Psychedelics Can Improve Moods for Hours Following Dosing

July 22, 2020 09:05:14

New research shows the impact of psychedelic substances on the mood of a patient hours after the treatment. As you may know, psychedelics, such as psilocybin, (magic mushrooms), LSD, and DMT cause psychological, auditory, and visual changes. It now emerges that they may also boost mood long after the high is gone.

The study was done by Yale University researchers who tested more than 1200 festival-goers and their findings revealed increased feelings of belonging and well-being. Take note that these were regular people and not patients confined in controlled clinical tests.

One of the students, Matthias Forstmann, stated that, “Our results show that people who take psychedelics ‘in the wild’ report positive experiences very similar to those observed in controlled laboratory studies.”

As part of the study, they carried out a survey that targeted art and music festival goers in the U.S. and UK. They were asked to give their experiences with psychedelics.

From the findings, they observed that those who used LSD and psilocybin reported having “transformative experiences” and that these feelings stayed with them for long periods, thereby resulting in a change in their moral value. They felt more socially connected and had a positive mood a day after taking psychedelics, the authors said.

On the other hand, they also studied those who didn’t take these hallucinogens and noted that they didn’t have these feelings. For instance, those who took other substances instead, such as alcohol or opioids, did not experience these positive mood changes.

Though the study did not focus on other reactions of the drug, especially any bad ones, they concluded that it was an indicator psychedelics could help treat mood disorders.

Another thing to consider is the environment or circumstances under which people take psychedelics. Another author of the study, Molly Crocket, suggested that there was a need for more studies to analyze and determine the environmental factors that may be impacting these reactions, whether positive or negative.

From the results, it is evident that psychedelics have a powerful influence on mood changes, similar to those observed in patients who take it as a treatment for mental illnesses. This is to say; it doesn’t matter whether you are sick or not; the effect of the drug is the same.

Crocket reinforces this in a Yale release, “We are encouraged that our study is consistent with previous laboratory findings showing mood benefits of psychedelics in healthy people, and in patients suffering from anxiety and depression.”

All details of this study are available in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” Experts say these research findings are likely to encourage psychedelics companies like StemSation to work harder to bring psychedelic drugs into the mainstream.
