420 with CNW – Federal Commission Supports Expanding Psychedelics and Cannabis Research for Military Veterans

June 29, 2020 15:25:42

A federal commission that was asked to generate recommendations which will help to improve how military veterans suffering from mental health issues are treated has come to an unexpected conclusion urging the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. federal government to do everything possible to ease research into psychedelics and marijuana.

After months of meetings, the commission, named Creating Options for Veterans’ Expedited Recovery (“COVER”), released its findings in a report authored in January. Surprisingly, this report hasn’t drawn as much attention as it deserves among…

420 with CNW – Los Angeles Contemplates Overhauling Legal Cannabis System

June 29, 2020 03:25:45

Cannabis had been federally prohibited for several decades before public attitudes towards marijuana started changing in the late nighties. As drug reform advocates championed for marijuana legalization, more and more states legalized marijuana with the aim of earning tax revenue from cannabis sales, edging out the illicit market and repairing the damage done by the decades’ long war on drugs.

However, a few years after a number of state-legal cannabis programs were launched, it has emerged that they aren’t as effective as projected. Despite bringing in millions of dollars in tax revenue, states like Colorado and California have had a hard time pulling clientele from the illicit market. Similarly, Los Angeles has had such a troubling legal…

June 26, 2020 15:25:49

For decades, cannabis has been aggressively prohibited, and tons of people have had their records permanently stained by marijuana possession charges. However, over the past few years, attitudes towards marijuana have changed, with plenty of territories legalizing it in various forms.

And according to a new study by Gallup, majority of Americans do not find marijuana consumption more immoral than most divisive issues. Released to the public on Tuesday, the poll found that Americans consider marijuana consumption more morally acceptable…

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) CEO Discusses Expansion and the Road Ahead in Shareholder Letter

June 26, 2020 11:11:06

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today released a shareholder letter on behalf of its CEO, which discussed tremendous growth of its BudCars business, preparations to open a BudCars hub in Los Angeles, as well as what the company believes is a much larger opportunity ahead. “We have completed considerable analysis, the results of which point to strong returns from capital investment in both verticalizing BudCars operations and expanding to multiple new regions,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan stated in the letter, discussing the path, supported by end-demand and market positioning, which offers the potential to expand at extremely cost-effective levels in the second half of 2020. “To accomplish this, we have organized a Reg-A+ funding round targeting $6 million in capital financing. We have not yet established the precise pricing for this funding round, but we are committed to working with a top-tier investment banking partner. We have initially allowed a pricing scale with a price well above our current market pricing for SGMD shares. This is not due to any plans for a near-term reverse split. Instead, it reflects the rapid growth and strong financial performance we are currently experiencing and anticipate as we move into the second half of the year.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Industry Experts “In the Know” Featured in The Bad Crypto Podcast Episode #420, “Cannabis, Crypto & Blockchain”

June 26, 2020 10:44:57

InvestorBrandNetwork’s Communications Director, Jonathan Keim, along with PotCoin’s Community Lead, Josh In The City, and uber Lawler & Del Duca LLP Partner, Josh Lawler, recently joined The BAD Crypto Podcast in an episode titled, “Cannabis, Crypto & Blockchain.” During the episode, the guests, familiar to the industry that is “a bigger business than ever before” went “down the cannabis rabbit hole” in a “chill out, smoke if you got em and listen in aptly numbered episode #420 of The Bad Crypto Podcast.” “It’s hard to know even where to start in terms of where things intersect,” Keim said in the program, discussing the overlap between blockchain and cannabis. “Digital payment is a big one because federal banks don’t want to deal with cannabis companies. And, of course, when you have a decentralized payment infrastructure, it doesn’t really matter who’s sending it or for what reason, it just goes through. Beyond that, there’s a lot of crossover in the investment community. Both crypto and cannabis are very hot, exciting and new.”

420 with CNW – The Legal Medical Marijuana Industry in Australia Only Serves 3% of Patients, Study Finds

June 26, 2020 03:25:33

More than 50 countries around the world have legalized some form of medical cannabis while six countries have allowed the recreational use of cannabis by adults. And while these territories have made inroads into the massive global cannabis market, most people in jurisdictions with legal weed still get their supply from the illicit market. One such jurisdiction is Australia. Australia legalized medical cannabis back in 2016 when the government created a system where doctors could prescribe the substance to treat various conditions. However, a recent study has found that only 3% of Australians using medical cannabis access it through the government’s regulated program.

According to the study, which was published in the Harm Reduction Journal, the cost of legal marijuana and lack of education around the program has kept illegal dealers in business. It compared two instances of the voluntary Cannabis as Medicine Survey, the first just before medical cannabis was legalized in 2016 and the second two years later. Researchers compared data from 1,388 respondents…

420 with CNW – Why Marijuana Employee Training is Crucial to Financial Success

June 25, 2020 15:25:07

Almost every job requires some kind of training. Employees need to know the basics of what they are required to do, whether it’s managing the inventory or manning the counter. For some businesses, minimal training is required and new employees can hit the ground running. But for others like cannabis sellers, who are subject to a high degree of government regulation, more comprehensive training is required.

Let’s take the example of regulated liquor stores. Without proper training, an employee might get the business in trouble for failing to check IDs and unknowingly selling alcohol to minors or even messing up the taxes. Such errors can lead to fines, suspension or even revocation of the store’s liquor license. Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level and although plenty of states have legalized cannabis, they have different guidelines on quantity, concentration, modes…

CannabisNewsAudio – Cannabis Strategic Ventures, Inc. (NUGS) Increases Harvest Size to Meet Rising Demand Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

June 25, 2020 14:20:52

COVID-19 has devastated most businesses but created a surge in cannabis sales—a trend that’s likely to continue.

Strange bedfellows, COVID-19 and cannabis. As the pandemic wreaked havoc on the U.S. and global economies, cannabis sales rocketed higher across multiple markets in North America. California cannabis sales soared nearly 160% compared to the same day in March 2019, while sales in Washington rocketed 100% and Colorado saw a 46% increase on the same day. This surge doesn’t appear to be a flash in the pan either. An emerging leader in the U.S. cannabis marketplace, Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS) (NUGS Profile)is now on pace for over $2.7 million in quarterly sales and approximately $11 million in annualized sales, based on its strong performance in April and May. Simultaneously, the company increased its harvest size by as much as 2.5x and is now selling product at an 11% premium to industry standard. Like any industry, the real winners in the cannabis markets are tied to sales and earnings growth. Canopy Growth Corporation (NYSE: CGC) has continued to release new products for a variety of markets while attracting significant investment from the beverage sector. Cronos Group Inc. (NASDAQ: CRON) has continued to work on expanding its international reach. With a similar focus on growth, Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NYSE: ACB) has acquired another company to expand its reach from Canada into markets in the United States. Organigram Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: OGI), whose business was initially disrupted by COVID-19, has begun a phased return to work and almost immediately announced the release of new products, making the most of continuing consumer demand.

420 with CNW – US April Marijuana Sales Remain Strong Despite Coronavirus Pandemic

June 25, 2020 03:25:37

The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a massive blow to the economy, and experts say it will take years to recover to pre-pandemic levels. State governments ordered the closure of all non-essential businesses, coupled with social distancing and self-isolation to curb the spread of the virus, but these measures wreaked havoc on the economy. Several industries have been almost been brought to a standstill as the country waits for the virus to pass, resulting in millions of job losses. However, one industry that seems to be weathering the storm is cannabis.

