For decades, cannabis has been aggressively prohibited, and tons of people have had their records permanently stained by marijuana possession charges. However, over the past few years, attitudes towards marijuana have changed, with plenty of territories legalizing it in various forms.
And according to a new study by Gallup, majority of Americans do not find marijuana consumption more immoral than most divisive issues. Released to the public on Tuesday, the poll found that Americans consider marijuana consumption more morally acceptable than gay relationships, medical testing of animals, the death penalty and abortion.
The poll represents current attitudes towards marijuana, as people become more accepting of cannabis and plenty of states legalize the controversial plant. Seven out of ten of all the respondents polled said using marijuana is morally acceptable, with only 28% stating that consuming marijuana is morally unacceptable.
“At least seven in 10 U.S. adults say birth control, drinking alcohol, getting a divorce, sex between an unmarried man and woman, gambling, and smoking marijuana are acceptable moral behaviors,” Gallup announced on Twitter. That’s an impressive increase from the 65% of those surveyed by Gallup last year who said that cannabis consumption is morally acceptable.
Some activities that Americans found less morally acceptable than smoking marijuana include sex between teenagers (38%), wearing clothes made from animal furs (54%), human cloning (12%) and pornography (38%). Gallup’s recent survey has shown what previous surveys have found: there’s a major divide among Americans with differing political ideologies.
People who identify as liberal were far more likely to view marijuana consumption as morally acceptable (83%), while 51% of those who identify as conservative didn’t find anything wrong with smoking marijuana. Last year’s poll by Gallup found that 66% of the respondents supported ending marijuana prohibition. 51% of those who supported legalization were self-reported Republicans and 76% were Democrats.
Gallup’s summary of the 2019 survey is applicable to this year’s poll; “Most Americans do not object on moral grounds to people drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana. Of the two, they are more likely to see drinking alcohol as an acceptable behavior, perhaps because it is legal in all states while smoking marijuana is not. Some states have recently legalized marijuana and many others are considering doing so, perhaps removing some of the stigma associated with the drug. But with roughly two-thirds of the public saying marijuana use is morally acceptable, it seems there will not be sufficient opposition to thwart attempts to make it legal.”
It would be surprising if sector players like Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) didn’t expect these results since it has been abundantly clear that the U.S. population supports marijuana legalization.
