4 Things Consumers Should Know About CBD Tinctures

September 6, 2019 15:00:23

CBD is all the rage and you may have heard about CBD gummies, CBD oils and CBD tinctures (even CBD-infused clothing!). If you would like to try out a CBD product, read the following important things about CBD tinctures and be an informed consumer.

Wildflower Brands Inc. (CSE: SUN) (OTCQB: WLDFF) Expands Product Offerings as CBD Becomes Mainstream in the Wellness Industry

September 6, 2019 10:10:20
  • Legislative changes and deeper understanding of the health benefits of CBD have made the hemp-derived oil highly popular in the health and wellness fields
  • Wildflower Brands is constantly working on the development of its retail network to position itself for rapid growth in these lucrative niches
  • Via partnerships, Wildflower has already doubled its retail reach, and the company reports regular inbound contact from new retailers and potential distributors

Much of the CBD product growth in the coming years will be attributed to the health and wellness niches, where CBD oil is quickly becoming mainstream due to its ability to reduce aches, control inflammation and promote a general sense of wellbeing, as a Forbes report indicates (http://cnw.fm/O0sln).

A large part of this popularity can be credited to the passing of the federal Farm Bill in late 2018. The bill legalized the production of industrial hemp, which contributed to CBD oils becoming mainstream and being included in a wide array of products – from ointments to edibles and…

Mayo Clinic Study Offers Physicians Guidance on CBD

September 6, 2019 08:00:05

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to the wider use of CBD has been the reluctance of the mainstream medical professionals to embrace this form of treatment since they don’t have ample information about how CBD works. A study by Mayo Clinic sought to address this information gap and among other things, it made suggestions about how physicians can guide their patients to the best CBD products. We have the highlights of those recommendations.

Product Source

Doctors were advised to inform their patients that the lack of regulation at the federal level means that it is not as easy to ascertain the quality of the CBD product that one wishes to buy. However, there are exceptions for states like Colorado and Oregon which have very strict standards that CBD products must meet before they are allowed on the market. If the desired products aren’t available from these states with strict product standards, then patients can explore…

California Postpones CBD Law Debate to 2020

September 5, 2019 15:00:59

The long-awaited legislation that would have regulated the use of CBD in cosmetics, beverages and foods in California has been put on hold until next year in the state senate. This action effectively means that the bill died on arrival.

When this bill reached the California Senate Appropriations Committee, it was given the classification “Suspense.” This means that the legislators put the proposed legislation aside and while it can be picked up, chances are it will not be debated in the committee until…

CBD Businesses Can Get Federal Trademark Protection, But There’s a Catch

September 4, 2019 08:00:34

In the past, many CBD companies applying for federal trademark protection from the USPTO had their requests declined because all forms of marijuana were federally illegal. CBD Could Help People Living With Tinnitus

August 29, 2019 15:00:18

A solution may now be at hand if the research being done by Tyson Ranch, the cannabis company of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, produces positive results regarding the use of CBD to treat brain injuries and the symptoms, such as insomnia and anxiety that come with those brain injuries.

Tyson Ranch is supporting research into the use of cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, to treat sports-related injuries that include…

Is CBD Oil Different from Hemp Oil?

August 27, 2019 08:00:18

Many people admit that they don’t know the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil, and this lack of clarity has prevented them from knowing which of these two to select for their needs. If you, too, aren’t sure of how CBD oil differs from hemp oil, read on and learn about these two products of the hemp plant.

CBD Oil

CBD oil is extracted from CBD flowers (buds) and stalks. These are the parts of the plant which have been found to have the highest concentration of the cannabinoid. The leaves which are closest to the buds also contain CBD, so these may also be included during…

CBD Shows Promise as a Treatment for Psychosis

August 26, 2019 15:00:27

Psychosis is a broad term used to describe beliefs which aren’t rooted in sensory experiences or reality. For example, someone may smell or see something that doesn’t exist. Psychosis can be caused by different factors, such as extreme stress, brain injury, drug use or mental illness (bipolar disorder, for example). New research is showing that cannabidiol (CBD) has promise as a treatment for psychosis even if more research needs to be done on the matter.

A randomized-placebo controlled trial conducted on 88 patients who took CBD oil alongside their conventional (pharmaceutical) medication revealed that the patients who received CBD displayed reduced symptoms of psychosis. The functional and cognitive abilities of the patients who were give CBD were also much better than those…

CBDNewsBreaks – FDA Cannabinoid Work Group Exec – Don’t Expect CBD Exception

August 26, 2019 11:24:57

A recent article posted by Hemp Industry Daily discussed the need for more research before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow CBD treatments in foods and dietary supplements. According to the article, a leader of the FDA’s new cannabinoid work group, Lowell Schiller, in talking to the National Industrial Hemp Council, warned CBD producers in attendance that the FDA plans to treat hemp extracts like any other new ingredient going into foods or drugs. “We don’t hold a grudge against (cannabinoids), but we also don’t hold them to a lower standard of safety or absolve them of other requirements,” Schiller said to the gathering in Portland, Oregon. “Consumers have a right to expect the same level of FDA protection with respect to hemp and derivatives like CBD as they would expect with respect to any other substance.”

August 23, 2019 15:00:38

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) hasn’t yet decided how the 2018 Farm Bill will be applied to travelers who are found with CBD oil on them or in their luggage. Before those updated guidelines are adopted, foreign nationals seeking entry into the U.S. still face fines, arrest and lifetime entry bans for being found in possession of “an illegal substance.”

This position was brought to light when a young Canadian lady was stopped at a border crossing, fined $500 for having a bottle of CBD oil and then given a bunch of papers indicating that she had been banned for life from…

What You Need to Know About CBD and Sports

August 23, 2019 08:00:31

You may have heard a lot about CBD and you may be wondering what this cannabis compound can do for you as an athlete. Read on and discover the answers to many of the questions that you may have had about the role of CBD in athletic performance and its legality.

Inflammation/Pain Management

Athletes experience soreness or pain after training or competitive events because of the micro-tears and the fatigue induced by their exertion. This fatigue and soreness or even pain can increase the recovery time that an athlete needs to get back to their best in readiness for more training sessions and competitive engagements on the track and field.

CBD has been proven to reduce inflammation and modulate the pain signals sent from different parts of the body to the brain. Consequently, athletes can benefit from this compound since there will be a reduced likelihood to cramp, become sore or have tight muscles.

Better Sleep

Adequate sleep is important for all athletes because it allows their bodies to rest, recover and regenerate so that the athlete can compete at a high level consistently. The repair of damaged muscle fibers also happens during sleep. CBD can facilitate quality sleep and extend how long one can sleep for proper recovery and healing of muscle tissues.

Mental Health

An athlete who cannot focus or pay rapt attention to their craft will not last long as a competitor. CBD can play an instrumental role in keeping athletes focused without having to take supplements high in caffeine.

CBD can also mitigate the stress detected by the body when muscles are over-exerted during training or athletic competitions. CBD lowers the stress response of the body by increasing the production of serotonin, so you will be able to perform better on the track and field when you aren’t stressed.

Legality of CBD in Sports

Many athletes would like to try CBD and experience its many benefits but they fear that they could be penalized for using an illegal substance. The truth is that CBD is allowed in various sports disciplines.

For example, the World Anti-Doping Agency-WADA didn’t include CBD on its updated list of substances which are prohibited by the world body. This green light from the world body has paved the way for other sports authorities, such as the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to exclude CBD from their list of banned substances.

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes CBD as a non-addictive and safe compound which isn’t subject to any international controls. Experts believe that the growing body of research and the absence of restrictions could be the reason why CBD industry actors, such as Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) and Grapefruit Boulevard Investments Inc. (OTCQB: IGNG) may either already be having or planning to bring CBD products to market targeting athletes.

August 22, 2019 15:00:57

While hundreds of CBD manufacturers are scrambling to make gummies and other CBD edibles, one manufacturer has opted to strike out on a less travelled path and has found success in making the ingredients that people can use when making CBD edibles. That company is Azuca, based in New York City.

