Seven Symptoms of Brain Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore

September 30, 2021 12:27:08

An individual’s lifetime risk of developing a spinal cord or malignant brain tumor is under 1%. The American Cancer Society reveals that even when primary brain tumors do occur, more than half of them are benign, which means that they are not cancerous.

Dr. Alyx B. Porter, a neuro-oncologist who is also the medical director of the Mayo Clinic Outpatient Practice in Arizona, states that the main known risk factors for brain tumors are a family history with genetic predisposition to some cancers or tumors and being exposed to radiation.

Below are the most common symptoms of a brain tumor, which you should never ignore.

Seizures

Porter explains that seizures are the most common symptom of brain tumors and notes that if you don’t have a known disorder that causes seizures yet you experience them, you should definitely talk with your physician.

Issues with vision

If you’ve noticed issues with your peripheral vision, have double vision or things look all blurry all of a sudden, check things out because these can be signs of a brain tumor.

Difficulty with expression or language comprehension

If you’ve suddenly began to have trouble expressing your thoughts or understanding what others are saying, you should talk to your doctor as this may be an indication of the presence of a brain tumor. The American Brain Tumor Association notes that this change in cognitive function may also present as difficulty in writing or reading.

Headaches

Headaches are common and may be caused by many different factors, so if you have headaches, that shouldn’t be a primary concern. However, if you’ve been getting headaches more frequently or if the headache isn’t responding to medications — or if it’s the worst headache you’ve had — you should see your doctor as this may indicate the presence of a brain tumor.

Numbness or weakness in limbs

Another potential brain tumor symptom is a strange sensation in your limbs. If you feel weakness in a limb or have been experiencing a gradual loss of mobility or sensation in a limb over a period of time, you should make a point to visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Sudden changes in personality

If you’ve suddenly become sluggish or aggressive, you may be displaying symptoms of a brain tumor.

Confusion or fuzziness

If you’ve been having trouble focusing on daily activities or are having difficulties remembering things, there’s a possibility that this could be a symptom of a brain tumor. However, you should keep in mind that fuzziness can also be a symptom of menopause, lack of sleep and stress. In addition, you may also observe sudden changes in balance. Porter notes that confusion and sudden changes in personality are rare symptoms of brain tumors.

Several clinical and preclinical studies are currently ongoing, and companies such as CNS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: CNSP) could soon have some drug candidates up for consideration by regulators for use in treating cancers affecting the brain.
