City of Reno Unveils First City-Operated Blockchain Platform

June 6, 2022 11:50:00

The City of Reno in Nevada has made history as the first city in the United States to create and run a blockchain platform focused on addressing the needs of the residents. That platform has been dubbed the Biggest Little Blockchain.

Speaking at an event to unveil the platform, Reno mayor Hillary Schieve revealed that she was excited because this technology showcases how useful blockchain technology can be for the residents of Reno. She added that the residents deserved accountability and transparency from their leaders, and this project gives the residents an opportunity to access information easily.

The platform, which was designed by BlockApps, will initially provide a record of all the historic buildings in the city as defined by the register created in 1993 to document all those buildings and preserve them as a vital part of Reno’s history. The blockchain platform will not only list those historical buildings but also document any modifications, renovations and other such works done to those buildings. The platform will become available to the public in the summer.

In contrast to other platforms on the blockchain, such as Bitcoin, the platform built for Reno City doesn’t have a function of altering the information added to the system. With Bitcoin, for example, the ownership of a given asset or part of that asset can change hands and those changes are captured by the system. With Reno’s platform, the data entered cannot be altered. Instead, more data, such as information on subsequent maintenance work, can be added onto the existing ledger of a specific building listed on the platform.

The smart logic or contracts built into the design of the platform ensure that every transaction captured on any ledger meets all the conditions set for such a transaction to occur. For example, any remodel that changes the historic character of a building will not be approved by the blockchain platform of the city.

Any landlord or developer interested in altering a historic building in Reno is by law required to apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness (CofA). With the blockchain platform now in operation, such CoAs will be recorded on the system, and any interested city resident can access this information quickly without having to navigate any red tape or waste time waiting for the appropriate city authority to respond to their request for information.

BlockApps prides itself in using a core blockchain platform that doesn’t use as much energy as the other blockchain systems on the market. Part of the reason for this is that the data on the platform cannot be altered, and since they don’t run a cryptocurrency, there is no need to conduct energy-intensive mining activities.

As more governments adopt blockchain technologies, the sector will get more players, such as BlockQuarry Corp. (OTC: BLQC), which are interested in designing blockchains for various agencies and departments in different sectors.