The company makes CBD-infused syrups and sugars which users can stir into doughs, batters and drinks. As you may have guessed, their main ingredient is tiny granules of sugar from which they formulate their different products which have become very popular among people who would rather make their own CBD edibles instead of buying those that are ready to consume.

This “culinary cannabis technology company” was founded by Chef Ron Silver. His rise to fame started when he opened the doors of the New York City-based Bubbly’s Restaurant.

Recently, Azuca shifted its manufacturing wing to Colorado. This decision was motivated by the desire to take advantage of the favorable legal regime in Colorado which allows CBD to be infused into products that are meant for human and animal consumption.

Azuca’s decision to move to Colorado provides proof that Gov. Polis’ administration is succeeding in its bid to make Colorado the heart of the hemp and cannabis industries in the U.S.

Kim Rael, the CEO and co-founder of Azuca, reveals that this CBD company was started with the aim of addressing one of the biggest problems that users of CBD products have. That problem is how to determine the correct dosing.

She says that they believe that size matters, and when it comes to CBD dosing, smaller is usually better. She compared the ingredients made by Azuca to being as small as a marble while the other products on the market are as big as a large beach ball.

Azuca filed and received three patients in 2017. That proprietary technology has enabled the company to make CBD molecules water-soluble. In this way, consumers of the products made using Azuca ingredients can feel the effects of the edible much sooner, and that can potentially eliminate the problem of people ingesting too much CBD or THC in a bid to notice the compound kick in sooner.

Asked whether Azuca products will not get lost in the dust left by the other manufacturers who use those products as ingredients, Ron Silver revealed that they are using the model adopted by microchip maker Intel and other such companies whose products are used in other products. Intel puts their branding on computers to let users know that Intel’s technology is powering their devices, and Azuca is borrowing that method to remain visible even when other manufacturers use Azuca products inside what they make.

CBD industry analysts find this originality of thought very intriguing and believe that other industry players like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) are gladdened by what Azuca is doing to expand the CBD space through bringing innovative products that complement what is already available.

CBD Testing Best Practices That Put Consumers at Ease

August 22, 2019 08:00:05

As the competition for the hearts and money of CBD consumers heats up, the clear winners are likely to be the CBD companies which go to great lengths to implement the testing best practices recommended by CBD industry experts. The following best practices highlight some of the vital tests CBD products should undergo before going to market.

Documentation

It is critically important for CBD product manufacturers to maintain detailed documents on various aspects of their operations, such as where they source their hemp raw material, the manufacturing processes followed and the analysis reports obtained after testing for different parameters, such as the ingredients in each batch of products.

This documentation provides a paper trail that ensures complete traceability of any product back to the source farm. It is advisable to keep these documents, in either hard or soft copy (or even both), for at least five years.

Standardization

It is well known that cannabis varies a great deal from one strain, or even variants of the same strain, to another. CBD companies must therefore invest the necessary resources required to ensure that a consumer will get a product of the same attributes each time they make a purchase.

Reference substances (terpene profiles, CBD content, etc.) should be documented so that all product batches are standardized to be uniform. For example, gas chromatograph tests can be done to confirm ingredient uniformity, and different batches of products can be blended so that all are uniform. Once users get the same experience after buying different items of the same product, then a company can be sure that it is making progress in establishing itself as a trusted brand.

Physical Description

The product specification sheet should also include a physical description of the CBD product. The parameters to include in this description may include the appearance, viscosity, particle size, odor, taste and any other such parameters pertinent to the product. This description can help users or other interested parties to identify a genuine product from an adulterated or spoiled one.

Impurities and Contaminants

Consumers are keen on matters of product safety, and tests done to ascertain that impurities or contaminants have been kept well within the tolerable limits help to address any concerns. For example, tests to identify how much THC is in a CBD product are vital, and so are tests for pesticides, fungal and microbial contaminants, heavy metals and residual solvents.

Stability

How was the expiry date of the product determined? Appropriate tests to establish how the product fares in different storage conditions need to be conducted to determine when the product will spoil or expire. These test results add weight to the documentation of the CBD product.

Product testing requirements often vary from one jurisdiction to another. For example, California passed Prop 65 which imposes strict testing and labeling requirements for all products destined for the California market. Experts think that the awareness of the complexities of different markets could explain why CBD industry actors like Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) may even go as far as packaging products destined for different markets differently.

Colorado Manufacturer Teams Up with South Carolina CBD Company to Reach Wider Market

August 21, 2019 15:00:25

Palmetto Harmony, a CBD oil company based in South Carolina, has announced that it is merging with RE Botanicals, Inc. (based in Colorado) in order to reach a wider market across the U.S.

Palmetto Harmony was founded in 2015 by a mom (Janel Ralph) who was desperate to find a solution that would give her daughter some relief from the seizures that she was having due to a genetic disorder she was born with.

Ralph reveals that from the time her daughter, Harmony, started taking CBD oil, there has been a 95 percent reduction in her epileptic seizures while the pharmaceuticals she takes have reduced by 90 percent.

With such a history, it is no wonder that Palmetto Harmony was founded to bring to the market high-quality organic CBD oil to help patients who found themselves in need of a remedy that pharmaceuticals are unable to provide.

On Tuesday, Janel Ralph announced that her company was merging with another premium product manufacturer in order to reach a larger market. She and John Roulac, the founder of RE Botanicals, met during a party to celebrate the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill.

The merger will give Palmetto Harmony access to a national market since RE Botanicals, Inc. has a presence in most of the West Coast markets. By the same token, RE Botanicals Inc. will benefit from the merger by accessing CBD oil for its manufacturing processes. This will result in reduced operational costs if the CBD oil is coming from a partner.

The announcement of the merger also states that the new entity will be called RE Botanicals, Inc., but the products that were made by the parent companies will not alter their branding or formulation.

Markets aside, the merger brings opportunities for the two entities to position the companies for growth, innovation and efficiencies in production.

Speaking about the merger, Ralph revealed that the industry has grown rapidly and there is a proliferation of companies both online and offline. Consolidation, through mergers and acquisitions, is therefore necessary for sustained growth in this highly competitive industry.

Ralph also predicts that there could be a drop in product prices once the Food and Drug Administration releases its draft final rules for the industry. Industry experts are uncertain whether other players like Wildflower Brands Inc. (CSE: SUN) (OTCQB: WLDFF) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) share the same industry outlook as what is hinted at by the founder of Palmetto Harmony.

Influential Nonprofit Drafts Model CBD Bill for States to Adopt

August 21, 2019 08:00:52

An influential conservative nonprofit organization called American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is putting together a draft bill that should serve as a model for the few states which have not yet passed enabling laws for the hemp and CBD industry. The draft bill was presented and discussed during this year’s annual general meeting that was held in Austin, Texas last week.

ALEC is a body which brings together private sector stakeholders on different issues and conservative lawmakers. Their purpose is to draft and disseminate model policies which different states can consider as they discuss legislation for different topics of concern.

This year, the Task Force of ALEC in charge of Energy, Environment and Agriculture (EEA) discussed a draft law through which states can legalize the cultivation, extracting and processing of products from industrial hemp. The draft bill is categorical in stating that this legislation doesn’t legalize cannabis.

The model law seems to be made with those states that haven’t legalized hemp and its derivatives in mind. They include South Dakota, Mississippi and Idaho.

The provisions in this model law point to the fact that the bill is in line with the federal law legalizing industrial hemp. For example, hemp is defined as a cannabis plant whose THC content doesn’t exceed 0.3 percent of the plant’s dry matter. The draft bill also proposes that products derived from hemp are legal, which is the same as what the 2018 Farm Bill states.

However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ruled that hemp derivatives, such as CBD, cannot be used as ingredients in foods, cosmetics and dietary supplements unless alternative rules are developed for such a purpose.

The issue of CBD marks the point at which the draft bill formulated by ALEC’s Task Force departs from the ruling of the FDA. The draft policy states that CBD can be marketed as an ingredient in topical products and products that may be ingested orally or by inhalation by humans or animals as long as those products don’t contain THC.

