Voters in Detroit Pass Initiative to Decriminalize Psychedelic Substances

November 11, 2021 12:05:32

Voters in the city of Detroit have passed a ballot measure that will decriminalize psychedelic substances. Detroit is the latest city to enact the reform in the country. Unofficial results released last week showed that the initiative led by a 61% margin, with all precincts reporting their data.

The measure stipulates that the city will decriminalize the therapeutic use and personal possession of entheogenic plants by individuals aged 18 and above, as permitted under the law in the state of Michigan. This is in addition to making the therapeutic use and personal possession of entheogenic plants the lowest law-enforcement priority in the city.

In the last few months, the state of Michigan has become a hot spot for psychedelic reform, with the city council of Ann Arbor recently making the enforcement of laws prohibiting the use of psychedelic substances, such as DMT, ayahuasca and psilocybin, the lowest priorities for law enforcement in the city. Legislators in the city also made September the Entheogenic Fungi and Plants Awareness month. The city council of Grand Rapids also approved a measure to decriminalize various psychedelic substances in September.

Advocates for psychedelics reform in other parts of the country are also calling for reform, with legislators in the city of Easthampton voting on a measure to decriminalize entheogenic substances and other drugs.

This comes a few months after the city council of Northampton approved a measure stipulating that no police or government funds should be utilized in the enforcement of laws that criminalize individuals for being in possession of or using entheogenic fungi and plants.

Cambridge and Somerville, also in the state of Massachusetts, have enacted reforms to decriminalize psychedelic substances. Additionally, the city council of Seattle passed an initiative in October that would decriminalize non-commercial activity around an extensive range of psychedelics, including the growing and sharing of non–peyote-derived mescaline, ibogaine, ayahuasca and psilocybin mushrooms.

In California, a measure to legalize psychedelic substances that had advanced through two Assembly committees and the Senate was pulled by Sen. Scott Wiener. Wiener, who is the measure’s sponsor, explained that this would give the measure more time to generate support among legislators. Activists in the state have also started to gather signatures for a measure to legalize hallucinogenic mushrooms in the state, having received clearance to proceed.

Last year, voters in the state of Oregon approved two measures that would decriminalize the possession of all drugs and legalize psilocybin therapy.

Given how much progress companies such as Tryp Therapeutics Inc. (CSE: TRYP) (OTCQB: TRYPF) are making it their quest to develop novel treatments derived from psychedelic compounds, the exploding movement calling for psychedelic policy reform becomes understandable.
