all they do as they extract minerals and sell them within the Asian market.