It isn’t yet clear whether the draft bills were adopted by the Council, and how the members voted if the bill was put up for a vote. It isn’t also clear what the subsequent steps will be once ALEC adopts the hemp and CBD model law.

All the same, it is widely believed that industry actors like VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) take the bills written by ALEC seriously since they point to the direction legislation is likely to take.

Federal Agency Announces That Credit Unions Can Serve CBD and Hemp Businesses

August 20, 2019 15:00:11

A federal financial agency released an update to its guidelines on CBD and hemp banking on Monday in response to pressure from numerous lawmakers asking for clarification on the matter.

The National Credit Union Administration-NCUA revealed in its interim guidance that there is no problem for credit unions to provide banking services to CBD and hemp businesses since these industries became legal after the enactment of the Farm Bill in 2018.

The guidelines underscore the potential of hemp and CBD and reiterate the importance of access to banking services if the players in those industries are to realize the full potential that was envisaged when the Farm Bill of 2018 was passed.

Rodney Hood, the Chairman of NCUA, said in a press statement that credit unions have a distinction in serving the agricultural sector. He believes that this successful history will be an important tool that the credit unions can use to decide when and how to offer different services, such as loans, to the different players in the hemp and CBD industries.

Last month, Hood had written a letter to a lawmaker from Colorado, Sen. Michael Brett (D-CO), informing him that NCUA would soon release updated guidelines regarding the hemp and CBD industries. However, Hood had also added that any guidance released would possibly change when the USDA releases its rules for the hemp industry.

The guidance states that as credit unions serve the hemp industry, they should adhere to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations in force.

More specifically, the guidance advises that credit unions should file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) for any transactions that seem to be illegal or possibly linked to money laundering activities. However, no SARs are required for any transactions completed by hemp businesses that are in compliance with local, state and federal laws.

The credit unions were also cautioned to be mindful that some hemp businesses are operating under the 2014 Farm Act which established hemp pilot programs. Such programs have specific rules and limitations imposed on them, so the credit unions need to familiarize themselves with those requirements so that they offer services based on their assessment of the risks inherent in the legal regime governing the hemp pilot programs.

The National Credit Union Administration promised to issue additional guidelines once the expected USDA rules are released before the 2020 planting season.

Hemp and CBD industry watchers believe that this updated guidance will come as a big relief to industry actors like Therma Bright Inc. (TSX.V: THRM) (OTC: THRBF) and TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) who have always found it hard to find mainstream banks to offer them affordable banking services.

3 Tests for CBD Manufacturers Who Will Win With Mainstream Retailers

August 20, 2019 08:00:24

Let’s face it, mainstream retailers hold the key to getting different CBD products to the millions of clients that CBD manufacturers would like to reach. Unfortunately, not all CBD manufacturers will win the hearts of mainstream retail giants, and those that do will have to pass the following three tests.

The Scalability Test

Many CBD companies are startups that are looking for their big break into the market. The ones that will attract the attention of big distributors and mainstream retailers are the ones that are poised to quickly scale up their production in order to meet the large orders that come with partnering with a large distributor.

Companies which cannot meet the large orders made by big retailers with a presence in many markets across the country will be dropped in favor of those whose manufacturing and quality assurance systems are robust enough to scale up in response to market demand.

The Connections Test

To be honest, luck often has very little to do with whether a company wins the hearts of mainstream product retailers or not. In most cases, the companies that manage to get shelf space from large retailers are the companies which put consumer packaged goods experts in key positions in their hierarchies.

Those consumer packaged goods (CPG) experts usually come with connections within the distribution system, and those connections are leveraged to get a foot in the door during discussions with large retail chains and distributors.

CBD companies should look around and get these experts on their payroll so that they can have a chance to stand out from the hundreds of CBD product manufacturers eyeing the same space on retail shelves.

The Integrity Test

The U.S. is a largely litigious nation, and large distributors or retail chains are particular targets of liability lawsuits. These companies therefore go to great lengths to scrutinize the companies that would like to put their products on their retail shelves.

It is therefore important for CBD companies that wish to do business with these large entities to put their house in order regarding the type of claims that they make with respect to their products. The case of the FDA warning to Curaleaf immediately comes to mind as an illustration of this.

Adhering to all existing laws, providing third-party test results for products, transparency and traceability of a product to its source and other matters of product integrity are crucial in securing retail space on the shelves of large distributors and mainstream retail giants.

The requirements above apply to nearly every product that needs space in major retailers’ premises, but they take on an added degree of importance for CBD products which are currently operating in a kind of legal grey area at the federal level. It is for this reason that experts believe major CBD industry players like The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) go to great lengths to cover all bases before bringing any product to market.

CBD Could Ease Menopause Symptoms

August 19, 2019 15:00:56

Most women will admit that they dread the time they will undergo menopause because of the dreadful symptoms associated with this phase of their life. Now anecdotal evidence is accumulating to the effect that CBD can alleviate most of the symptoms linked to menopause.

Menopause, which is categorized into perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause, can trigger effects which last for years. The most common symptoms are hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, depression and many others.

Reports are emerging that women who smoke cannabis which is high in cannabidiol (CBD) or use CBD products made from hemp get relief from many of these symptoms. CBD has for long been credited with combating anxiety and depression, so it is no surprise that menopausal women are taking to this compound to ease these symptoms.

However, the most welcome news for millions of women is that CBD can help them to deal with the night sweats and hot flashes associated with menopause. Hot flashes are said to be worst experiences that women go through during menopause because the heat wave which suddenly sweeps across their face and upper bodies are very unpleasant. Hot flashes have also been known to trigger temper tantrums.

Those who have used CBD to deal with hot flashes say that a woman in menopause should always have a CBD vape pen with her at all times. Once she feels a hot flash developing, she can immediately stop whatever she is doing and then take several draws on the CBD vaporizer. The relief comes almost immediately, according to many women who have used this remedy for hot flashes.

Another option that has been suggested for taking CBD in order to deal with the symptoms of menopause is by consuming a cannabis edible, such as a gummy. This method gives relief that lasts for longer than what one attains when they smoke the CBD.

However, one needs to ingest a larger amount of CBD in order to get the desired relief from menopause symptoms. This amount is higher than what is ordinarily ingested for minor aches and pains. Luckily, no single case of a CBD or cannabis overdose has been reported, so the worst that can happen is that you will complete your supply of edibles sooner than you had thought.

While this anecdotal evidence is encouraging, experts are convinced that CBD industry participants like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) would be happier if a randomized double-blind clinical trial, rather than anecdotal evidence, confirmed that CBD is beneficial to menopausal women.

Study Finds that CBD Reduces Aggressive Behavior

August 19, 2019 08:00:48

A new study done by scientists in Brazil has found that cannabidiol (CBD) can reduce the aggressiveness induced by isolation. The findings of this research were published in Progress in Neuro-Pharmacology and Biological Psychiatry. The scientists were from the medical school of the University of Sao Paolo and the Sao Paolo Center of Applied Research in Neuroscience.

A resident-intruder test model was used to study what effects varying doses of CBD would have on several groups of mice isolated for several days before new ones are introduced into their cages. The prolonged isolation causes the “residents” to act aggressively towards the “intruders.”

The mice were divided into five groups, with each group having six to eight male animals. One group was given an injection of 5mg/kg of CBD. The mice in this group launched their attacks against the intruders approximately four minutes after the intruders were brought to their cage. Approximately 12 attacks were recorded for this group.

In the second group, the mice got an injection of 15mg/kg. The attacks in this group started almost 11 minutes after intruders were introduced into the cages of the resident mice. In all, five attacks were recorded, which was a marked drop from what was observed in the first group.

A third group of mice got 30mg/kg injections while a fourth group got 60mg/kg CBD injections. There was a marked change in the trend of the results because the higher doses of CBD given to the mice in these two groups didn’t produce a further reduction in their aggressiveness. Instead, the mice attacked the intruders sooner, and the number of attacks also increased.

The fifth group was the control group and didn’t get any CBD. In this group, the residents attacked the intruders barely two minutes after the intruders entered the cage, and in total, 25 attacks were recorded.

