Nine Ways to Manage Stress

September 21, 2021 09:35:49

If you’ve been feeling stressed, identifying the cause of the stress and addressing it may help you feel better. University of Lancaster occupational health expert Gary Cooper says that turning to something unhealthy such as drinking or smoking will not help manage stress. However, adopting a positive outlook, remaining in control of your situation and building emotional strength might. Below are a few ways one can use to manage stress.

  • Being positive

Focus on the positive things in life and the things you are grateful for. You can do this by writing down three things that you’re grateful for or things that went well, at the end of each day.

  • Don’t work harder, work smarter

Prioritize your work and focus on the tasks that make a real difference. This approach will ensure that you don’t suffer from stress caused by work pressure or burnout.

  • Help others

Evidence has shown that individuals who help others through activities such as community work or volunteering are more resilient. Helping individuals who may be in situations that are worse than yours may also help put your challenges into perspective.

  • Avoid unhealthy habits

Do not rely on caffeine, smoking or alcohol to cope with stress. Cooper states that in comparison with women, men are more likely to engage in this avoidant behavior. While these habits may offer temporary relief, they won’t solve any issues in the long term. They may instead end up creating new ones.

  • Challenge oneself

Setting new goals for oneself, such as learning a new sport or new language, may help an individual deal with stress. Cooper notes that learning something helps build an individual’s confidence and allows them to become more emotionally resilient. In addition to this, it keeps a person from remaining passive and arms them with knowledge.

  • Make time for yourself

Take some time to exercise, relax or socialize. Cooper recommends taking a few nights every week on your own.

  • Connect with others

Having a good support network of family, friends and colleagues can enable an individual to view things from a different perspective and help ease one’s troubles. Talking things through with friends may also help find solutions to one’s problems.

  • Take control

Taking control is empowering and will help you find a solution to your problems that satisfies you. It should be noted though that changing a difficult situation isn’t always possible. In a scenario like this, individuals may benefit from focusing on the things they have control over.

  • Be active

While exercising will not magically melt away your stress, it can help decrease your emotional intensity and enable you to deal with problems in a manner that is more calm.

When stress becomes chronic, you may need to see a professional. A number of companies, including Mind Cure Health Inc. (CSE: MCUR) (OTCQB: MCURF), are also developing a new class of therapeutics aimed at giving patients with mental disorders better treatment outcomes.
