David A. Edwards, a professor of Biomedical Engineering at Harvard, is set to launch a new product that he developed, this fall. He claims that the product reduces almost 100% of particles that are present in exhaled air. This will help reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 both out of and into the lungs while breathing. This would mean that the risk of contracting COVID-19 would significantly decrease, especially for frontline workers, when it is used in combination with other Personal Protective Equipment like face masks.
The product is known as FEND and has been produced by Sensory Cloud, a tech startup owned by Edwards. FEND is a calcium chloride-based solution, almost like a saline spray and it contains no drugs, so no FDA approval is needed. Peer-reviewed research that was published in QRB Discovery by Sensory Cloud showed that the solution, when inhaled in mist form, cleaned the upper human airways of minute particles that aren’t usually filtered out by many of the face masks we wear these days.
The company conducted the research using a small sample of 10 volunteers. Five of the volunteers were above 65 and the other 5 were below 65. The researchers discovered that in the sample group, FEND reduced the transmitted particles in the air by about 99%. Most of the particles that were blocked were the ones that were too small to be filtered using the conventional face masks.
Sensory Cloud claims that FEND could provide additional protection to any individual who is at risk of SARS-CoV-2 by preventing the ejection of viral particles for those who may have it, and cleaning the airways of inhaled particles for those who do not have the virus.
Sensory Cloud plans on launching the product to the general public through online sales on its platform. Additionally, the company is planning to facilitate access to the product by at-risk populations like frontline workers around the globe.
FEND will be priced at $49 for a 2-pack, with refill bottles going at $6 per bottle afterward. A single refill provides about 250 uses. Based on the research done, each use provides the cleaning benefits that are described above for up to 6 hours.
However, this does not mean that you should stop putting on a mask. FEND is an additional product that you can use with other PPE. It will not only be protecting you but also those around you. So, quit complaining and put on a mask when you leave your house. Yes, that applies to going for quick grocery runs too!