The research clearly demonstrated that in limited doses, CBD can inhibit the aggressive tendencies of the resident mice towards the intruders. However, as the dose increases, the beneficial effects are progressively lost until when high enough doses of CBD are given there is no difference between the mice which haven’t got any CBD and those which have received injections of high doses of the compound.

The study authors concluded that CBD can provide an important option in dealing with some of the psychosis-like effects of THC because CBD activates the receptors of serotonin (responsible for inducing relaxation) in the brain. They therefore called for more research to be done about the specific mechanisms through which CBD acts on the brain, and the particular dosage that can deliver benefits before the threshold is reached and the gains are reversed.

It would be enlightening to hear how the findings of this Brazil study compare with what CBD industry actors like Organigram Holdings Inc. (TSX.V: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI) and Plus Products (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQB: PLPRF) know about the effects of CBD on aggressiveness.

Could Your Next Pain Medication Be a CBD Patch?

August 16, 2019 15:00:01

As the different methods through which CBD can be delivered continue to evolve, CBD patches are set to make their mark as well. CBD is widely credited with having analgesic, anti-inflammatory and other effects related to pain management. Could CBD pain patches therefore be the next big thing in pain management?

Why CBD Pain Patches May Catch On

One of the reasons why CBD patches may captivate consumers is that the effects of the compound can be noticed sooner when compared to other methods of administration. For example, when CBD is taken orally, one may have to wait for an hour or more before they can notice the cannabinoid kicking in. A patch can give faster results because the CBD is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, so one can get pain relief sooner.

Secondly, CBD patches, like other kinds of therapeutic patches, are easier to administer. It is possible for a manufacturer to design CBD patches that slowly release their contents throughout the day. This can make the patches attractive because someone doesn’t have to disrupt their busy day in order to take their CBD medication. Once the patch is in place, you forget all about it until the next day when it is time to replace it with a fresh one. Compare this convenience with having to pop capsules every few hours throughout the day!

Precautions to Take

While CBD patches may provide a convenient way to get your CBD medication for any number of ailments, especially pain, which you want to treat, it is important to pay attention to a number of precautions when selecting these products.

First, pay attention to the purity of the CBD used. Since the compound will be absorbed into your bloodstream directly, you don’t want a patch with CBD containing contaminants that can enter your bloodstream. The product labels usually stipulate the purity, such as 99 percent CBD, contained therein. Aim for the highest purity possible.

Another factor you should look into is the way the CBD was extracted. The best, but costliest extraction method is through the use of carbon dioxide. This method doesn’t alter the chemical composition of the CBD, so you will enjoy the therapeutic benefits of this compound. Some manufacturers use chemical solvents to extract CBD from hemp in order to cut costs. While the resultant product will be more affordable, its therapeutic properties will be compromised by the harsh chemicals used to extract the CBD. You may therefore be better off opting for patches containing CBD which was extracted using CO2.

Experts believe that even industry players like Nabis Holdings Inc. (CSE: NAB) (OTC: NABIF) (FRA: 71P) and Neutra Corp. (OTCQB: NTRR) have no idea how far innovators will go as they design novel or improved CBD delivery methods, so buyers have to do their own research on each product before making a purchasing decision.

Top FDA Official Blames Federal Drug Scheduling System for Inhibiting CBD Research

August 16, 2019 08:00:04

Lowell Schiller, the FDA Principal Associate Commissioner for Policy, has said that the drug scheduling system of the FDA has hampered the ability of the scientific community to research CBD, and the FDA is now scrambling to fill the knowledge gaps that would have been filled long ago.

Schiller made these remarks while speaking at the 2019 Hemp Business Summit organized by the National Industrial Hemp Council on Tuesday. The FDA official kept repeating that the agency was “excited” about the potential of CBD.

During his speech, Schiller emphasized that the FDA has regulatory authority over hemp and any products made from it. He added that it is currently illegal to add a hemp derivative into the food chain as an ingredient in cosmetics, food or dietary supplements.

Hemp-derived products can only enter the food supply once the FDA makes alternative rules to regulate such uses of hemp products. He admitted that this rulemaking process was more complex because the FDA had already approved a CBD-based drug (Epidiolex).

Speaking about research into hemp, Schiller said that the scheduling of hemp and marijuana as controlled substances had stood in the way of research into cannabis compounds, such as CBD. The legal status of hemp and its products only changed at the end of 2018 when the Farm Bill was passed.

The FDA official revealed that even in their initial stages of considering how to regulate CBD, they realized that they knew so little about this compound and about the possible ramifications of putting it in dietary supplements, food and cosmetics.

Schiller pointed out that research needs to be done to understand how one can be affected by consuming a large amount of CBD, how the substance interacts with other drugs, effects of using CBD during pregnancy and the effects of the long-term consumption of CBD.

Once the FDA gets the answers to those questions, it will be easier to chart the way forward from a regulatory perspective. To that end, the FDA official revealed that the agency had picked interest in their own version of CBD which he explained as “Collect Better Data.”

He also said that as the agency works round the clock to develop hemp and CBD rules in a transparent manner, it will keep in mind the different calls that have been made by lawmakers and industry members to come up with rules that will not interfere excessively in the marketing of CBD.

The official from the regulator ended by asking the CBD industry for support on this journey to help the scientific community to catch up with the pace at which public interest and commercial undertakings in CBD are moving.

USDA Undersecretary Greg Ibach also addressed the hemp and CBD conference. Analysts believe that industry players like Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) and Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) were taking notes during the conference in order to get ideas about the kind of rules the FDA would formulate.

CBD Drug Receives EMA Marketing Approval

August 15, 2019 15:00:19

A CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, has received the nod from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to start being marketed as an additional treatment alternative for two kinds of seizures. This recommendation will now be presented to the European Commission for a final vote before the drug can access the EU market.

It is almost certain that the EU Commission will approve the drug since the commission normally endorses the recommendations made by the human medicines committee of the European Medicines Agency.

The EMA based on the results of four randomized tests that the manufacturer of the drug conducted to show that the CBD-based medicine is safe and can treat the forms of seizures that it is intended to be marketed for.

It should be remembered that last year, Epidiolex made history as the first marijuana-based drug to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat two rare types of epilepsy that affect kids.

The approval by the FDA came along with a green light from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which categorized the drug as having a minimal potential to be abused.

Epidiolex is made from CBD, one of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The drug has a THC content that is less than 0.1 percent, which is way below the U.S. legal definition of the THC content of industrial hemp that became federally legal with the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill.

If this drug finally makes its way onto the European market, it will create a ripple effect in even unexpected places.

For example, the U.S. federal government retains marijuana on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, insisting that marijuana has a high potential for abuse and it has no known medical value.

If the FDA and the EU accept that a drug has been made from marijuana, doesn’t that bring into question the international classification of marijuana as a substance with no medicinal value?

From last year, the marijuana community has been waiting on a commission of the UN to pronounce itself on the recommendations that were made by a World Health Organization panel of experts to the effect that the classification of marijuana should be reviewed. However, the narcotics commission of the UN has kept postponing when the matter will be included on the agenda of their meetings.

In the meantime, evidence of the different therapeutic benefits of cannabis and its compounds is mounting, and this could explain why several countries and jurisdictions are defying the UN by legalizing marijuana either for recreational or medical use (or both).

CBD industry experts believe that industry players like Hemptown USA and IONIC Brands Corp. (CSE: IONC) (OTC: IONKF) will hope that the approval of Epidiolex to enter the EU market will result in more acceptance of CBD as a therapeutic cannabis compound.

High Fat Food Increases Oral CBD Absorption, Study Finds

August 15, 2019 08:00:29

Last year, the FDA approved the use of a drug derived from CBD to treat a rare form of pediatric epilepsy. Even with such regulatory action, the scientific community has been unsure about the way food promotes or hinders the absorption of CBD taken orally into the body. This question prompted researchers at the University of Minnesota to conduct a clinical trial to examine whether eating a meal high in fat could improve the rate at which one’s body absorbed orally administered CBD.

