420 with CNW — Cannabis to Feature at 2022 Edition of California State Fair

November 19, 2021 16:25:04

The California State Fair is set to resume next year after a hiatus brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The fair has various new categories, including one for marijuana, which many believe will be pretty competitive. The state legalized the recreational use of cannabis in 2016, with its cultivators playing a crucial part in the state’s economy by generating more than $3 billion annually in licensed marijuana sales.

Competitions to determine the flavor and potency of cannabis strains will not be done through smoking but will instead be done using a high-tech and purely scientific approach. Flowers submitted for competition in the state fair will be judged through lab tests, where their THC and CBD levels will be checked. In addition to this, the terpene profiles that give marijuana its unique flavors and effects will also be tested.

CBD, or cannabidiol in full, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the marijuana plant, which can be used as an anti-inflammatory in oils, creams and ointments. On the other hand, THC is the psychoactive compound also found in the marijuana plant that induces a high when consumed.

Terpenes come in different varieties, the most common being sativa, indica and hybrid. More than a hundred combinations of these terpenes exist and bring out unique scents, flavors and sensations of relaxation or even euphoria. Terpenes are what make smoking quality cannabis enjoyable. Without terpenes, the marijuana plant that is remaining is known as hemp. Hemp is grown specifically for medicinal or industrial use and has a wide range of uses.

However, some are skeptical that using technology to judge the quality may not be the same as allowing an actual person to use their senses, experience and knowledge to determine the flower’s quality. Despite these reservations, analytics will make the playing field even as the flowers will be compared to those with similar chemical profiles and there will be no biased judgments, as tech will not be swayed by personal preferences.

Separately, a new measure sponsored by California State Senator Scott Wiener is set to advance once again in the next legislative session. The bill, which calls for the decriminalization of various psychedelic substances, including ibogaine, mescaline, DMT, LSD, MDMA, psilocin and psilocybin, had advanced to the House before it was pulled by its sponsor in order to garner more support before the next session. The measure would also remove criminal penalties for the possession of these psychedelic substances.

The industry exposure availed by the state fair is likely to boost the visibility of sector actors such as American Cannabis Partners and the industry in general.
