Could Psychedelics Be Used to Understand Near-Death Experiences?

June 22, 2021 08:50:59

For decades now, researchers have been unable to decipher what exactly causes a near-death experience. While most scientific studies haven’t delved into the study of near-death experiences, researchers have discovered that the characteristics of these incidents remain constant 20 years after they occurred. This discovery offers researchers an opportunity to learn more about these incidents first-hand and call attention to the foundational characteristics of near-death experiences.

A recent study found that near-death experiences were marked by the infamous tunnel of light, an out-of-body experience and a feeling of inner peace. Additionally, scientists are discovering that psychedelics may play a big role in helping understand what goes on during a near-death experience.

Seminal psychedelic researcher and neuroscientist Rick Strassman agrees with this idea. He began carrying out research in the late ‘90s with DMT, which comprised of him administering the potent psychedelic substance to participants in his laboratory. Strassman stated that he observed each of his participants go through a revolutionary transformation, adding that they ventured into other worlds, met indescribable entities and saw visions.

While most people believe that near-death experiences are basically glimpses into the afterlife, Strassman hypothesizes that an individual’s brain gives rise to these mystical states in regards to death when it releases a large amount of DMT. This is possible because the compound is found in the human body and also occurs in various species in the plant and animal kingdoms.

While the hypothesis may sound improbable, near-death experiences and the psychedelic state have been found to share similarities. For instance, research has discovered that near-death experiences, much like psychedelics, cause an increase in a person’s appreciation of nature and decrease anxiety associated with death while also bringing about long-term increases in an individual’s psychological well-being.

Despite these similarities, the theory put forward by Strassman is yet to be supported by other studies.

Earlier in 2018, a group of scientists tried to authenticate the link between near-death experiences and DMT. For their study, the researchers injected 13 participants with DMT and a placebo in two different sessions then utilized the NDE scale to evaluate their experiences. This led to the discovery that the experiences brought on by DMT were surprisingly similar to those reported after a near-death experience.

A separate study, which was conducted in 2019, used deep lexical analysis to study the relationship between near-death encounters and psychedelic substances. In this study, researchers fed the computer reports of near-death encounters, written accounts of experiences under the influence of these substances and 15 thousand trip reports. These reports comprised of experiences under the influence of ketamine, psilocybin and DMT. The study also revealed impressive similarities between the characteristics of near-death experiences and the experiences under the influence of the psychedelic substances.