The researched measured the amount of CBD that could be detected in the blood of patients at an epilepsy care clinic. The capsules the patients were taking contained CBD with a 99 percent purity.

The researchers then gave some patients a standardized high-fat breakfast before they took their CBD medication while another group took the medication on an empty stomach. CBD concentrations in the blood of the individuals in these two groups were measured.

The study discovered that the detectable CBD in the blood of patients increased four-fold if those patients ate a fatty meal before ingesting the drug. In some patients, the increase in absorption of CBD was as high as 14 times what was registered in those who didn’t eat anything before taking the CBD capsules.

The researchers also found that there was no difference in the cognitive function markers of the two groups of patients despite one group having higher CBD levels in their blood. This finding is similar to what other studies have shown that CBD has no effect on cognitive function, unlike THC which can impair one’s cognitive abilities.

The study authors conclude that the meals a person has can affect the concentration of CBD in their blood, so adjustments need to be made to patients’ diets in order to ensure that CBD remains at the desired concentration in the bloodstream in order to initiate the therapeutic impact that is required.

The study findings were published in the journal Epilepsia and they are expected to trigger modifications to the advice or instructions that patients are given as they take CBD as a sole or complementary form of medication for different ailments and conditions.

According to industry analysts, the CBD industry and all its players like Grapefruit Boulevard Investments Inc. (OTCQB: IGNG) and Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) are likely to welcome this research because it brings clarity on how patients can maximize the benefits they get from CBD treatments. The total cost of treatment could also go down since more can be achieved by modifying one’s diet in order to increase CBD absorption rates.

CBD Dispensing Robots Make Their Debut in NYC

August 14, 2019 15:00:47

Greenbox Robotics has installed its first set of artificial intelligence powered robots to dispense cannabidiol (CBD) in New York City. These first bots were installed at Come Back Daily, a CBD and wellness products retailer.

Zack Johnson, the founder of Greenbox Robotics, believes that these robots will play a major role in boosting the business of CBD companies. This is because the robots can be accessed even during hours when the business premises are closed.

Greenbox also sees their robots speeding up the sales process since many clients will be able to make their purchase using these machines instead of queuing up at tills in retail shops.

A perhaps more vital role that the AI robots could play has to do with their ability to educate consumers about the different CBD products available. Once a user walks to the integrated touchscreen of the robot, he or she can click on any product that they would like to buy or learn about.

The user is then given all the information that a manufacturer has availed about the selected product. For example, the dosage, what the CBD product can help with and third party tests to prove the accuracy of the information on the label.

Once a customer has all this information, he or she will be empowered to make an informed decision regarding the best products for his or her needs. This is because the customer can click on different products and read what information is available about those products.

The physical design of the AI robots seems to suggest that the manufacturer of the robots had Instagram and other social media platforms in mind because the robots are visually attractive, so users would be forgiven for posing and taking pictures while making a CBD purchase at any of these machines.

Greenbox Robotics hopes that businesses will welcome the robots as branding and advertising tools for their products. So far, this seems to be happening because CBD businesses are scrambling to have the branded robots installed in different public places, such as outside shopping malls and inside grocery stores.

The fully interactive robots will allow Greenbox Robotics and its clients to gather data on the buying habits of different demographics of their customers, and this information will help CBD product sellers to more intelligently stock products in areas or outlets serving the different demographics. For example, it wouldn’t make sense to avail a product to college students if that product has proved to be a hit among retirees.

Industry watchers believe that CBD industry actors like Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) and Golden Developing Solutions Inc. (OTC: DVLP) welcome the AI robots since they will help the industry to reach its target clients in different ways.

How to Determine the Amount of CBD to Take

August 14, 2019 08:00:24

When people want to use CBD for the first time, they are uncertain about the quantity they should take in order to get the effects they desire, such as pain relief or dealing with insomnia. While there is no clear cut answer regarding how much CBD one should take, the following factors can guide you as you decide the right quantity for your needs.

CBD Concentration

CBD concentration in products is usually indicated in milligrams. The higher the concentration indicated on the label, the less the quantity you may need to attain the effects that you want. For example, you may need to take more drops of a CBD oil marked 10mg when compared to the number of drops that you could take if the product was labelled 50mg.

Your Bodyweight

Like all medications, how much you weigh will determine what quantity of CBD you need for your condition. Individuals who are heavier generally require a larger quantity of CBD when compared to those who are lighter.

You may therefore read the product information and determine how much to take based on the guidelines that are provided for people of different weights.

The Desired Effect

The purpose for which you are using CBD could also play a role in determining how much CBD is sufficient. For example, someone who is using CBD to deal with chronic pain may need more drops when compared to another person who wants to relax and have a good night’s sleep.

This information is usually given to people who buy their CBD products from marijuana dispensaries, so you may need to do your own research about the quantity of CBD required to trigger the specific effects that you desire if you are getting it from another source, such as a gas station.

Your Tolerance Level

When people take CBD for the first time, the effects will show sooner with just a little of the substance consumed. However, as your body becomes more accustomed to CBD, you may need to take more and more of it in order to achieve the same results.

This is similar to what happens with other substances, such as alcohol and marijuana. Individuals with higher tolerance levels require larger quantities than those who are still new to the substance. Where do you belong on the CBD tolerance continuum?

Each of the four factors above exerts its influence on how much CBD you will need. To avoid having to do the complicated math of how those factors interact, find a simple online calculator and enter information in the available fields so that you get advice on how much CBD to take. It is better to err on the side of caution by starting with smaller quantities and work your way up if results aren’t forthcoming.

Still unsure where to start? Analysts believe CBD industry actors like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) would be more than willing to guide you through the entire process if you contact them.

Top Democratic Senator Urges Regulators to Clarify on CBD Banking

August 13, 2019 15:00:46

The Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has written a letter to different federal regulators of the financial sector asking them to release an update to their guidelines to banks and other financial institutions regarding access to financial services by companies in the hemp and CBD industries.

While the 2018 Farm Act legalized hemp and its derivatives, farmers and other actors in the hemp and CBD industries still face major challenges when they want to open bank accounts or access other financial services, such as credit card processing and loans for their businesses.

This state of affairs has prompted Sen. Schumer to write a letter to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation-FDIC, the Federal Reserve and the OCC (Office of the Controller of Currency).

In his letter, Schumer notes that the hemp industry is in its infancy and is poised for major growth, but all the available opportunities will amount to nothing if the industry still finds it hard to get loans or find affordable credit card processors.

Schumer is an avid supporter of the hemp and CBD sectors, having played a leading role in the passing of the Farm Bill of 2018, as well as playing a key role in bringing an industrial hemp park to New York from where hemp will be grown and processed into products that are ready for the market.

Schumer’s letter isn’t the first to financial regulators. Other lawmakers, such as Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) also wrote a similar letter in June this year. Congress has also been applying pressure so that financial regulators clarify to banks that it is safe for them to work with the CBD and hemp industries.

Schumer specifically notes that smaller businesses are the most impacted by the regulatory grey area. For example, some employees of CBD companies have said that they cannot get loans from banks simply because they work for a CBD company.

He therefore requests that regulators clarify that hemp and CBD businesses are legitimate and should therefore be treated in the same way by banks as other legal businesses are treated. He also wants the regulators to provide guidance which will help financial institutions to conduct a risk analysis of CBD businesses that apply for credit or other services.

Industry pundits believe the voices of lawmakers calling on federal financial regulators to clarify that CBD businesses are welcome to industry actors like Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) since the potential of the industry can only be realized when there are no regulatory bottlenecks in the way of industry players.

3 Alternative Payment Service Providers CBD Companies Can Consider

August 13, 2019 08:00:26

While hemp and its products were legalized by the 2018 Farm Act, CBD companies have been having a hard time finding payment processing service providers. The existing ones who have been serving the industry are pulling the plug citing a variety of reasons, such as the unclear regulatory environment. Here are some options that CBD companies can consider if they find themselves locked out by their current payment processor.

Domestic E-Checks

Your company doesn’t need to be of a certain minimum size in order to enroll with a domestic e-check provider. This option doesn’t rely on banks, and the changes in the attitude of banks towards CBD companies hasn’t affected e-check service providers.