Many states with legal cannabis programs declared the industry essential, allowing cannabis dispensaries to continue operations amid COVID-19 related shutdowns. In some states, home deliveries and curbside deliveries were also allowed to reduce contact between staff and customers. In the weeks leading up to the shutdowns, cannabis shops reported increased sales as customers stocked up for the coming weeks they would spend in self-isolation. And, as broader retail sales fell by double digits in April, cannabis sales stayed strong. According to data from BDS Analytics, some states reported…

420 with CNW – US Report Reveals Religious Discrimination Targeting Marijuana Consumers Abroad

June 24, 2020 15:25:10

The U.S. State Department has released its annual Report on International Religious Freedom, and it is clear that religious discrimination against marijuana consumers is still a problem in some countries. And like it did in past years, the State Department has refrained from mentioning that due to federal prohibition, such discrimination is present in America as well. The report covers developments that took place in 2019, and it identifies about a dozen countries and territories where cannabis policies either discriminate against marijuana consumers or where they have been reformed to respect religious freedoms.

“I’m here one more time, proudly, to talk about freedom and free societies. And while America is not a perfect nation by any means, we always strive towards that more perfect union, trying to improve. We remain the greatest nation in the history of civilization,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at a press conference…

Cannabis Sales Surge During Lock Down

June 24, 2020 08:05:24

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: COVID-19 devastated the economy but created a surge in cannabis sales, bolstering long-term trends.

As the pandemic wreaked havoc on the U.S. and global economies, cannabis sales rocketed higher across multiple markets in North America. California cannabis sales soared nearly 160% compared to the same day in March 2019, while sales in Washington climbed 100% and Colorado saw a 46% increase on the same day. This surge gives no indications as a one off and is strong reinforcement of long-term trends in the industry. After a lot of early hype, the cannabis sector is on firm ground and is posting impressive numbers. A strong performer in the sector, Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS) (NUGS Profile), is now on pace for over $2.7 million in quarterly sales and approximately $11 million in annualized sales, based on its strong performance in April and May. Simultaneously, the company increased its harvest size by as much as 2.5x and is now selling product at an 11% premium to industry standard. Powerful new deals confirm sector viability and vitality. Village Farms International Inc. (NASDAQ: VFF), one of North America’s largest vertically integrated greenhouse growersrecently launched a majority-owned joint venture for a large-scale, low-cost, high-quality cannabis production. HEXO Corp. (NYSE: HEXO), an established consumer packaged goods cannabis company, just closed a public offering for total gross proceeds of C$57,546,000. Amyris Inc. (NASDAQ: AMRS), a global science and technology leader of pure, sustainable ingredients for consumer products, just announced a major breakthrough in CBD delivery, improving efficacy of CBD by 10-40X as the carrier oil chassis for the skin care market. Tilray Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY) a global leader in cannabis research, cultivation, processing, and distribution announced a C$90.4 million registered offering. 420 with CNW – Israeli Marijuana Legalization Bills Jump First Hurdle

June 24, 2020 03:25:16

The past few years have been good for cannabis. Prohibited for decades in most territories, cannabis has seen a slew of positive legislative changes, with a number of countries legalizing the substance in various capacities. Israel has taken the first tentative steps towards legalization after the Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved two bills on Sunday that would decriminalize the possession and personal use of cannabis in the country.

Now past its first hurdle to becoming law, the legislation would decriminalize the possession of up to 50 grams of marijuana and legalize the possession and consumption of up to 15 grams by individuals above the age of 21, with the exception of those who work in security positions. It will also be prohibited to drive while using or under the influence of cannabis. Additionally, an advocacy fund will be set up to educate people in schools about the dangers of using cannabis and to prevent addictions, and all advertising restrictions

420 with CNW – Georgia Legislators Add Marijuana Decriminalization to Police Reform Bill

June 23, 2020 15:25:58

For the past few years, the US has been stuck in a state of civil unrest, with millions of Americans protesting police brutality against unarmed black folk. Triggered by the tragic murder of George Floyd by a police officer on the streets of Minneapolis, the countrywide protests have forced lawmakers to start working on policing reform legislation. In Georgia, as part of a recently filed comprehensive bill, lawmakers added a provision to decriminalize low-level marijuana possession.

It’s no secret that the decades-long War on Drugs has had a disproportionate effect on the black community. Advocates for the legalization of marijuana have repeatedly stated that legalizing cannabis is the first step in reversing the damage done to such communities. Senate Democrats introduced the Georgia Justice Bill to coincide with the reconvening of the legislative…

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Announces Plans to Expand into Cannabis Cultivation in Verticalization of BudCars Model

June 23, 2020 10:34:18

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD), together with its BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service (“BudCars”), today announced that the Company is submitting an application to the California Bureau of Cannabis Control to expand into cannabis cultivation as part of a strategic plan to partially verticalize its BudCars model, a process that management strongly believes will further increase the Company’s gross profitability over the long-term and provide a rapid potential path to branded product development. According to the update, the Company has already secured a property containing a 5,000 square-foot indoor premium cannabis cultivation facility located in very close proximity to its Sacramento BudCars hub. “BudCars is a high margin, high-growth business. But it will still benefit from verticalization,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan said in the news release. “Because we have access to our end-market consumer directly and we have cultivation expertise and a premium grow facility, an expansion into cultivation to connect the dots is a clearly advantageous move. In addition, because BudCars is a rapidly growing distribution channel, we will have a clear edge in the marketplace in terms of the capacity to establish our own branded cannabis product line.”

420 with CNW – Appeals Court Rejects California Marijuana Firms’ Tax Dispute Due to Mailing Mix-Up

June 23, 2020 03:25:42

Two California-based marijuana companies had their petition thrown out of appeals court after it was delivered to court a day late by an unapproved delivery service. Organic Cannabis Foundation and Northern California Small Business Assistants (“NCSB”) were challenging a nearly $2 million combined tax bill at the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals based in San Francisco. However, in a ruling, the judge said this should be a lesson to lawyers representing cannabis companies; the petition was thrown out for arriving at court a day late.

For years, the two firms had been trying to appeal a ruling by the IRS stating that they are subject to Section 280E which doesn’t allow tax deductions related to marijuana because it is still federally…

420 with CNW – Montana Marijuana Legalization Activists Beat the Odds and Submit Needed Voter Signatures

June 22, 2020 15:25:21

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has dealt the world a blow it will take years to recover from. The health crisis has stretched healthcare capabilities to the max, and experts say the U.S. economy is already in a recession. Drug reform initiatives have been majorly affected too, with states like New York and Missouri postponing their marijuana legalization initiatives to 2021 and beyond. Montana, however, seems to have weathered the storm after activists submitted the required voter signatures before the deadline.

The New Approach Montana campaign turned in more than 130,000 signatures to qualify two legalization initiatives for the November ballot. Although the coronavirus pandemic forced the activists to put their signature collection activities in pause, they relaunched their efforts in recent weeks and submitted their final petition on deadline day. The first initiative, a statutory measure to establish a regulated market for adults in the state, required…

COVID Spikes a Tsunami of Cannabis Sales

June 22, 2020 08:00:57

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: COVID-19 has devastated most businesses but created a surge in cannabis sales—a trend that’s likely to continue.

