NetworkNewsBreaks – US Enlists Canada’s Aid to Wrest Global Control of Rare Earth Elements from China

January 13, 2020 11:16:55

A recent article by Rahul Vaidyanath of Epoch Times highlighted U.S. enlistment of Canada’s help in a bid to wrest global control of rare earth elements (“REEs”) from China. According to the article, the elements, which technically aren’t rare, are necessary in the manufacture of critical components used in various applications including consumer electronics and fighter jets. China accounts for over 70% of the world’s production. “China has us by almost a noose… They’ve weaponized rare earths and it’s a really scary thing to think about,” the article reads, quoting David Wilcox, advisory board member of Central America Nickel, in a statement he recently made to NTD Television. According to the article, “The Canadian company has developed innovative extracting techniques for rare earths that could help break China’s hold, but it has never focused on the problem due to the low value of REEs and the threat of China driving down prices to put foreign competitors out of business. Other companies focus on recycling REEs from old devices.”