It is important to note that while setup and monthly fees are higher for e-check payment processing, the percentages levied against each transaction are lower than what domestic credit card processors charge.

Offshore Credit Card Processing

If domestic credit card processors are turning their back, offshore processors can be a viable alternative to keep your business working. For example, the regulations of the CBD industry in Europe are relatively loose, so it shouldn’t be hard for your company to find a credit card processor on the European continent.

However, some major processors, such as MasterCard, are beginning to demand that businesses which use its credit card processing services in Europe are required to have an address in Europe. Shop around until you find a credible processor who will address the needs of your company.

Payment Terminals

If most of the business of your CBD company is conducted offline, then it may be easier for you to avoid disruptions by turning to payment terminal providers. These are easier to find in the U.S. even if banks aren’t cozying up to the CBD industry.

The payment terminal provider puts all the money taken from customers who swipe their cards into a bank account that you designate. GreenBox and Naturepay are examples of payment terminal service providers that still work with CBD companies.

Even if the way CBD companies are being treated can be equated to what is happening to undocumented immigrants, it is still possible to make money in this industry that is growing rapidly. Analysts are convinced that major players like Wildflower Brands Inc. (CSE: SUN) (OTCQB: WLDFF) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) need to find a permanent solution to this situation so that the CBD industry isn’t be bogged down by an inability to process the payments coming to them for the products which customers are scrambling for in the U.S.

4 Questions to Ask When Selecting CBD Products

August 12, 2019 15:00:20

Have you just decided to buy and use a CBD product for the first time? Here are some useful questions that you should look into as you do your research on the best product to select.

Where is the Company Based?

Given that CBD products are relatively new and there are no specific regulations governing the industry at the federal level, it is important for you to find out where a CBD product maker is located.

For example, if that manufacturer is based in Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington State, then you can be sure that what the product label says is true. This is because in these states, CBD products are subjected to rigorous testing requirements in order to confirm that any information provided on the label is accurate. For instance, the CBD content of any oil is verified before a given product batch is cleared for the market.

Knowledge of the location of the company making the CBD product you wish to buy will therefore allow you to do your due diligence about the product.

What Certification or Product Verification Information is Available?

It is also possible for you to buy CBD products made by companies that are based in states which don’t have specific regulations for the CBD industry if the manufacturers of those products get their products certified or tested by third party laboratories.

Given that many people buy CBD products online and have them shipped to their address, it is vital that you check for the availability of independent laboratory test results on a website of a manufacturer of CBD products. Certifications can also suffice in lieu of the test results. In this way, you will be sure that you have selected the right product for your needs.

From Which Plant Part Was the CBD Extracted?

CBD is usually extracted from hemp flowers and hemp leaves. Some CBD is also present in the stalks, but this is usually limited. If you see a company saying that it extracts its CBD from other plants of the plant, such as the seeds, then that product may not be what it claims to be. For example, hempseed oil isn’t CBD oil, so don’t mistake one for the other.

What Else is in the Product?

Read the ingredient list and be sure that only CBD-related ingredients are in the CBD product you wish to buy. For example, if you are buying a CBD tincture, it shouldn’t have any artificial or other ingredients, such as shea butter. Otherwise, how sure will you be that the outcomes you see are due to the CBD or the other ingredients?

Analysts believe that CBD industry actors like VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) and VPR Brands LP (OTC: VPRB) have their work cut out to educate the public so that only the best products get a share of the market.

US Government Allows Tilray to Import CBD Products for Research

August 12, 2019 08:00:10

Tilray, a Canadian pot company, announced on Thursday that the US government had granted it permission to import high-quality CBD products into the US for research purposes. The School of Medicine at New York University will partner with Tilray to conduct two clinical trials using the imported CBD products.

NYU plans to study the effect of CBD on patients who suffer from alcohol use disorder. The other clinical trial will focus on patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In order to do this research, NYU needed high-quality marijuana raw materials, and Tilray stepped in to address that need. The CBD will be in capsule form.

The research comes amidst widespread beliefs that CBD products can be viable alternatives to the traditional medicines used to treat or manage different conditions. However, there has been a shortage of scientific studies to confirm that CBD works for different ailments. The studies at NYU are just some of the ongoing trials aimed at getting the scientific data needed to give the public and policymakers a sound basis for the decisions that they make.

The planned trials at NYU will be randomized double-blind clinical trials. This type of study design is the gold standard in the scientific community for any findings to be regarded as credible. NYU therefore has opted for the very best way in which to do its research.

The timing of the research also deserves some attention. In the past, industrial hemp was illegal, just as marijuana still is. Consequently, scientists found it hard to research the benefits of the different marijuana compounds since the U.S. federal government established a prohibitive bureaucracy that the scientific community had to navigate before they could get approval for their trials to begin.

Now that hemp is legal across the U.S., the scientific community is using the current favorable climate to use cannabinoids from hemp to study how different compounds can be beneficial or otherwise to people.

New York University isn’t the first research institution to get approval to import marijuana compounds. Other entities, such as the University of California San Diego and the Ultimate Fighting Championship Performance Institute have also partnered with Canadian marijuana companies to import research-grade cannabis products which aren’t locally available as yet.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the U.S. federal government to license more cultivators and manufacturers of research-grade marijuana products to supplement what is available from the University of Mississippi. It isn’t clear when the DEA will act upon the applications it received in this regard.

Industry watchers are convinced that CBD industry players like Therma Bright Inc. (TSX.V: THRM) (OTC: THRBF) and TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) will not be content until the U.S. fully modifies its policies to allow the industry to thrive.

Why THC Companies Should Also Start CBD Lines

August 9, 2019 15:00:32

Industry estimates put the total sales of both recreational and medical marijuana products in the U.S. at approximately $10 billion in 2018 alone while CBD products generated gross sales of more than $238 million in the same year. Both industries are still growing, and CBD registered a 57 percent growth rate in 2018. This brings an interesting possibility that if THC (marijuana) companies diversify into the CBD industry, they stand to benefit from both worlds. Here are some compelling arguments that show that working in both industries would be good for the THC companies.

No Significant Learning Curve

THC companies already have massive experience in sourcing the best marijuana raw material and processing it into products that are ready for the market. That same experience would come in handy when they open CBD segments within their businesses because the same methods that they use to source THC plants would be the same methods that they transfer to sourcing CBD plants.

In short, the benefits of branching out into the CBD industry would come without a major cost in terms of learning new systems.

You Address Both Sides of the Market

Some potential customers live in jurisdictions where marijuana isn’t legal either for recreational or medical use. Furthermore, some aren’t interested in THC but want to enjoy the benefits that other marijuana compounds offer.

A THC business which doesn’t have a CBD wing loses out on the two categories of customers described above. However, the THC businesses which start CBD sections have a foothold in both THC and CBD markets. This positions them to gain more since they have a bigger pool of clients to service.

It Pegs Back the Stigma

There is still a section of the population that thinks that marijuana is only for stoners. This stigma has done a lot to prevent the marijuana industry from reaching its full potential, although steps are being taken to maintain the trajectory of growth despite such attitudinal challenges.

By starting a CBD product line, THC companies hit two birds with one stone. First, they expand their pool of clients as explained earlier, and they also provide proof that marijuana has far more uses outside giving recreational users a high.  As the population starts enjoying the other benefits of the cannabis plant, such as improving their overall wellbeing, the stigma directed at cannabis will drop by the wayside and the industry will blossom.

Industry analysts are of the view that the arguments above could have been at the back of the minds of the people at companies with interests in the CBD industry like The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) as they assessed the potential of the CBD segment.

US Navy Warns Sailors About Hemp and CBD Products

August 9, 2019 08:05:18

As the CBD wave sweeps across the U.S. after the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, the U.S. Navy has come out and warned its personnel to refrain from knowingly using any product made from hemp or CBD as this could jeopardize their standing in this branch of the armed forces.

A press release issued by the Secretary of the Navy says that currently, there are no federal regulations for the CBD and hemp industries. This means that there is no way for navy personnel to be sure about the THC content of a product that they buy even if the label states the ingredients in that product.