420 with CNW – Survey Shows Link Between Marijuana Legalization and Reduced Teen Marijuana Abuse Admissions

June 22, 2020 03:25:28

Marijuana legalization is one of the most divisive topics of the decade. While proponents swear by its medical abilities and say that taxes from cannabis sales can be used to address various social issues, those against argue that it is a gateway drug and that legalizing it will make it more accessible to children and teenagers. In fact, a survey by Gallup found that 83% of opponents to legalization believe it would make marijuana more accessible to the youth. However, a survey of cannabis use disorders carried out in Colorado and Washington found this to be wholly untrue.

The survey was led by researchers from Temple University and published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. The study concluded that after recreational marijuana was legalized, “the rate of adolescent treatment admissions for marijuana use declined significantly, with the mean rate falling nearly in half between 2009 and 2017. The decline in admissions rate was greater in Colorado and Washington compared to other states where recreational marijuana is not legal.” This is despite the fact that for more than 70% of minors…

420 with CNW – CDC Flooded with Comments on Kratom and Marijuana

June 19, 2020 15:25:27

For years, humanity’s main defense against chronic pain has been opioids. However, opioid addiction has quickly become a major issue in America with 450,000 people dying from overdoses involving prescription and illicit opioids from 1999 to 2018. On April 17, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) called on patients living with chronic and acute pain to comment on their perspectives on the benefits and harms of opioid use as well as their experiences with other non-opioid and non-pharmacological treatments for pain.

By the time the June 16 deadline had passed, the CDC had received hundreds of comments about medical marijuana and thousands of comments related to kratom, a lesser-known herb that has shown promise as a pain reliever. The CDC had stated that it is looking for input…

420 with CNW – Louisiana Governor Signs Off on Medical Cannabis Expansion Bill

June 19, 2020 03:25:02

Last week, Governor John Bel Edwards signed a bill that will allow Louisiana residents to get medical marijuana for any debilitating condition their doctors see fit. Sponsored by Rep. Larry Bagley, the medical marijuana expansion bill significantly expands beyond the 14 specific medical conditions that qualify patients for medical cannabis. As of August 1, patients will be able to purchase medical marijuana as long as they have a condition deemed by their doctor as debilitating.

Originally, the marijuana expansion bill would only have added traumatic brain injuries and concussions as qualifying conditions. However, it was amended in committee to include several other medical conditions as well as language stipulating that cannabis can be recommended…

420 with CNW – Canadian Marijuana Oil Exports Jump 500% in 2019

June 18, 2020 15:25:20

Canada has made great inroads into the nascent global cannabis industry. As public opinion slowly turns in favor of cannabis, a handful of countries, including Canada, have legalized either medical and adult-use cannabis or both. The Great White North is among the biggest exporters of medical marijuana oil in the world, and according to data from Health Canada, Canadian-produced medical marijuana oil reached more international shores than ever last year.

In 2019, cannabis oil exports were approved for export to at least 17 countries for medical and scientific purposes, but the bulk of the exports involved only a few countries. Overall, 1181 gallons of cannabis oil products were exported for medical and scientific use, and 90% went to three countries. Australia imported roughly 977 gallons of Canadian-made marijuana oil…

420 with CNW – CBD Toxicity Study Informing FDA Regulation Will Commence in July

June 18, 2020 03:25:51

Since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its extracts, the CBD industry has been steadily growing. Effective against a wide range of ailments and most importantly, devoid of cannabis’ infamous high, cannabidiol has quickly become the go-to ingredient for people who have lost faith in pharmaceuticals. However, the industry is barely regulated, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has repeatedly called for stakeholders to provide reliable scientific data, especially on the effects of long term use on the liver.

A group of CBD brands is doing just that. They have sponsored a study to determine any potential liver toxicity and the safety of CBD, and the study will be carried out by Colorado-based clinical research company ValidCare. Slated to commence this July, the clinical study, which was designed with heavy input from a branch of the FDA, is being interpreted as a critical step

420 with CNW – Four States Where Marijuana Legalization Has Been Postponed to 2021 and Beyond

June 17, 2020 15:25:27

Almost six months into the year, the U.S. is still squarely within the coronavirus’ stranglehold, and the past few weeks have seen rising levels of civil unrest in most states. The economy is in free-fall and health experts warn that the coronavirus pandemic is nowhere near over. With everything that’s going on, it’s easy to forget that Election Day is drawing closer, and a dozen states have at least one ballot initiative devoted to legalizing cannabis.

At least three states are guaranteed to have residents voting on cannabis legalization initiatives in November. However, while there are a few states where legalization in November is a near certainty, some states won’t be going green any time soon. Due to a variety…

420 with CNW – High Potency Cannabis Boosts Blood THC Level But Not Impairment, Study Finds

June 17, 2020 03:25:00

As the state-legal cannabis industry continues advancing in both scientific knowledge and market share, one thing that has become clear is that cannabis today is a lot stronger than it used to be. Studies have found that marijuana in circulation today, both legal and illegal, is up to 5 times stronger than it was in the eighties, and this has raised serious questions on the effect of more potent weed on the body. According to a study of regular cannabis users published by the University of Colorado Boulder in JAMA Psychiatry, smoking high potency marijuana concentrates doesn’t necessarily make you higher.

After studying regular cannabis users who smoke high potency marijuana concentrates and those who smoked regular weed, researchers from the university found that while it did boost THC levels in the blood to more than twice as much as smoking conventional marijuana, it did not make the subjects…

420 with CNW – Missouri Medical Marijuana Growers Face Additional Roadblock Before Planting Crops

June 16, 2020 15:25:36

At the moment, 33 states have legalized medical cannabis and 11 states plus Washington D.C. have taken things further and legalized recreational use. States with relatively successful legal marijuana programs like California and Colorado have surpassed $1 billion in cannabis tax revenue, and numerous advocates in other states are pushing for legalization. However, the industry is still immature, processes aren’t streamlined across the board and everyone from cultivators to retailers is subject to lengthy and time-consuming verification processes.

Marijuana business owners in Missouri, for instance, already face a lengthy verification process, and they say they have been caught off guard by an additional hurdle imposed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, which is in charge of overseeing the industry. There are 338 licensed medical marijuana providers, and after being verified by the state, they are now required…

June 16, 2020 12:58:11
  • Company announced its BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service racked up 58% month over month sales growth

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Announces Record BudCars Sales Growth as It Gears Up to Open First LA Hub

June 16, 2020 11:06:04

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD), together with its BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service (“BudCars”), today announced record growth in gross profits and gross profit margins for BudCars sales during the month of May (up 46% on a sequential month-over-month basis). Per the update, the Company continues to experience strong signals during the first half of June, with gross profits growing 9.9% on a week-over-week basis and believes this performance data provides a template for its per unit operational performance anticipated as it prepares for next month’s launch of its first Los Angeles hub. “As we gear up to open our first new hub in the Los Angeles regional market, we continue to see very good signs from our Sacramento hub, with the very rapid topline growth clearly translating to the bottom line as margins hold up and even improve,” Jimmy Chan, CEO of Sugarmade, stated in the news release. “As we recently reiterated, BudCars is not a delivery business comparable to GrubHub or Uber Eats. It is a top cannabis retail business with very consistent 46-52% gross margins on a wholesale inventory with very secure logistical underpinnings. This differentiation has been a source of misunderstanding, and it is critical to fully appreciating our value proposition and our strategy as a Company moving forward.”

