Unlike other hard drugs, hallucinogens such as LSD are seen as less likely to give rise to physical dependence and as less harmful. However, they are hardly safe, and sometimes their use is followed by unpredictable and intense psychological dependency, flashbacks and cognitive impairment.
A lot of research has been done to investigate the relationship between the use of hallucinogens and personality. However, few studies have examined traits such as emotion dysregulation, sensation and risk seeking and impulsivity, which are all taken into account when studying other hard drugs. In an attempt to fill this research gap, a group of American researchers conducted a study on these factors and their relation to hallucinogen use.
For their study, the researchers collected data from 200 adolescents and more than 10,000 college students who had been hospitalized owing to the risk of hurting others or themselves. The researchers used questionnaires to measure hallucinogen use, emotion dysregulation, impulsivity and sensation seeking, with their results calling attention to the clear differences between the adolescent and college samples as well as the importance of some personality traits for predicting hallucinogen use.
In their report, the researchers stated that college students who scored higher in experience-seeking and risk-seeking were more likely to have tried hallucinogens at a younger age. They added that apart from risk-seeking being a good predictor of continued hallucinogenic risk, some features of emotion dysregulation and negative urgency could also be used as predictors of hallucinogen use.
On the other hand, negative urgency wasn’t as important in adolescents, with various features of emotion dysregulation being much better at predicting the use of hallucinogens. The researchers found that in comparison with rates among college students, the rates of hallucinogen use were much lower in adolescents globally.
The researchers also noted that finding and understanding predictors of the use of hallucinogens was of critical clinical importance given their growing popularity among college students and their general acceptance in comparison to other hard drugs. The report highlighted that harm reduction and prevention interventions that target personality were an efficacious way to help people lower their particular risk factors.
While the research was limited by the data’s cross-sectional nature, the findings still contribute to an expanding body of scientific evidence that may be useful in alleviating the negative effects of the use of hallucinogens among individuals who choose to indulge. This is in addition to offering a framework for early intervention, especially in adolescents who are at risk.
