Decisive Actions the Biden Administration Plans to Take to Combat Addiction and the Overdose Crisis

March 11, 2022 12:50:30

The numbers of individuals succumbing to drug overdoses has increased significantly these last few years, which has left many communities and families devastated. Figures show that between September 2020 and September 2021, more than 104,000 individuals in America died due to drug overdoses. President Joseph Biden recently revealed the actions that his administration would take to address this epidemic caused by addiction, laying out a vision for how the administration would expand harm reduction, evidence-based prevention, supply reduction, recovery and treatment approaches in an attempt to save lives.

These decisive actions include:

Putting an end to illicit drug trafficking

Cross-border organized crime is a billion-dollar enterprise that threatens stability, affecting millions of individuals through addiction and drug overdoses, smuggling, human trafficking, firearm deaths and violence.

The administration plans to counteract this by expanding the federal government’s ability to target organized crime organizations as well as their financial facilitators and enablers. The Council on Transnational Organized Crime was also established in the United States to deal with these criminal activities.

Saving lives through harm reduction

The Biden administration is focused on building trust with individuals who use drugs in an effort to offer care and save lives. It is doing so by making harm-reduction services, including syringe service programs, fentanyl test strips and naloxone, a policy priority. The administration has also allocated funds for harm reduction and is working with communities and states to elevate harm-reduction best practices.

Removing treatment barriers

The president recently called for universal access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder by 2025, as most individuals who need treatment for opioid use disorders, including methadone and buprenorphine, can’t access it.

The administration has also lifted the moratorium on mobile vehicles that offer methadone and provided support to states that would like to buy these vehicles. In addition, the White House plans to set up hospital recommendations for care coordination and overdose care because emergency departments provide a unique setting to begin treatment.

Increase public health funding

Most Americans find it hard to obtain treatment for illicit drug use. However, the Biden administration plans to invest almost $11 billion in health department funding for research that will help to better meet the needs of individuals who have a heightened risk of developing substance use disorders or overdosing on drugs.

The administration also has plans to allocate funding for decreasing illicit drug availability in the U.S. and bolster efforts to stop illicit drug trafficking at the borders.

While the federal government is laying out its plans on what it intends to do to combat the drug overdose crisis and addiction, companies such as Mydecine Innovations Group Inc. (NEO: MYCO) (OTC: MYCOF) have taken matters into their own hands and are hard at work developing novel treatments for addiction from psychedelic compounds that have shown promise in this regard.
