CBD Could Help People Living With Tinnitus

August 29, 2019 15:00:18

Approximately 50 million Americans suffer from tinnitus, the perception of a ringing sound in their ears. The primary cause of this condition is the process of aging, but other factors, such as neck and head injuries, acoustic shock and vascular diseases, can also trigger it. Tinnitus causes extreme anxiety and other related symptoms like insomnia in many people who suffer from this condition, but conventional medicine doesn’t seem to have an effective solution to help people cope with this condition. A solution may now be at hand if the research being done by Tyson Ranch, the cannabis company of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, produces positive results regarding the use of CBD to treat brain injuries and the symptoms, such as insomnia and anxiety that come with those brain injuries.

Tyson Ranch is supporting research into the use of cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, to treat sports-related injuries that include chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

While that research doesn’t directly focus on tinnitus, its findings will shed some light on how tinnitus sufferers can be helped to live with this condition. This is according to Dr. Dennis Colucci, a forensic audiologist based in Lacuna Hills.

Dr. Colucci is an executive at Tyson Ranch. He says that the medications which are currently given to patients with tinnitus aren’t effective, are addictive and have other negative side effects which make them a less than desirable way to manage tinnitus.

The audiologist believes that the high safety profile of CBD makes this cannabinoid an ideal alternative to the existing pharmaceuticals being given to tinnitus patients. While CBD isn’t expected to treat tinnitus (and no current pharmaceutical claims to treat the condition), the compound can help the patients to deal with the additional problems that come with the condition, such as sleeplessness and anxiety.

The reality for many tinnitus sufferers is that they constantly worry about the condition and whether it will get worse or prevent them from functioning normally. This preoccupation triggers high levels of anxiety and this in turn results in insomnia and other mental health problems.

This is where CBD can help. The compound has for long been used to deal with anxiety, and Dr. Colucci thinks that this effect of CBD can help tinnitus sufferers to relax and avoid dwelling so much on a problem (tinnitus) that they cannot cure.

Colucci admits that there is little scientific research to back his (and Mike Tyson’s) hopes in this direction, but he strongly believes that the ongoing research will open the door to the use of CBD to treat or manage autoimmune and neurological disorders.

It is widely expected that industry participants like VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) and Wildflower Brands Inc. (CSE: SUN) (OTCQB: WLDFF) will be glad to know the outcome of the CTE research that Mike Tyson’s company is involved in.