Consequently, a sailor who uses those untested products could test positive for marijuana metabolites when a urinalysis is done, and it would be hard to prove that the affected person didn’t willingly consume marijuana.

A positive test, warns the Navy Secretary, carries the risk of being dishonorably discharged from the navy, and that would impact any benefits that one would be eligible for.

The press release also warns sailors to be careful before they believe the therapeutic claims made by some manufacturers of hemp products until the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completes studying them and makes a decision about their truthfulness.

Sailors don’t only have to stay clear of hemp and CBD products, but also the stocks of companies making those products, according to the Department of Defense (DoD).

Since marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, members of the armed forces may just have to watch as other people buy stocks in the marijuana companies which are listed on several exchanges.

The position of the DoD is that any member of the armed forces who buys these shares commits a “reportable incident” because holding those shares is considered as participating in drug-related activities. Such activity has the potential to cost contractors, civilians and service members their security clearance issued by the DoD.

The question is, how will the Department of Defense monitor all the mutual funds that service personnel invest in, and how will they prove that personnel knowingly put their money (through a mutual fund) in a marijuana company? The sheer amount of work needed to monitor where all service men and women, as well as all the other people who work for the DoD in some capacity invest their money makes this task nearly impossible to pull off.

The department of defense may therefore restrict itself to taking administrative action against personnel who directly invest in marijuana companies since this is easier to track.

For now, industry analysts believe that CBD industry players like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) will be hoping that the Navy softens its stance on CBD products once the FDA releases its regulations for the industry.

One in Seven Americans Uses CBD Products, Gallup Poll Finds

August 8, 2019 15:00:12

A recent poll conducted by Gallup between June 19 and July 12 has found that 14 percent of all Americans say that they use products containing cannabidiol (CBD). The poll reveals some noteworthy trends in the way CBD is taking the country by storm after the legalization of hemp towards the end of 2018.

Overall, younger people seem to be more exposed to, and are actually using CBD products when compared to older Americans. For example, two out of ten adults who are below 30 years report using CBD products while a paltry 8 percent of seniors aged 65 or more say they use CBD products. This trend of younger people being more willing to use CBD is similar to what Gallup polls report about cannabis use.

In terms of geography, the western side of the U.S. has more people (21 percent) using CBD products when compared to other regions of the country (11 percent in the East and Midwest, and 13 percent in the South).

One possible reason to explain why more people in the West are using CBD products is that medical and recreational marijuana has been legal in that part of the country for more years than the other regions, so people in the West have had more exposure to CBD products.

The poll also found that 35 percent of all Americans aren’t familiar with CBD and the products made from this cannabinoid while 50 percent said that they are aware of CBD but don’t use its products. This means that companies looking to get a foothold in the market have to find ways of reaching the 35 percent who don’t know CBD and convince them to start using these products.

Gallup also used the poll as an opportunity to find out why those who use CBD products opt for them. A sizeable number (40 percent) said that they use CBD products for pain relief, two in ten said they use these products for anxiety, 11 percent said they use CBD products to get better sleep and eight out of a hundred users said they use CBD products to ease arthritis symptoms. Those were the main four reasons people gave for using CBD products.

It was also found that more women (25 percent) than men (14 percent) use CBD products for pain relief, while more men (15 percent) than women (8 percent) use CBD for insomnia.

Going down the list of the top reasons why Americans use CBD products shows that people are looking to benefit from the therapeutic effects of this compound. This is food for thought for the FDA which is working to develop regulations for the industry.

Analysts are convinced that CBD industry players like Organigram Holdings Inc. (TSX.V: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI) and Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQB: PLPRF) will take careful note of these findings are plan accordingly.

Why CBD May Remain Highly Priced for Longer

August 8, 2019 08:00:16

If you have decided to try using a CBD product, such as CBD tinctures or oils, you may have noticed that the items are a bit on the pricey end, and this is cause for concern since many people who would benefit from the therapeutic effects of this compound are on the lower side of the purchasing power continuum. But why are these products expensive?

Costly Extraction Methods

In the U.S., industrial hemp was legalized across the country at the end of last year, so the supply end of the raw material from which CBD is extracted is still on the lower side. As you may know, when supply is low and demand is high, prices go up. It shouldn’t therefore surprise you that high-quality hemp from which CBD is extracted can sell for upwards of $200 a pound.

The method that a processor uses to extract the CBD also adds to the cost of getting the final product to you. The CBD products which aren’t so expensive are usually extracted using a lot of solvents, and those chemicals reduce the effectiveness of the resultant products.

The processors who sell CBD products of the highest quality use costly methods, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction, which maintains the purity of the CBD extracted. These non-chemical extraction methods are very costly, and this could explain why estimates put the price of an ounce of pure CBD at nearly $3,000. For comparison, an ounce of gold costs half of that!

In short, until the farm gate price of industrial hemp goes down and more efficient and less costly extraction methods are invented, CBD products are likely to remain highly priced (at least the quality ones).

The Uncertain Regulatory Climate

Regulators, such as the FDA, are scrambling to play catchup with the CBD industry. So far, the FDA has written that it is illegal to infuse food items with CBD, and sellers of wellness products containing CBD have been warned not to make unsubstantiated therapeutic claims on product packaging.

The USDA and the FDA are working to release draft rules which will regulate the hemp-CBD industry, and until that happens, producers are operating in a legal grey area.

Such a regulatory environment isn’t good for investment, so this is holding back how deeply involved entrepreneurs and innovators can get until the cloud lifts.

Consequently, companies will remain hesitant to put a lot of money into developing better ways to bring CBD products to market at an affordable price for the average Joe.

This is a pity, because industry analysts believe that entities like Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) and Nabis Holdings (CSE: NAB) (OTC: NABIF) (FRA: 71P) would like to put in place systems that would make CBD products affordable for everyone who needs them.

Massachusetts Businesses Frustrated by Ambiguous CBD Guidelines

August 7, 2019 15:00:10

Many farmers and business owners in Massachusetts say that the recent policy statement issued about hemp and its derivatives is very bad for business. Under that policy, some hemp products, such as food infused with CBD, are banned.

This policy, which was announced in June, casts a shadow on the farmers and the local businesses that were hoping to get a slice of the money available in the booming hemp-CBD industry.

Farmers are concerned that they may be unable to recoup what they have invested in growing their hemp crop if the state clamps down on the largest market that would have created demand for their produce.

Businesses were also alarmed by the letters which were sent to them by the Northampton Department of Public Health. In those letters, the business owners were advised to voluntarily pull down a variety of CBD products on their shelves before the state regulators act against them.

The businesses have reacted differently to these letters. For example, some have vowed to take a stand against this directive and will continue to sell the banned products until the state clearly explains why those particular products cannot be sold.

Others have opted to obey the directive and many shops can be seen with signs indicating that if a customer buys one product, he or she will be given another one at no cost. Such businesses are trying to recoup a fraction of what they invested in their stock before those products are seized by the state.

The confusion gets worse when you look at what is happening at the local authority level. Some jurisdictions have decided to give businesses up to next year to sell off their current stock and then stop carrying CBD-infused food. Others have given local businesses three months to clear their stock while others haven’t taken any enforcement action against the banned products.

These differences in the way the law is being enforced across the state have made life very difficult for businesses and farmers to predict what will come next.

This uncertainty is made worse by the fact that the FDA hasn’t yet released its CBD rules, and many states, including Massachusetts, are waiting on the federal agency to show its hand before they enact their own regulations.

For Massachusetts farmers and businesses, salvation may lie in the hands of the state legislature where a bill was introduced to regulate hemp products like CBD-infused food items.

Analysts are convinced that CBD industry actors like IONIC Brands Corp. (CSE: IONC) (OTC: IONKF) and Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) may be impatient to see the FDA rules since this would give the U.S. CBD industry a clear direction of what the future holds, from a regulatory perspective.

Aurora Cannabis Teams Up With UFC to Study CBD Use for Pain Management in MMA Athletes

August 7, 2019 08:00:18

Aurora Cannabis, a cannabis company based in Edmonton, is teaming up with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to conduct research into how CBD can be used for pain management among mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes.

