Study Finds Men Who Use Psychedelics Less Likely to Be Violent to Their Partners

July 2, 2021 11:05:17

Research conducted by scientists from the University of British Columbia has discovered evidence that men who have used psychedelic substances in the past have decreased chances of being involved with violence against their partners. In the study, which was reported in the “Journal of Psychopharmacology,” the scientists note that their findings do not apply to women.

The study’s lead author, Michelle Thiessen, who also happens to be a clinical psychology graduate student from the institution’s Okanagan campus, stated that the researchers’ focus was on the link between violence and psychedelic substances. She explained that while the link between violence and substance use had been studied, studies on the association between violence and psychedelics were scarce. Thiessen added that the researchers also wanted to learn whether psychedelic substances were linked to violence in the same way that cocaine, alcohol and other substances are. She also observed that the team also wanted to delve deeper into this link to find out whether there were any possible mechanisms underlying this association.

For their study, the scientists focused on emotion regulation and conducted a survey that involved more than 1,200 individuals who had been recruited through social media and from universities. The researchers found that in comparison with men with no history of psychedelic use, those who had  consumed psilocybin mushrooms or LSD in their lifetime were less likely to perpetrate violence against an intimate partner.

In an interview, Thiessen explained that generally, classic psychedelic substances didn’t appear to carry the same risk of domestic violence associated with some other substances, which are legal, such as alcohol. Additionally, she continued, men who had consumed psychedelic substances also had less difficulty with negative emotions, which partly explained why they took part in less violence. On the other hand, those who did perpetrate intimate partner violence demonstrated larger difficulties with emotion regulation.

Thiessen noted that the study had some limitations, among them the fact that all the information used in the study was collected at one point in time, which made it possible that men who had fewer issues with negative emotions were more inclined to consume psychedelics and take part in less violence.

A lot of studies on the use of psychedelic substances in the medical setting were carried out from the ‘50s through the ‘70s. However, the banning of these substances made it harder for more research to be conducted.

The recent psychedelic renaissance has, however, prompted research on these products to begin once more, with researchers striving to learn more about these substances with great potential, for which little is currently known.

These studies highlighting the positive behavioral effects of psychedelics are likely to embolden entities such as Tryp Therapeutics Inc. (CSE: TRYP) (OTCQB: TRYPF), which is engaged in developing psychedelic medicines aimed at addressing some of the most drug-resistant mental health conditions.