420 with CNW – Why the Marijuana Black Market Still Persists in California

June 16, 2020 03:25:42

California is one of the best examples of just how much a state-legal marijuana program can achieve if it’s done right. The state has been at the forefront of the efforts to legalize cannabis in the U.S., with the country’s first ballot initiative to legalize marijuana taking place in California in 1972. Although the measure was unsuccessful, California was still the first state to allow medical cannabis in 1996, and recreational marijuana has been legal in the state since 2016.

The recreational program has been especially successful, generating over $1 billion in tax revenue after just two years of operation. These funds have gone towards environmental initiatives like wild-land restoration and park maintenance, childcare and anti-drug programs, and safety grants for fire departments and local police. However, despite all the good it has done, more people prefer…

420 with CNW – Nevada Governor Introduces Bill to Pardon Marijuana Convicts

June 15, 2020 15:25:24

For the past few decades, marijuana has been federally prohibited, and the infamous ‘War on Drugs’ has been responsible for tons of marijuana arrests and convictions. Even with multiple states legalizing cannabis in various capacities over the years, a large percentage of drug arrests are still marijuana-related. In 2018, four in ten arrests were marijuana-related, and around nine in ten of the arrests were for possession, not selling. One of the biggest arguments for legalizing marijuana has been to right these wrongs and ensure people with low-level marijuana convictions are not held back by their records again.

On Thursday, in an effort to undo the effects of the War on Drugs, the governor of Nevada announced a new resolution that could see thousands of Nevada residents with convictions for low-level marijuana convictions receive blanket pardons. “Today I am placing a resolution on the Board of Pardons Commissioners agenda next week to provide relief to tens of thousands of Nevadans…

420 with CNW – South Dakota to Vote on Legalizing Marijuana in November Ballot

June 15, 2020 03:25:04

The past few years have been game-changing for the cannabis industry. As attitudes towards it change and research into cannabis’ effects is carried out, more states have been legalizing it. At least 30 states have passed legislation allowing medical and recreational use within their borders, and activists in other states have been hard at work with their own marijuana legalization campaigns.

This November, voters in South Dakota will vote on whether or not to legalize both medical and recreational cannabis in the state. If they choose to legalize, South Dakota will become the first state to approve…

420 with CNW – Dutch Government Starts Recruiting Farmers to Take Part in Marijuana Experiment

June 12, 2020 15:25:19

On Tuesday, the Dutch Justice Ministry announced that growers who wished to take part in the Dutch government’s regulated marijuana experiment can sign up to apply from July 1. The project, which will see a maximum of 10 growers licensed to produce a variety of marijuana products, has been designed to remove the gray area surrounding coffee shops. Although they have permits to sell marijuana, most of them rely on an illegal circuit of suppliers as production and distribution of marijuana is prohibited.

“The government wishes to initiate an experiment involving the cultivation of cannabis for recreational use. The purpose of the experiment is to ascertain whether or not it is possible to regulate a quality-controlled supply of cannabis and to study…

420 with CNW – Pros and Cons of Different CBD Drinks

June 12, 2020 03:25:14

If you have been paying attention to the cannabis space for the past few years, you must have heard of cannabidiol or CBD, a chemical extracted from cannabis that is taking the world by storm. One of its biggest attractions is that it doesn’t create a psychoactive high, meaning users can use it for its health benefits and stay clear-headed. And it has a ton of medical benefits, with studies finding it effective against a myriad of conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, and high blood pressure.

There are plenty of ways you can consume cannabis, such as smoking cannabis flower, ingesting it through gummies and other confectioneries, and applying it topically. In fact, CBD gummies were the third most searched for food by Americans in 2018, and CBD-infused drinks are quickly emerging…

420 with CNW – Bermuda Government Seeks Public Feedback on Marijuana Legalization Bill

June 11, 2020 15:25:13

Last year, Bermudan lawmakers released a draft bill aimed at creating a legal cannabis program and asked the public to offer pertinent feedback. The draft legislation was met with criticism from the public as people felt it imposed excessive regulations, and they argued that the territory should legalize marijuana altogether for adult use. On Wednesday, the government of Bermuda released a draft bill to establish a legal marijuana market, and it is again seeking feedback from the public.

Under the proposed bill, adults 21 and older would be able to possess and purchase up to seven grams of marijuana from licensed retailers. The bill would require the creation of a Cannabis Advisory Authority, and it would be responsible for issuing licenses and regulating the market. Cultivation, retail, research, import, export, transportation, and manufacturing licenses…

June 11, 2020 08:51:43

Cannabis Global (OTC: MCTC), a cannabinoid and hemp extract science-forward company developing infusion and delivery technologies, today announced the expansion of its Project Varin research and development effort to include Cannabinol (“CBN”) under the umbrella of patent pending polymeric nanoparticle and nanofiber technologies developed for Tetrahydrocannabivarin (“THC-V”). This will be an important test of the flexibility of our manufacturing process and if successful should allow us low cost leadership over a variety of rare cannabinoids.”

420 with CNW – Research Shows Marijuana Users Not at Higher Risk of Workplace Accidents

June 11, 2020 03:25:39

For the past few years, cannabis has become more mainstream as attitudes and perceptions towards it change. Plenty of states have legalized either medical and recreational use or both, making it widely accessible. However, not everyone is on the cannabis train, and plenty of employers aren’t willing to hire staff who indulge in marijuana, either medically or to unwind.

They have been encouraged in part by several studies that have found a correlation between marijuana use and workplace accidents. The results of such studies have come into question after new research showed that marijuana users aren’t at a higher risk of workplace accidents. Titled Systemic Review of Cannabis Use and Risk of Occupational Injury,’ the study was published in the journal Substance Use and Misuse and it found that adults who consume…

420 with CNW – Why Smart Entrepreneurs Need to Consider the Marijuana Beverage Industry

June 10, 2020 15:25:01

The cannabis sector is without a doubt one of the top industries to keep an eye on. Still fairly young, the industry has proven that it can be quite profitable despite the myriad of challenges it still faces. However, despite having very encouraging projections, the industry will soon be filled with sellers who want a piece of the loot, and smart entrepreneurs will have to find new ways to stay on top.

One such area is cannabis beverages, a new and exciting sub-industry that takes all the natural benefits that cannabis brings and puts them in a bottle. Well, it’s not exactly new as people in places like India and China were using cannabis for centuries before it became so controversial, but it’s an exciting part of cannabis culture still. These days, people are looking for products that have natural ingredients, low

420 with CNW – There’s No Link Between Marijuana Use and Increased Stroke Risk, Study Finds

June 10, 2020 03:25:12

As more states legalize marijuana and its use becomes more prevalent, there have been numerous studies about its potential risks and benefits. In particular, there have been a number of conflicting results regarding marijuana use and increased stroke risk, with some studies stating that it reduces the risk while others argue that it exponentially increases the risk. According to a recent study by a team of neurologists at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, there is no link between increased stroke risk and marijuana use.