This partnership is expected to result in several studies that will investigate the role of CBD in managing inflammation, pain, wound healing as well as recovery from intense training.

The research is intended to understand the specific health and recovery needs of the elite athletes who take part in the highly competitive mixed martial arts. The information gathered during the studies will be the basis upon which specially formulated products will be developed for use by MMA athletes to deal with the different health-related challenges that they face.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship revealed that under WADA and USADA regulations, cannabidiol (CBD) is allowed. However, the UFC intends to go a step further and take part in this research so that it can lead the way in educating MMA athletes about the best way in which they can use CBD.

The actual clinical study will be carried out in Las Vegas at the UFC Performance Institute. Dr. Jason Dyck, who heads the Global Scientific Oversight Committee of Aurora Cannabis, will lead the team conducting the research. The research team will also have performance experts taken from the UFC Performance Institute.

Speaking at the unveiling of the partnership, Terry Booth (Aurora Cannabis CEO) said that the company is using this research and the science-based products that they will develop as an entry point to get into the U.S. CBD market.

Kyle Murray, the vice dean at the Alberta School of Business (Alberta University) remarked that he was initially surprised to hear about this partnership, but soon realized that mixed martial arts athletes make a good population to study since their sport is so competitive and physically demanding.

The UFC will ask athletes to enroll for this study voluntarily so that the scientists can establish whether CBD can enhance performance or lower it, whether the compound is good for the athletes or not, what modes of administration give the best outcomes, if any, and any drawbacks to using CBD products, especially topicals.

Such collaborations are a direct result of the legalization of industrial hemp and its derivatives in the U.S. when the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law by President Donald Trump in December last year.

Industry pundits think CBD industry players like Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) and Hemptown USA will be pleased that such research partnerships are being formed. The products made after such research will help to make the industry more reputable, and that is good for everyone involved.

4 Tips for CBD Producers Wishing to Break into the Spa Market

August 6, 2019 15:00:39

Spas in the U.S. alone are estimated to be worth $18 billion annually, and manufacturers of CBD topicals who wish to break into this market face stiff competition since every manufacturer is looking at this market of wealthy patrons. The following strategies can help a producer’s products to stand out from all others competing for the same clients.

Ditch Handing Out Samples

It is the norm for manufacturers of products, including CBD topical products, to make tiny samples that are handed out to potential clients in order to give them a firsthand experience of the product. However, a spa director is likely to throw your samples in the trash because the quantity is so small that it cannot be tested on several spa clients in order to ascertain how good that product is.

To stand out, give out full-sized products so that the spa director tries out your product on his or her clients. That trial may just provide the break you need!

Don’t Dwell So Much on the Origin

It is true that where the hemp you use for your products was grown is important, but this detail doesn’t carry as much weight to a spa director who is primarily interested in how well a given product can help the clients who walk through the doors of the spa.

Instead, stand out by pointing out other critical factors, such as how the industrial hemp used was grown (is it organic or not? were sustainable methods used?). Such information will help a spa owner or director to decide how that product fits into the culture and ideals of the establishment.

Provide Training

Another way to win over spa directors as you introduce your products to them is by providing education to the staff and clients as well. Each CBD topical product may have a unique way in which it should be used in order to get the full benefits of that product, so providing this education as well as demonstrations on actual spa clients can increase the likelihood of your product being carried by a spa chain.

Be Careful About Non-CBD Ingredients

Spa owners want to be certain that the CBD topical products are responsible for the effects that you say that they can have. If your products have other ingredients that aren’t related to CBD, the spa director will have no way of ascertaining that the effects observed in clients can be attributed to the CBD formulation or to the other ingredients in that product.

You can therefore rise above your competition by keeping your CBD topical product free from other ingredients that do not come from the industrial hemp plant.

Industry analysts couldn’t immediately establish to what extent CBD industry players like Golden Developing Solutions Inc. (OTC: DVLP) and Grapefruit Boulevard Investments Inc. (OTCQB: IGNG) tweak these strategies in order to make their products standout in the market.

It’s Official, Online Searches for CBD Exceed Those About Beyonce and Kim Kardashian

August 6, 2019 08:00:59

According to an analysis of online search data, CBD is now more popular than Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, at least in terms of the number of searches done on these topics. A Knowledge Navigator (a backend data analysis tool) was used to map consumer trends, and it showed that interest in CBD had been rising exponentially for years.

The data used during this analysis was pulled from several online sources, including 12,000 URLs and social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.

The graphs plotted by the Navigator show that CBD started seeing s significant rise in the number of online searches in 2017. Since then, its graph has been rising steadily without any sign of it peaking any time soon. As of this year, the graph for CBD had risen to surpass the number of searches done on popular topics, such as Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, veganism and kale.

These findings are plausible because a similar analysis done by Google also shows that there has been an uptick in the number of times that the search query “CBD” is entered into the search engine.

The timing of the surge in online searches in 2018 also perfectly makes sense when you consider the regulatory events during that time. 2018 saw the Farm Act of 2018 debated and passed by Congress before President Trump signed it into law towards the end of December. In that law, hemp and products from it, such as CBD, were federally legalized.

A large number of companies has joined the fray to sell CBD-infused health and wellness products, including products for which anecdotal and scientific evidence exists regarding their therapeutic benefit for people suffering from anxiety, seizures and a host of other conditions.

However, the current lack of regulations for the industry has raised concerns among members of the public that buyers may be sold products having untested ingredients whose labels make unsubstantiated claims to lure buyers.

For now, there is no dispute that online interest in CBD has hit an all-time high and is still going higher as the CBD industry takes off. If the estimates that the CBD industry in the U.S. alone will be worth approximately $20 billion by 2024 are anything to go by, the public fascination with this cannabinoid is likely to soar even higher.

Analysts believe that this bullish trend in consumer interest is likely to spur industry players like Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) and Geyser Brands Inc. Canadian Cannabis Company Cronos Enters US CBD Market by Buying Lord Jones

August 5, 2019 15:00:30

Cronos, a Canadian marijuana company, announced on Friday that it was buying access to the U.S. CBD market by acquiring Redwood Holding Group for $300 million. Redwood Holding Group is the company behind one of the most popular CBD beauty products brand Lord Jones.

The Lord Jones brand sells CBD-infused lotions, bath oils and salts, as well as gummies. This brand was the first CBD-products line to secure a spot on the shelves of the beauty retailer Sephora.

This acquisition gives Cronos a foothold in the CBD market which is growing rapidly throughout the U.S. This growth literally exploded last year when Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill in which hemp and its products became legal across the U.S. After the announcement of the deal, the shares of Cronos closed the trading week on a 9 percent gain.

Robert Rosenheck and his wife Cindy Capobianco founded Lord Jones back in 2015. Once this acquisition by Cronos is completed, the duo will join Cronos during the third quarter of this year when the deal is expected to be finalized.

Mike Gorenstein, the CEO of Cronos Group, said in a press statement that his company would do everything possible to preserve the integrity that Rosenheck and his wife Capobianco had worked so hard to create for their brand. He added that Cronos would learn from Lord Jones while also using its resources to leverage a stronger position in the CBD market.

Of the $300 million sum agreed as the cost of the acquisition, $225 million will be paid to the sellers of Redwood Holding Group in cash. The balance of that sum will be in the form of newly issued shares in Cronos Group.

It should be remembered that Cronos Group accepted $1.8 billion from tobacco giant Altria towards the end of last year. That deal gave the tobacco company a 45 percent ownership stake in the pot company.

It is widely believed that the tobacco company wanted to shore up its market position by diversifying into the cannabis space given the dwindling sales of tobacco products. In turn, Cronos would benefit from the extensive experience that Altria has in distributing its products and navigating the often turbulent regulatory waters in the U.S and around the world where the company has subsidiaries.

Industry analysts believe that other CBD industry players, such as Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) will feel challenged by the deal pulled off by Cronos Group and will also look for ways to make significant inroads into the lucrative U.S. CBD market.
