Third City in California Wants Psychedelics Decriminalized

July 13, 2021 14:50:13

Yet another city in California is taking steps to pass a resolution aimed at decriminalizing psychedelics. This comes after a council member from Arcata City, California, agreed to spearhead the reform effort.

Last week Decriminalize Nature Humboldt revealed that Sarah Schaefer, a councilmember, had accepted the lead in championing a resolution as it makes its way through the council. Schaefer agreed to support the resolution until there is a policy change that makes the enforcement of laws against entheogenic substances, such as ibogaine and psilocybin mushrooms, the lowest priority for law enforcement agencies. In addition, the group announced that during next month, it will be discussing this important measure with different city lawmakers in order to galvanize support for the initiative.

In a press release, Schaefer stated that the resolution was consistent with what many Arcatans believed and that by decriminalizing these fungi and plants, the city would take a big step towards dismantling the failed drug war. The move would also make it possible for researchers to study the potential therapeutic benefits of those substances, she added.

Taylor Albanmonti, a member of the Humboldt chapter of Decriminalize Nature, explained that psychedelic fungi and plants provide a pathway through which individuals afflicted by treatment resistant psychiatric conditions can find healing. He adds that the right of everyone to nurture a relationship with the sacred plants mentioned in the resolution shouldn’t be curtailed, and that equitable access to these medicines shouldn’t be blocked by draconian laws.

If this resolution is approved, Arcata will follow in the footsteps of Santa Cruz and Oakland, which both passed similar resolutions in the recent past.

Meanwhile, a bill to legalize some psychedelics is making its way through the state legislature as well. That bill was approved by the state Senate and is now weaving through different committees of the Assembly in California.

In similar action across the country, the movement to enact psychedelic policy reform has seen a trio of Massachusetts cities —  Somerville, Cambridge and Northampton — decriminalize psychedelic substances. Attempts are also underway to decriminalize psychedelics as well as other drugs that are currently outlawed. For example, Texas recently passed a bill requiring the state to conduct studies aimed at establishing whether psychedelics can be therapeutically beneficial to military veterans.

Further evidence of the psychedelics reform movement’s success are the research centers established at leading academic institutions, including  Johns Hopkins University. Harvard Law School has also established a psychedelics policy research center, a first in the country.

The work of these academic institutions and jurisdictions changing their psychedelics laws is likely to spread awareness about the potential remedies that companies such as XPhyto Therapeutics Corp. (CSE: XPHY) (OTCQB: XPHYF) (FSE: 4XT) are working to develop.