The team analyzed data from nearly 10,000 individuals and they found that cannabis use does not increase your risk of having a stroke. “Previous studies that investigated cannabis use and risk of stroke have had conflicting results, some showing a decreased risk and others showing a greatly increased risk,” says Carmela San Luis, MD, lead investigator…

420 with CNW – Why Some People May Not See Results After Consuming CBD

June 9, 2020 15:25:01

Over the past few years, cannabidiol (“CBD”) has gained the reputation of a cure all, and marketers have leaned quite heavily into it. Plenty of companies that process and sell CBD have taken to making all kinds of medical claims to attract customers. However, the truth of the matter is that a large portion of the evidence backing CBD’s medical abilities is anecdotal, and the cannabis extract definitely won’t fix all your health issues.

It has become immensely popular in recent years, with CBD gummies being the third most searched for food in 2018. What a lot of marketing campaigns fail to say is that for the most part, CBD reacts with different people in different ways, and another person’s experience with CBD will not exactly mirror your own. So why do some people fail to see tangible…

420 with CNW – Federal Financial Regulator Says Marijuana Banking is a Difficult Issue

June 9, 2020 03:25:10

Despite being federally prohibited, the state-legal marijuana industry has been growing steadily for the past few years. Things haven’t been rosy for the often controversial sector, and the fact that marijuana is illegal at the federal level has made it challenging for businesses to operate. Admittedly, the biggest hurdle that the industry has faced is lack of access to banking.

Fearing legal retaliation from the federal government, most banking institutions avoid marijuana businesses, locking them out of accessing credit or loans and forcing them to operate on a cash-only basis. There have been numerous calls from stakeholders and advocates to rectify this situation, but according to the head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”), marijuana banking…

420 with CNW – Uruguay Sends Another Huge Consignment of Marijuana to Europe

June 8, 2020 15:25:32

Last month, Uruguay-based Fotmer Life Sciences exported a large shipment of medical cannabis to Portugal. This came about six months after Fortmer shipped one metric ton of high-THC cannabis flower to the same country. The 2019 shipment of high-THC flower was believed to have been the largest ever amount of cannabis flower exported in a single shipment, but weighing in at 3,133 pounds, the May shipment takes the cake.

According to Uruguayan documents dated May 19, 2020, the declared customs value of the latest shipment was about $2 per gram, including costs, insurance and freight. Although no company has publicly taken responsibility for importing the shipments into Europe, it could spur other European importers to follow suit and turn to Portugal for high-THC cannabis. Fortmer Life Sciences has exported roughly 6,613 pounds of cannabis flower since last October, making Uruguay one…

420 with CNW – The White House is Reviewing FDA Research Guidelines on Marijuana and CBD

June 8, 2020 03:25:43

For the past year or so, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has been under mounting pressure from advocates and stakeholders to create a comprehensive regulatory plan for the growing CBD industry. Although the nascent industry is already worth millions in sales and filled with tons of sellers, it is barely regulated. Not only has this made it difficult for businesses to operate, but it has called into question the efficacy and safety of the products being sold.

Last week, the agency submitted a draft of a federal plan for marijuana and CBD research titled ‘Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Compounds: Quality Considerations for Clinical Research’ to the White House Office of Management and Budget (“OMB”). Although details on the contents of the document are sparse, an FDA spokesman indicated that it is related to the agency’s ongoing work to develop broader CBD regulations. These regulations would eventually allow for the marketing…

June 5, 2020 15:25:40

The state of Maine is being sued by local marijuana businesses for refusing to enforce a component of its marijuana laws. On Friday, the Maine Cannabis Coalition filed a lawsuit against the state, claiming that the Department of Administrative and Financial Services was in violation of state law after it failed to enforce the residency requirements included by lawmakers in the Marijuana Legalization Act.

According to the law, only Maine residents can run a recreational marijuana grow, manufacturing, or retail operation. Last month, the state announced that it would abandon the residency requirement, a move…

420 with CNW – Cannabis Businesses Hit by Vandals and Robbers During Ongoing Protests

June 5, 2020 03:25:44

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a black man, died at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Department officer, leading to nationwide protests against systemic police brutality against unarmed black men. Although the protests were peaceful at first, they became violent, leading to widespread rioting and looting over the weekend. Tons of business establishments nationwide have been affected by the looting, and marijuana businesses haven’t been spared.

Dozens of cannabis shops in Oregon, Illinois, San Francisco and California have been vandalized and according to the business owners whose businesses were hit, looting was carried out by professional criminals, and not the protesters themselves. Cannabis retailers in California which were looted include Cookies, Blum, MedMen, and Harborside, and reports indicate…

420 with CNW – Poll Shows Most Arizona Voters Support Cannabis Legalization Measure

June 4, 2020 15:25:02

Cannabis has come a long way indeed. Despite suffering federal prohibition for decades, attitudes towards the plant are changing, and more people are looking at cannabis with an open mind. At the moment, numerous states have legalized either medical or recreational marijuana, or even both, and despite the current coronavirus crisis, there are several legalization initiatives currently in the works.

According to a new poll, if marijuana activists in Arizona are able to place a legalization initiative before voters this November, it will likely pass by a wide margin. The survey described the proposed measure, the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, and asked 400 likely voters if they would support it should it be put to ballot. The legalization initiative…

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc.’s (SGMD) BudCars Achieves Record May Sales, Continues to See 10% Week-Over-Week Growth

June 4, 2020 09:54:20

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD), together with its BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service (“BudCars”), today announced record growth data for BudCars sales during the month of May. According to the update, the company posted nearly 30% sequential monthly growth over April sales and continues to see week-over-week sales growth at 10%, which suggests that BudCars will surpass $10 million in annualized sales by the month of August at its Sacramento location. “The top-line growth data has been extremely strong, and we have no reason to expect that to change. But it’s important that our shareholders understand that this is not a delivery service model,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan stated in the news release. “We aren’t simply earning a fee to deliver someone else’s inventory, and barely breaking even in the process. We are building an inventory at wholesale pricing, marking it up significantly, and pulling in very strong margins on every unit we deliver for sale.”

Experts say we may be facing up to two years of intermittent lockdowns before the coronavirus is finally eradicated, and the economy will take even longer to spring back to pre-pandemic levels. At the moment, most regions in the U.S. are still under lockdown orders, and while this has helped reduce infections, the effect it has had on the economy has been catastrophic.

The cannabis sector was one of the few industries that were deemed essential and allowed to continue operating amidst lockdown orders. However, due to federal prohibition, the industry has been operating at a stark disadvantage. The federal government released emergency relief funds to help…

420 with CNW – Reasons for Some Marijuana MSOs Thriving While Others Struggle During This Pandemic

June 3, 2020 15:25:34

2020 will without a doubt go down in history as one of the most challenging years of the century. It started with the discovery of a novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China in late 2019, and snowballed into a global health and economic crisis that we will take years to recover from. The pandemic has led to an economic downturn of immense proportions, with the U.S. suffering Great Depression-era levels of unemployment.

