Integration Proves Its Importance When Treating Mental Conditions Using Psychedelics

April 9, 2021 13:46:05

For a big chunk of his adult life, Nick Watchorn suffered from serious PTSD, before seeking psychedelic treatments, which helped him manage his condition.

Watchorn revealed that the psychoactive sessions he attended and the work that he did on himself afterwards, through a process he refers to as integration, saved his life. He states that before he received the therapeutic treatments (MDMA-assisted therapy), he thought he was too far gone.

Watchorn, now 54, had been plagued for more than two decades by the memories of a mass shooting that he’d experienced as a young police officer. The shooting, which occurred in 1996 at Port Arthur, left 23 individuals wounded and 35 dead after a gunman went on a fatal shooting spree. This single gunman committed the worst massacre Australia has ever witnessed to date. Even years after that gruesome event, Watchorn was still affected by the classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, including destructive behavior, social isolation, depression and anxiety, which had been brought about by the experience.

After using pain medication and alcohol to help him cope and visiting various psychotherapists, Watchorn decided to participate in a breakthrough clinical study that would focus on treating post-traumatic stress disorder using MDMA. In 2018, he qualified to be a participant in the trial through Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (“MAPS”), having been plagued by symptoms of treatment resistant-post-traumatic stress disorder for 22 years. Before the trial with MDMA, which is commonly referred to as ecstasy, Watchorn had never consumed or ingested a psychoactive drug.

While under the influence of the psychoactive and under the supervision of trained therapists, Watchorn was confronted with various memories from his early childhood days during the three eight-hour clinical sessions, whose meaning he came to understand fully during integration therapy sessions.

Despite being one of the most crucial factors for success of a psychedelic experience, integration is often disregarded. Integration ensures that significant parts of the psychedelic experience are not ignored and allowed to fade out, which allows an individual to look deeper into themselves and get to understand the root cause of something. This is in addition to decreasing any harm that may follow soon after a challenging psychedelic experience.

The integration sessions Watchorn attended after his psychoactive sessions allowed him to reflect on the memories and emotions that had come up while he was under the influence of ecstasy and piece together the meaning of all of it. This put him on the path toward healing himself of his PTSD.

The world is eagerly awaiting what will come of the research and other psychedelic development work being done by entities such as MAPS, Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF) and other sector players.
