Methods to Access Psychedelics Legally

October 19, 2020 09:24:53

By now, you may know that lots of psychedelic substances are illegal federally, and you risk being persecuted or even arrested if you are found in possession of these substances. How, then, can one legally have a psychedelic experience? We discuss some of the available options in this blog post. Note that each of these options has its own pros and cons, so be sure to talk to your attorney and a trained medical professional before making a decision regarding any of these options.

Option #1: Enroll for a Clinical Trial

The use of psychedelics in mental health has generated a lot of interest and there are dozens of studies going on around the country to investigate the specific application of different psychedelics in managing or treating a variety of mental health conditions.

You can therefore search clinicaltrials.gov for a psychedelic study near you. Every clinical trial in the U.S. must be registered at that site, so you can type in a keyword and see what pops up in your state.

One possible advantage of joining a clinical trial in order to have a psychedelic experience is that the study is carefully designed before it gets FDA and DEA approval, so you are likely to be under the care of experienced professionals who have done everything possible to minimize any avoidable risks.

However, clinical trials also have possible drawbacks, such as the possibility that you could end up in a placebo group and yet your intention was to have a psychedelic experience.

Option #2: Become a Tourist

South and Central America have carved out a reputation for themselves as tourist destinations for people interested in taking ayahuasca. Other jurisdictions or countries, such as the Netherlands and Jamaica, also welcome ayahuasca tourists. Ayahuasca is protected in Central and South America because the brew is part of the culture and traditions of indigenous communities there.

Be informed that it can be costly to be a psychedelic tourist, and there are often no set standards regarding what goes into the ayahuasca cup you are given. There have also been cases of sexual assault reported during ayahuasca retreats, so you need to take all necessary precautions to protect yourself should you opt to be a psychedelics tourist.

Option #3: Join a Church

Currently, there are three churches which are legally allowed to use psychedelics during their religious ceremonies in the U.S. These are the Native American Church, the Uniao do Vegetal (“UDV”) church originating in Brazil, and Santo Daime.

Think carefully about the reasons why you would like to join a church permitted to use psychedelics during their religious ceremonies and be sure that your intentions will not in any way be counter to the interests of the religious community you are joining.

Like the options discussed earlier, churches may also have their own potential drawbacks. For example, how would you feel if you were gay and you sat in church while they described your orientation as a sin?

Several other options exist, such as trying atypical psychedelics (salvia divinorium and ketamine, for example). The number of companies entering the psychedelics space is also expanding rapidly, and that is a trend to watch. One company of interest is Pure Extract Technologies Inc. They are a plant-based extraction company which added a functional mushrooms vertical to their range of offerings in the recent past.