The crisis has hit most businesses hard, especially those in the tourism and hospitality sector. The state legal cannabis industry was declared essential by most states, allowing them to remain open during the lockdown. However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing, and quite a number of multistate marijuana operators have been unloading assets, cutting overhead costs and scraping plans for expansion.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Cannabis Global, Inc. (MCTC) Discusses Strong Solution with Expected 50%+ Cost Advantage in Production of THC-V and Other Rare Cannabinoids

June 3, 2020 10:43:28

Cannabis Global (OTC: MCTC), a cannabinoid and hemp extract science-forward company developing infusion and delivery technologies, today announced information on its Project Varin, a nearly complete research program implemented to develop novel production technologies for rare cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabivarin (“THC-V”), which is not scheduled at the federal level. According to the update, the program has produced meaningful technology breakthroughs resulting in several patent filings. The company has been able to leverage these technological developments to significantly reduce the cost of exotic cannabinoids on a per-serving basis resulting in a greater than 50% expected cost advantage. “We think we have rewritten the exotic cannabinoid cost equation via our Project Varin. The minor exotics represent a new cost challenge for the industry, and we believe we have developed a strong and defensible solution,” Arman Tabatabaei, CEO of Cannabis Global, stated in the news release. “Acquiring THC and CBD from plants within the Cannabaceae family is relatively easy as these cannabinoids are produced by nature in abundance. It is a very different issue relative to THC-V, CBN, and other exotics. With our patent pending technologies, we have been able to rewrite the cost equation for minor cannabinoids, while at the same time moving well beyond the purity possible from legacy technologies. While we are already at a 50% cost advantage to the competing technologies, most of which are still theoretical and not yet available on the market, we believe further travel down our cost curve is possible as we move into high volume manufacturing this month.”

420 with CNW – Cannabis Could Hold the Key to the US Obesity Pandemic

June 3, 2020 03:20:52

For the past decade and more, the U.S. has been up against a silent but deadly foe, obesity. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 36.5% (one third) of American adults and 17% of children were obese by 2019, and the numbers aren’t reducing any time soon. Further research has suggested that over half of the country’s population will be obese within the next ten years, with one in ten Americans being severely obese.

While there are genetic factors that will increase your chances of being obese, it is often a result of poor lifestyle choices, and it has led to a massive surge in type 2 diabetes cases. Ultimately, the best defense against these two deadly conditions is an active lifestyle coupled with a healthy diet. Fortunately, studies have found that cannabis may be a unique treatment to the obesity pandemic that’s been…

420 with CNW – Marijuana Business Losses During the Pandemic May Be Covered by Insurance

June 2, 2020 15:20:51

2020 definitely isn’t playing out how we thought it would. America started the year with record low unemployment rates but by the end of May, had lost most of the gains it had made in the past fifty years and was looking at Great Depression levels of unemployment. Small businesses have definitely been hit hard, with most of the government issued coronavirus-related measures disrupting their operations and effectively cutting off their cash flows. Although most states with legal cannabis deemed the industry essential, cannabis establishments haven’t been spared from losses.

The federal government issued disaster relief funds to be dispersed to small businesses through the Small Business Administration but due to federal prohibition, cannabis businesses have been denied access to these funds. However, this doesn’t mean you just have to grin and bear it. Insurance may be a way to reduce the financial trauma your business is currently experiencing. Business interruption insurance, for instance, covers losses from direct interruption to the insured’s operations due natural disasters or fire, and the insurer makes…

420 with CNW – Veterans and Scientists Sue DEA for Blocking Marijuana Rescheduling

June 2, 2020 04:20:49

According to a new lawsuit against the Drug Enforcement Administration [DEA], the agency is relying on scheduling standards that are arbitrary and misinterpret federal law to classify marijuana. The latest of many marijuana related lawsuits against the DEA, it has called into question the agency’s denial of prior cannabis rescheduling requests. The suit was filed in the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals by the Scottsdale Research Institute [SRI].

The institute requested a review of the DEA’s scheduling determinations in 2020, 2016 and 1992 when the agency denied the petitions citing statutory obligations to maintain the status of cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. The petitioners also requested a review of the agency’s claims that marijuana must be strictly scheduled because according to the government, it currently has no acceptable medical value and has not been proven safe. Additionally, they argue that another statutory policy which the DEA says necessitates marijuana being strictly…

420 with CNW – Study Shows Ancient Israelites Burned Marijuana During Worship

June 1, 2020 16:20:48

Cannabis enthusiasts will probably tell you that despite being prohibited and carrying a negative stereotype in many territories, cannabis has been used by folks for a very long time. Well, such advocates will be happy to learn that archaeologists have found evidence that proves their theory of cannabis use among ancient people. In a 2,700 year old temple in Tel Arad, researchers found a well preserved substance that has been identified as cannabis and its main psychoactive agent, THC.

The Biblical-era temple from the Kingdom of Judah was first discovered in the Negev desert, about 59 miles south of Tel Aviv and was excavated by Israeli architects between 1962 and 1967. According to the study published in ‘Tel Aviv,’ the academic journal of Tel Aviv University’s Institute of Archaeology, two limestone altars had been buried within the temple. Researchers found clumps of biological material on the altars but due to limited technology at the time, the material could not…

420 with CNW – US Supreme Court Declines to Hear Ohio Marijuana Decriminalization Case

June 1, 2020 04:20:26

A campaign to decriminalize marijuana in Ohio has been dealt a major blow after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case challenging local Ohio officials’ refusal to place decriminalization initiatives on municipal ballots on Tuesday. Back in 2018, activists submitted ballot initiatives to legalize marijuana in Garrettsville and Windham, but the Portage County Board of Elections determined that the initiatives could not appear before the voters.

The board argued that since the proposals constituted administrative rather than legislative issues, they were not appropriate for the ballot process. This led to a two year legal battle between cannabis reform activists and the Portage County Board of Elections, culminating in…

420 with CNW – Are Hemp Masks the Answer to Sustainable Personal Protection Amid this Pandemic?

May 29, 2020 16:20:25

The novel coronavirus first appeared late last year in Wuhan, China, and in a little over five months, has brought the entire globe to its knees. With more than 5.5 million confirmed infections and at least 350,000 lives lost, the virus has thrown the world into disarray, with most governments issuing lockdown and stay at home orders to curb its spread.

Unfortunately, experts say we may be stuck dealing with the pandemic for up to two years and that even with a vaccine, it may never go away. The pandemic has placed a massive strain on supply chains, leading to shortages, especially in personal protective equipment such as masks. And since all kinds of essential workers, from nurses and doctors to grocery store clerks and delivery drivers absolutely need masks to avoid infection, this is an issue that needs…

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade Inc. (SGMD) Featured in Global Small Cap Research Report

May 29, 2020 11:18:17

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) was recently the subject of a report conducted by Global Small Cap Research (http://cnw.fm/W1a82). An article discussing the report reads, “Outlining what it called a ‘near-perfect business world’ for cannabis delivery operators, the report made a strong case by observing that ‘Sugamade is enjoying participation in a rapidly growing market. . . . Few if any, marketplaces are growing faster than cannabis — and the California market is the epicenter of growth.’ The report stated that during 2019, the cannabis market produced approximately $100 billion in U.S sales, with growth projected to top 32% compounded annually over the next few years. . . . In addition, the reported noted that a general trend for home-delivery service, a favorable labor environment, the advantages of being publicly traded and a disrupted industry that has become even more shattered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic all combine to create a ‘positive outlook for Sugarmade for the rest of 2020 and into next year. At a time when so many businesses are struggling, we believe companies involved in certain areas of the cannabis marketplace, such as delivery services, are not only surviving, but thriving,’ the report concluded.”

