Animoca Brands has announced it will launch an electric vehicle e-racing offering titled Formula E: High Voltage on Oct. 19, 2023. Developed via a partnership between Aminoca Brands and Amber, the Web3 EV racing game will leverage environmentally friendly blockchain technology to grant players and fans digital ownership of their in-game items.
These items will come as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with each Formula E: High Voltage player receiving four NFTs (two drivers and two cars) when they sign up. With digital ownership of their NFTs, players will be able to take greater control over their racing team and electric race cars for free.
The EV e-racing game will feature tracks from cities such as New York, Berlin, London and Rome as well as races in different weather conditions. Players will be able to equip their racing teams with the best electric cars, drivers and performance metrics. Unlike conventional games where in-game items are typically available to each player, the NFTs in Formula E: High Voltage will be rare.
Cars and drivers will be individual to different players, with cars and drivers being broken into common, rare, epic and legendary categories based on their rarity. The game will grant players an incredibly immersive experience, allowing them to collect items as well as manage, train and upgrade their drivers and cars to create their own in-game racing empires.
Formula E Gen3, an electric car built for the FIA Formula E Championship, will also be available to Formula E: High Voltage players. These players will also have access to various real and fantasy cars and drivers such as Jake Dennis, the 2023 ABB FIA Formula E World Champion, and his Porshe 99X Electric Gen 3.
The new game is part of an ecosystem of racing games called REVV Motorsport, which includes MotoGP Ignition, REVV Racing, Torque Drift and MotoGP Guru. According to Animoca, operations will rely on Flow, an energy-efficient blockchain, to provide ecofriendly entertainment to players on the open metaverse.
Flow leverages an efficient proof-of-stake consensus that makes mining for NFTs on the blockchain less energy intensive compared to making a Google search or posting on Instagram. Just like Formula E, which is the only sport to receive a net-zero carbon certification since its founding, Formula E: High Voltage will base its operations on net-zero carbon.
Formula E gaming director Kieran Holmes-Darby said Formula E is happy to partner with a gaming industry leader like Animoca Brands to launch a game that will allow players to interact with the championship in a “dynamic new way.” Likewise, Animoca Brands vice president of commercial strategy Will Griffiths called the partnership an “exhilarating moment” and said the game will prove to be an immersive experience for players with the added benefit of digital ownership of in-game items.
These online games are likely to further promote electric vehicles, and in the long-term, manufacturers such as Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) could benefit from the awareness arising from the e-racing game.
