How Attitudes About Drugs Have Been Evolving

July 20, 2020 14:05:11

The last two decades have seen a huge change in society’s collective perspective on drugs. Surprisingly, even traditionally taboo drugs like psychedelics have slowly become accepted in some parts of the world. Some party drugs like ketamine and MDMA are even being respected as therapeutic drugs.

This sudden shift can be seen in the legalization of marijuana in different states, and countries around the world. Just a short while ago, marijuana was in the eyes of the society, a drug used by lazy, idle people and drug addicts. That image has now almost been fully erased and replaced with that of a known prescription medicine.

Interestingly, some of the drugs which were not considered dangerous in the past are now slowly losing popularity especially with the youth. An example can be given of the increase in alcohol-free beers. Alcohol use has declined with many people reducing the amount of alcohol they consume while some have quit drinking altogether.

Caffeine, which for a long time was not considered a drug, is recently beginning to spark a different opinion in users. People have realized that caffeine is actually an addictive drug and the addiction to coffee is no longer a surprising condition. This has led to many coffee users cutting back on their coffee intake.

Sugar is another good example of substances that had not until very recently been considering to be drugs. The growing societal view of sugar as a drug is set to grow in coming years just like that of coffee.

One of the main reasons we can attribute to this sudden change in attitudes towards drugs is the promotion of physical and mental health in recent years with the general term ‘wellness’. Some drugs like psychedelics have been found to be therapeutic thereby attracting former non-users.

A bigger contribution to this change has been made by advanced scientific research on drugs in recent years. A perfect example would be a research by the Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews on sugar. This report finds that as pervasive as sugar is, it meets the criteria to be an abused substance and is addictive to binge users.

Nootropics as a new category of drugs has also played a significant role in the societal acceptance of previously outlawed drugs. This is a category that comprises of all performance drugs that improve human body functions. It therefore comprises of a wide range of drugs from coffee, magic mushrooms to drugs like modafinil.

This trend is likely to continue in the future, especially for psychedelics. Traditionally accepted drugs like tobacco will probably eventually be outlawed as people learn the health benefits of psychedelics.

Experts say that these changes in attitude may be giving psychedelic companies like Numinus Wellness Inc. (TSX.V: NUMI) added impetus to invest more in R&D.