420 with CNW – Oklahoma Could Soon Pioneer Marijuana Breathalyzer Use

May 29, 2020 04:20:40

In the coming months, Oklahoma may be pioneering a pilot program that will greatly influence how driving laws are enforced in regard to cannabis use. The state is currently working on the implementation of a program to conduct marijuana breathalyzer tests which will allow the police to accurately determine who’s driving while high. Last week, Oklahoma’s legislature passed legislation requiring the Department of Public Safety to dedicate $300,000 to pay for the marijuana breathalyzer test kits. The agency will be tasked with coming up with new rules and regulations for the pilot program.

One issue that has stood in the way of legalization is the fact that there is no accurate test to see how much fresh cannabis is in someone’s system, denying law enforcement the ability to weed out who’s driving while high from those who smoked days ago. At the moment, law enforcement can only test for cannabis by testing urine, blood or hair, but unfortunately, cannabis smoked days before will still be present in your system, making it difficult to…

420 with CNW – Argentina Legalized and Gives Away Free Medical Marijuana

May 28, 2020 16:20:39

Cannabis has been prohibited for decades, but in the past few years, attitudes have started shifting. The U.S. has been one of the pioneer countries, with numerous states allowing either recreational use, medical use or both, and generating billions of dollars in sales. Canada hasn’t done so bad either, with the world’s largest cannabis company, Canopy Growth situated in Smith Falls, Ontario. However, one country that seems to have made quite progressive marijuana reforms while staying relatively under the radar is Argentina.

In 2009, the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling, the Arriola decision, declaring that personal use of small amounts of marijuana was legal. It was based on a case involving five people who were arrested for possessing small amounts of cannabis, and the court determined that as long as it is meant for personal use only, cannot affect or hurt anyone else and does not pose any harm or danger, small amounts of cannabis are not illegal. As the court stated, “each adult is free to make lifestyle decisions without the intervention of the state,” and in the meantime, the time and resources that would have been…

420 with CNW – Long Lines as Recreational Pot Shops Reopen in Massachusetts

May 28, 2020 04:20:49

When governments issued lockdown and social distancing orders to curb the spread of the coronavirus, most states with legal marijuana programs deemed cannabis an essential service, allowing both recreational pot shops and medical marijuana dispensaries to continue operating. In Massachusetts, however, only medical marijuana shops were deemed essential, forcing residents who wanted to indulge in recreational pot during the lockdown to turn elsewhere. With the state slowly reopening, recreational marijuana retailers have been allowed to reopen since they were forced to shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With customers now able to order in advance and pick up their purchases outside, some recreational pot shops in Massachusetts have seen some pretty long lines. During the lockdown, medical marijuana establishments were granted extra permissions like online ordering and curbside pickups to keep the staff and customers safe, and they have finally been extended to recreational marijuana shops. In response, customers have showed up in droves, with shops like Solar Therapeutics and Pure Bliss, the first pot shop to open in Boston, seeing dozens of customers lined up on…

420 with CNW – Jamaica Allows Online Medical Cannabis Purchases as COVID-19 Fight Intensifies

May 27, 2020 16:20:48

The coronavirus pandemic has shown just how essential the cannabis industry is, with numerous territories allowing medical and recreational pot shops to continue operating during the lockdown and granting them certain permissions to keep transactions between staff and employees smooth and safe. The Jamaican government, for instance, recently announced that it will be allowing medical marijuana patients to make cannabis purchases online for pickup at ‘herb houses’ to maintain social distancing and help combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The interim rule change was made by the country’s Cannabis Licensing Authority [CLA] in coordination with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries and announced last week. They are designed to keep pot shops, or ‘herb houses’ open for businesses while minimizing the public’s exposure to the coronavirus. Under the new rules, patients who have already registered with a cannabis dispensary will be able to order products from…

420 with CNW – Utah Treasurer and AG Back Cashless Marijuana Transactions

May 27, 2020 04:20:31

Federal prohibition has been a massive thorn in the state legal marijuana industry’s side for years, and the coronavirus pandemic has made this abundantly clear. Despite cannabis being declared an essential service by most states with legal cannabis programs, businesses in the sector have been subject to federal restrictions that have made it nearly impossible to operate safely in these trying times. Aside from being denied access to relief funds dispensed by the federal government, marijuana businesses do not have access to the banking system, forcing them to operate on a cash only basis.

This not only puts them at risk of theft and crime, but it also puts staff, customers and anyone who comes into contact with the money at risk of being infected by the coronavirus. For months, advocates have implored lawmakers to correct this and grant cannabis-related businesses access to the banking system. Utah seems to be headed in that direction after state Attorney General Sean Reyes and Treasurer David Damschen called on Congress to pass a bill allowing marijuana-related businesses to access…

420 with CNW – Italian Supreme Court Confirms Personal Marijuana Cultivation is Legal

May 26, 2020 16:20:30

In a landmark decision that triggered anger from the country’s conservatives and calls for further legalization from cannabis advocates, Italy’s Supreme Court has ruled that small scale domestic cannabis cultivation is legal. On December 19, the Court of Cassation was called on by the Supreme Court to give a clear interpretation of the Consolidated Law, the legal framework for dealing with drugs in the country. However, its interpretation of the law, stating that personal cultivation of small amounts of cannabis is legal, went under the radar until after Christmas.

Since 2014, Italy’s law has provided a distinction between softer and harder drugs, with personal possession of softer drugs, like cannabis, incurring a penalty of 1-3 months administrative punishment and harder drugs incurring a penalty of 2-12 months. The Consolidated Law of 1990 made the cultivation and sale of marijuana illegal, and it is punishable under the same system of hard and soft drugs. Over the years, however, different legal cases handled through the system generated…

420 with CNW – Illinois Unveils $31 Million Program to Address Harms of Marijuana Prohibition

May 26, 2020 04:20:01

For a long time, the federal government has outlawed cannabis, and it is no question that certain communities have suffered most from its decades’ long law war on marijuana. Aside from creating new job opportunities and producing tax revenue from sales, advocates for legalizing marijuana have argued that legalizing it would be the first step in stopping this unfair persecution. Indeed, several states that have legalized cannabis within their borders have directed substantial funds towards repairing the damage the war on drugs has had on certain communities.

Illinois, for instance, has had a very lucrative legal cannabis scene, and a large percentage of the funds received from cannabis sales tax has been channeled towards good causes. On Tuesday, for instance, the state announced that $31.5 million derived from cannabis sales tax has been made available in restorative justice grants. Last year, Governor J.B Pritzker signed a legalization bill that established a Restore, Reinvest, and Renew [R3] program which was created to provide grant opportunities for ‘communities impacted by economic disinvestment, violence and the severe multilayered harm caused by…

420 with CNW – How Tech Can Keep Marijuana Afloat During the Pandemic

May 22, 2020 16:20:00

A little over four months after the coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China, it has infected at least 5 million individuals, claimed over 300,000 lives and brought the world economy to a standstill. As the world takes steps to curb the spread of the virus, technology has proven crucial, allowing governments and businesses to keep operating from home and helping workers and customers stay safe. And as experts say we may be grappling with the coronavirus for at least two more years, the role of technology in our daily lives is even more important.

Cannabis was lucky enough to be declared an essential service by most state governments, and businesses were allowed to implement extra measures to keep the staff and customers safe during transactions, such as online bookings, curbside pickups and home deliveries. All these tech-dependent measures are now an integral part of most cannabis businesses’ operations, and they may be moving forward. But that isn’t the only way technology can help…

420 with CNW – D.C. Mayor Seems to be Setting the Stage for Marijuana Sales

May 22, 2020 04:20:24

On May 17, the mayor of Washington D.C. released a budget plan for the 2021 fiscal year, and it may have positive implications for the city’s medical marijuana program. Based on language included in the plan, it looks like the local government is preparing to implement regulations for medical marijuana sales as soon as Congress Okays it. Although low level possession and home cultivation has been legal for adults over 21 since a ballot measure was passed in 2014, the local government has been unable to add a legal sales component due to Congressional interference.

In the budget plan for the 2021 fiscal year, Mayor Muriel Bowser proposes to shift regulators’ and licensing responsibilities for Washington City’s current medical marijuana program from the Department of Health to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration [ABRA]. In addition, the budget also calls for the ‘establishment of a non-lapsing Medical Cannabis Administration to collect funds received from medical cannabis licensing, permitting and regulating fees. According to a fiscal impact statement, the mayor’s plan would transfer $360,000 in local funds, $600,000 in special purpose revenue and six full time…

420 with CNW – Oregon Breaks Yet Another Monthly Marijuana Sales Record

May 21, 2020 16:20:23

The economic impacts of the coronavirus crisis will undoubtedly be felt for years. With more than 30 million Americans newly unemployed and all but the most essential businesses shut down in the meantime, most industries are in a downturn. One sector that was spared and almost seems to be thriving during the crisis is the cannabis sector.

For years, one of the main arguments for legalizing marijuana has been the tax revenue states stand to earn from sales. With the coronavirus pandemic tearing across the country and most public coffers stretched thin, such revenue would be a godsend. Oregon, for instance, has had a very lucrative legal cannabis industry this year. In March, adult-use and medical marijuana stores in the state sold…

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade Inc.’s (SGMD) BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service Expands into LA Area

May 21, 2020 11:56:31

Sugarmade’s (OTCQB: SGMD) recently acquired BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service announced on April 16 that it was expanding into the Southern California marketplace (http://cnw.fm/9n3mD). An article discussing the company reads, “‘Our Sacramento locations will pass the $10 million mark for annualized sales within the next 60 to 90 days,’ Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan stated in a news release. ‘The growth has been so dramatic that we have had to drastically revise our expectations to the upside, which demands expansion, both in terms of staff and fleet in Sacramento, and in terms of regional expansion into Southern California. As a result, we are acquiring two distribution hub locations in the LA area with cannabis licenses included so we can hit the ground running.’ . . . In the expansion announcement, the company reported that BudCars’ primary Sacramento locations have seen tremendous growth, with revenues consistently increasing 10% week over week. While the growth has been attributed to exploding demand for contactless delivery of cannabis products due to the COVID-19 pandemic, company officials expect the upward spike to continue, even after social-distancing restrictions are loosened. SGMD forecasts its BudCars business to top $30 million in annualized revenues this year in Sacramento alone.”

420 with CNW – Louisiana Assembly OKs Medical Marijuana for Debilitating Conditions

May 21, 2020 04:20:23

On Friday, the Louisiana House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved bills that would significantly expand the state’s medical cannabis program. Residents suffering from debilitating conditions, especially those who cannot access medical marijuana, will now be happy to know that the medical marijuana program will have its list of qualifying conditions expanded to fit a wider range of ailments. Dispensaries will also be allowed to deliver marijuana products directly to the patients’ homes.

Both bills were sponsored by Rep. Larry Bagley, with his medical condition expansion bill passed 76-15 and the delivery bill was approved 80-15. This comes a week after a Louisiana House Committee approved both bills as well as several other cannabis expansion bills and sent them to the full House for debate. In a broad sense, the expansion bill will permit doctors to issue recommendations for any debilitating condition instead of the short list of conditions that is currently…

420 with CNW – Cannabis Could Prevent Coronavirus Infection, Canadian Study Finds

May 20, 2020 16:20:23

A little over four months after the coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China, the virus has infected over 4.5 million people worldwide and left at least 300,000 dead, and the hunt for a cure and ultimately a vaccine is raging on. However, due to insufficient data on the novel coronavirus and its penchant towards mutation, scientists are basically shooting in the dark and hoping for a favorable outcome. There have been rumors of numerous cures for the virus, from the anti-malaria drug hydrochxychloroquine, herbal cures and coronavirus oils to cannabis, all of which have been dismissed.

However, based on the results from a preliminary study, proponents of cannabis as a cure or means of prevention against the coronavirus shouldn’t give up just yet. Scientists conducting a study at Canada’s University of Lethbridge are now theorizing that certain strains of cannabis may possibly prevent COVID-19 infection. After studying over 400 strains of marijuana, the researchers concluded that at least a dozen of them helped in preventing the coronavirus from having…

420 with CNW – California Governor Delays Implementation of Proposed Marijuana Regulatory Changes

May 20, 2020 04:20:34

Although most states designated the cannabis industry as essential and allowed businesses to keep operating despite the lockdown, the industry as a whole has suffered a variety of setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic. A number of campaigns to legalize marijuana have been put on hold all over the country due to social distancing measures. In California, lawmakers have been forced to postpone systemic reforms to the California regulatory agencies that oversee the state’s marijuana industry.

When he announced his annual budget plan earlier this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that he wanted to; merge the trio of regulatory agencies, the Bureau of Cannabis Control, [BCC], the Department of Food and Agriculture and the Department of Public Health into a single Department of Cannabis Control [DCC] and streamline cannabis tax collections by July 2021. The BCC has oversight over retailers, delivery services, micro businesses, distributors, testing labs, cannabis events while the Department of Public Health regulates…

420 with CNW – Congress Passes Coronavirus Bill With Marijuana Banking Provisions

May 19, 2020 16:20:33

Although government-issued coronavirus-related measures were designed to curb the spread of the virus, they had an unintended consequence, economic downturn. With all but the most essential businesses ordered to close during lock-downs, the economy was in a free fall. More than 20 million Americans have lost their jobs since the start of March, and the government ended up deploying a massive $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill to help people and small businesses weather the storm.

However, due to ongoing federal prohibition, businesses in the state-legal marijuana industry were denied access to these relief funds. Federal prohibition has made banking institutions avoid cannabis businesses, dooming them to cash only transactions which in current times are a big no. Advocates, stakeholders and lawmakers decried the cannabis industry’s exclusion from these funds, stating that it pays taxes just like any other business and many small businesses in the sector are facing…
